George Pugh is more than qualified to lead the North Carolina A&T football team. He has been successful at every stop he has made. He won as a player (University of Alabama) and as a coach in several major bowl games. Check his bio.

Veteran coach George Pugh serves as assistant head coach for recruiting and special projects on Georgia State's first football staff. He also coaches the wide receivers. In addition to more than 25 years in college coaching, Pugh has strong ties to the Atlanta area after serving as the head coach at Columbia High School (1978) and Meadowcreek High School (2003-04). As a college coach, he has recruited the Atlanta area throughout his career. "George is an outstanding recruiter because he is highly respected by the high school coaches, he has a remarkable personality and he shows an uncanny knack of knowing where the players are," said Georgia State head coach Bill Curry upon hiring Pugh in July 2008. "He knows how to find, sign and develop talent, especially if they are wide receivers." Pugh also has head coaching experience, directing the Alabama A&M program from 1989-91. In his three seasons, the Bulldogs posted a 19-10 record, winning three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and reaching the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1991. In 2007, Pugh served as receivers coach at the University of Houston, helping the Cougars reach the Texas Bowl and coaching Donnie Avery, who was selected in the second round (33rd overall pick) of the 2008 National Football League draft by the St. Louis Rams. Prior to that, Pugh served two seasons (2005-06) at UAB. That was his second tour of duty with the Blazers, where he also worked from 1995-2000, both times working under head coach Watson Brown. In his first UAB stint, Pugh helped the Blazers in their transition to NCAA Division I-A. He worked as an assistant coach at Arkansas in 2001-02. Pugh began his coaching career in 1976 as an assistant coach at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga., where he served one season as an assistant coach and one year as head coach. He then moved to the college ranks, serving as receivers coach at UT-Chattanooga (1978-79) and then New Mexico (1980). He then spent one season at Pittsburgh, helping the Panthers reach the 1982 Sugar Bowl, before a seven-year stint at Texas A&M (1982-88). The Aggies won three Southwest Conference titles and played in three Cotton Bowls during his time there. Pugh also coached high school football in Alabama at Selma High School (1992-93) and Luverne High School (1994). A four-year letterwinner as a tight end, Pugh played at Alabama under head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. During his four years (1972-75), the Crimson Tide lost just one game, highlighted by a national championship in 1973. He earned his bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation from Alabama in 1976. Pugh is married to the former Lelettrice Hines. The couple has three daughters, Stephanie, April and Brittany, and three sons, Marcus, Michael George and Joshua. www.georgiastatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=12700&ATCLID=1515563

why would a&t take a "risk" on a non-proven long term commodity? other than maybe maynor, whoever we hire needs to have a long term proven track record as a head coach. our program is too "fragile" to be taking risks on non-proven long term coaches. if we don't get it right this time, our program will suffer "big time" for many more years to come...

This guy is the most qualified coach in America for this job. He assisted Georgia State in defeating NCCSU in the Georgia Dome. Pugh is in line to become the next HC at Georgia State University. You guys will be lucky to get a proven coach like George. George knows how to build a PROGRAM not just win games. Programs that George Pugh have been affiliated with are better because of his uncanning ability to recruit and develop talent. Look at some of the players he has recruited and coached. Recuited the highest paid offensive linemen-Jason Peters and wide receiver Roddy White. He turned Donnie Avery (University of Houston) into a NFL prospect He is almost responsible for building UAB into a conference contender and has taken off with Georgia State. The North Carolina A&T administration should be in Atlanta ASAP trying to convince this guy to take the job.

Your obviously affiliated with the guy in some way, otherwise your first post on this board wouldn't be about him. So I ask again, did he actually apply?

i have no idea what our admins have established as criteria for selecting our next head coach. but i sure as hail hope somewhere in their job description is a phrase similar to the following, "must have proven track record as a head coach". we can't be "risk takers" at this juncture in our program. we need the closest commodity to a "sure bet" as we can find. our time has come and gone for taking risks. we need a sure thing...

Why would Pugh come to A&T if he is next in-line for the GA State head coaching job in the best conference in FCS with a lot of resources? There is also a big hole in his resume. What happened between 1991 and 1992? Why did he leave as winning Div II program and end up coaching high school.

By the way, I read the bios of GA State's offensive and defensive coordinators. Both coordinators have impressive resumes as being coordinators in Div IA/BCS...... and they are white. No way is Pugh the "headcoach in-waiting" over those two coordinators.

Methinks Pugh would be better suited for Savannah State. He can bring some recruits there and do some serious damage.

Call Bill Curry...he will be honest with you. Again, why would he leave then? For a place that hasn't had a stable coach in over 8 years. Does he like being punished for no reason? Doesn't make sense. You still aint told us if he applied or not. As impressive as you seem to think his resume is(and that can be argued) it aint worthy of chasing him down.
