So reading up on all things Aggie Related and being the wikipedia nerd that I am (as I tend to do with a good chunk of my free time #DontJudgeMe) Ive noticed that when it comes to Rivals in sports everything seems to center around those pigeons from fayetteville st. So i wanted to ask more seasoned and Aggie fans: "Who are our Major Sports Rivals?"
Football
NCCU WSSU Howard (?) SCSU (?)
Basketball
NCCU WSSU Howard
SN: forgive me, I think this topic has been discussed once before, but I could not find it via the search feature

I would have to say WSSU would be A&T's main Rival in both Basketball and Football back in the old CIAA and with in the MEAC . NCCU became the main Rival when we stopped playing WSSU . But WSSU became a member of the MEAC the Rivalry was born again but now WSSU is back in the CIAA and we don't play them anymore. NCCU would be the main Rival in the MEAC right now. I feel that WSSU will always be A&T's main Rival weather we play them are not. We need to get the game back it's a money maker!!!

It would depend on when you went to A&T. I can tell saabman is older because any Aggie that went in the late 80s or after would say NCCU hands down. When I got there in 93 we played WSSU but it didn't even come close to the rival with the Dirty Burgundy.

Well, back in the day ('50's), NCCU and A&T was the ticket. Both of these schools were the biggest and baddest in NC and the CIAA. They were hated rivals in every kinda way. Their football games against each other were epic, knock down, battles. The game was always played in Nov. and was the last game of the year (they called it da "Turkey Classic").
WSSU (TC for Teachers College) was the red-headed step child in the mix back then. WSSU (TC) was a much smaller school that was known as a school that produced black teachers and some pretty co-eds because the ratio was probably 3 to 4 women to errrrrr man. In the '50's basketball and footbal for TC was horrible. During this period legendary Hall of Fame coach Clarence "Big House" Gaines coached the football and basketball teams. TC fortunes turned to da good when Gaines recruited NBA Hall of Famer Earl ("da Pearl, Black Jesus, Black Magic"). From that point TC came in da mix with BASKETBALL but football did not come into REAL play until they hired "Wild Bill" Hayes.
Now, around the time "Pearl" showed on da set at TC, Norfork State entered da CIAA w/ a BURNER in basketball but did not have a football team. Norfolk State's basketball team had "Pee Wee" Kirkland (he was featured in the sequil "Blue Magic"...he got drafted by the NBA and the DEA... for selling drugs), ex-NBA great Bobby Dandridge, "Hook Shot" Grant, "Pop" Pitts, etc.
So, what we had at this point (late "60's and thru da '70's) is : basketball...A&T vs. TC (WSSU), NCCU, and Norfolk St. it was on and popping. ALL of these games were packed to da gill and you better keep your eyes open and ur fight game sharp because these were BITTER rivalry games.
Later in da '90's Howard had some good basketball teams and they always tried to knock us off. You gotta remember we WERE known as a BASKETBALL FACTORY so we had some smokers thru da years. Also, SCSU came into da mix in football when they joined da MEAC.
So, the school that has remained constant from ALL DA WAY back is dem dirty, stanking, birds in Durham, NC.

I still have to go with WSSU/TC because my mom went their and my dad A&T. I don't know if any of you remember this but TC/WSSU was the only school that A&T (banned) it's students from going on their campus and TC/WSSU from coming on to A&T's campus because of the fights and the death of and AGGIE student after a game. Now name any other school in the CIAA or MEAC that we have Banned other then WSSU.

Not to argue da point but the intensity by playing TC didn't come into play until after it had been established with NCCU. TC was so small and underfunded all the way back that until "Big House" Gaines came from Morgan State to coach football and basketball, sports was not major. "Big House dd not turn TC into a MAJOR playa in the rivalry until he got Earl "da Pearl" Monroe. Even after this, football was not even competitive because we use to beat them 50-6, 60-0, (approximation we use to kill them in football).
Definitely, there was a BIG rivalry in basketball. Hail, when Groove Phi Groove tried to go on line at TC da Aggie Grooves went over to TC on campus and kicked their azzzzzzzes so hard they didn't know weather to sh*t or go blind!!!!

BasketballNCCU WSSU Howard SN: forgive me, I think this topic has been discussed once before, but I could not find it via the search feature blues, i think you've got it right. to me, we have two virtually equal intense rivalries with nccu and wssu. if someone were to ask who is a&t's top rival, i don't think you could mention nccu without also mentioning wssu. however, i'd give the "slight" edge to nccu for the following reasons; 1. nccu has a larger fan base than wssu. 2. most aggies hate to lose "any" sport to nccu, but we don't care as much when we play wssu in sports other than football and basketball. 3. because of past altercations with nccu, the nccu rivalry takes on a different meaning than the wssu rivalry. i hate losing to either one of them, but if i had to lose to one of them, i'd rather lose to wssu than nccu. i also think you've got scsu and howard correct also. obviously neither of them are as intense as nccu or wssu. scsu's rivalry is more so in football than basketball. and howard's rivalry is both football and basketball. but unlike nccu and wssu, our record and the records of the howard and scsu teams matter in those rivalries. whereas nobody's record matters in the nccu and wssu rivalries...

Back in the '60s and '70s, how did FAMU & Tenn. State figure in the mix?

As far as the topic goes, I'll say the rilvaries are:
Football NCCU WSSU SCSU Howard
Basketball NCCU WSSU Howard
Interestingly enough...I think our sports teams especially those mentioned above need to understand our rivals as well. I know when we play NCCU and WSSU in football, they want to beat us in everything from the football team, band, cheerleaders and all the way to the dayum mascots. Our teams seem to go about the game as a normal game. I don't even think we view SCSU as a rival but, they sure do love to beat the hell out of us.

econgrad71.......all da way bac n da day----we played FAMU a lot in football when Jake Gaither was da football coach and they were MONSTERS. A&T was more known and WAS a basketball powerhouse. We had a hard time with them in football but they didn't even play us in basketball (we wuda smoked them). I wud say FAMU, Tenn St., and Grambling were da schools more known for football. We did not play Tenn St. that often but they were real good back then.

My understanding before me and during my time in school, Central is our #1 rival in all things. It diminished a little while they were in the CIAA, but watch it grow to the previous level. Winston was a significant rival in Basketball almost from the beginning. WSSU probably has the head-to-head edge over us in basketball. Those were some real battles back in the day in packed gyms, not only because of the coaches, but a lot of the players were rivals growing up in Philly, NYC, and other points North. The WSSU football rivalry didn’t come about until the arrival of Bill Hayes.
Over time there have been rivals for certain decades like Howard in basketball for the 70s and 80s. You talk to people before me they hate Morgan almost as much as Central because of football in the 40s, 50s, 60s. SCSU from my POV is manufactured rivalry. I personally don’t have a higher level of interest of beating them than Del State. There is a long history with FAMU, not a real rivalry, but thanks to Bill Hayes (and Mo Hicks) we can at least talk trash to them on a certain level.
I don’t think you need but one rival, and for me that’s NCCU and for them it appears to be NCA&T. Now if we can only develop a greater mutual financial benefit to this rivalry.

I think you made the best point Aggie77. For it to be a rival the "hate" has to be in every sport and equal in BOTH directions. NCCU hates us as much as we hate them. There may be other rivals for some people because of family ties and all that, but overall it's them damn Dirty Burgundy Birds.

When I was there (mid to late 80's) Football was Howard & WSSU and Basketball was Howard and WSSU. Then 89 and after Football started the Aggie/eagle Classic and made them a rival again.
