A&T's basketball teams Friday, October 16, 2009 By Jeff Mills Staff Writer GREENSBORO -- If you were at the Corbett Center late Thursday night, and you didn't have fun at N.C. A&T's first Midnight Madness basketball event, this much is certain: You weren't paying attention. College basketball practices can't officially start until 12:01 a.m. Saturday, but a late-arriving crowd helped the A&T men's and women's teams get a head start on the rest of the country with a party for the Aggies players. They didn't disappoint. Senior Tweet Cook and freshman Amber Calvin shot 3-pointers like free throws for the women's team. Sophomore guard Nic Simpson narrowly edged Cook in the men-versus-women shooting contest, and 6-foot-5 freshman Lawrence Smith won the dunk contest. "We're just here to get interest stirred up," A&T athletics director Wheeler Brown said. "We would've had it tomorrow like everybody else, but that's the start of our fall break and the students are heading out of here. We wanted them here."... Entire Article

I couldn't stay long, but that event last night seemed really well-organized. I was surprised to find that they even had the concession stand open.
I got a hot dog, soda, popcorn, and 4 blow pops for just $7 bucks. That would have probably cost me about $20 at the movies.

I see the freshman from Bishop McNamara was the best dunker. Did anybody here see the dunk contest? How did it go down?

I left right after the dance contest. But I did see the girl who transferred from Oregon State warming up. She will be eligible to play next year.
She is definitely a big body in the low post and she was also nailing down 3 pointers like it was nothing. That girl is gonna be a dominant player for us in 2010-11.

I don't remember reading about a transfer from OSU. Is this her? www.osubeavers.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/mitchell_alex00.htmlI just saw a blurb about her transferring to “North Carolina Central.” Maybe they don’t know the difference in Oregon. Anyway if this is her, it’s a major addition for the program.

This was my first time seeing her, so I'm not sure if that's the same face. But the Oregon State transfer is about 6-4 ... and she had the softest touch of any female post player I have ever seen.
She looked like Steve Rush from behind the 3-point line last night.

Ok, Alex Mitchell is the one. brookshatch.mvourtown.com/2009/08/"Ex-Oregon State women’s basketball player Alex Mitchell has transferred to North Carolina A&T, a MEAC school in Greensboro. She must sit out a year under NCAA rules and will have two seasons of eligibility remainig, starting in 2010-11."

Wow
hats off to Coach Bibbs. This young lady was one of the Top 100 playes in high school and a legit center at 6'4. That gives us height that we have never had. We will be very good this year. But it would not surprise me to see us crack the TOP 25 poll next year.
we all know Coach is not done yet!!!!

That incoming freshman Gorham stands 6-2 and is supposed be a real bruiser in the paint. Next year, we are going to be hard to stop under the basket.

man, i luv coach bibbs! talk about a coach with some swagger! i mean, she put it out there for everybody to see! she's not concerned at all about giving the meac bulletin board material. and i'm cool with that because she can back it up! i luv this quote by coach bibbs;
"If this group of ladies handle their business," Cage-Bibbs said, "they will be No. 1 again."
i mean, how often does a coach predict that his/her team will win the conference championship before the season even starts? i luv it! to me, that means coach bibbs is not worried about the #1 question regarding her team going into the season. and the #1 question is, can this year's team compensate for the lost of amber bland and brittany taylor-james? i guess bibbs answered that question loud and clear!
if wheels is smart, he'd have discussions with bibbs to find out what it'll take to keep her in aggieland until she permanently retires from coaching. and if its not unreasonable, he should make long range plans to ensure that she never coaches at any other hbcu. now, if she gets a big time offer from a pwc, ain't too much we can do about that. but if she doesn't, we need to make sure aggieland is her "permanent" home.
whenever we get a coach like hayes, corbett, or bibbs, we need to do whatever is within reason to permanently keep them...

I don't think the men practiced last night. At least, they were not supposed to according to the press release.

Oldschool,
Sounds like your boy from MD - Lawrence Smith won the dunk contest. I remember you saying that we should not sleep on this young man. I know this does not indicate how he will play in a game but its a good start / confidence builder for a freshman!
