With the team we have coming back next year, depth will actually be one of our strengths. It really all depends on how much our post players improve in the off season. If Shantar Waddell, Nakia DeBlanc, and dare I say Brittanie Neeley can really dedicate themselves to working on their low post game, we will have a roster next season than can compete game in and game out with most top 30 teams in a the nation. i think deblanc really has an upside. she has the "potential" to really develop into a standout post player in the meac. i think we'll see a much improved and a much more confident deblanc next year. she's only 6'2" but she's long and has a really good wing span. if she develops to become an all meac caliber player next year, we could have another special season. waddell, imo, is a very good role player. she's the kind of player every coach likes to have. i don't see her being dominant in the paint but she'll be an extremely good support player down low. rebounding, shot blocking, transition, and defending are her strong suits. she's not a great scorer but she doesn't need to be. she definitely brings value to the team. neeley is a little to soft for my liking. she seems to be a sweet kid but she just doesn't seem to have the temperament to mix it up in the middle. unless she substantially matures over the summer, i don't see her playing a major role next year. she'll probably get limited minutes...

Brittanie Neeley will have to come to a serious personal crossroad this offseason.
Either she makes a commitment to work hard this summer and become a capable post player ... or she should consider moving to Milan and become a fashion model. The girl has a definite future on the runway, the question is does she have a future inside the paint and under the glass.

The ages old problem in putting an hbcu basketball team on the floor against a major has always been quality depth. That comes heavily into play when you run the floor like we do. Yeah, they tend to wear down a bit down the stretch in the second half of some games. DeBlanc, Neeley and Waddell will need to work on their game during the off season, if A&T is to be successful. Waddell shooting. Neeley foot work, speed/quickness and strength. DeBlanc foot work, strength and speed/quickness. Depth also hurt Corbett. He was usually strong with 7 players, but it usually caught up with him in games against the bigs down the stretch (fouls and out of gas). Even his smelling salts failed him by then. Remember him yelling "suck it up" and he or Mr. B pulling out the smelling salts small vials.

In my uneducated opinion, our starting five could probably go with most teams outside the top 10. It's just that their bench could also go with our starting five, and our bench could go with me, thrilla, Wheels, Robert Van Winkle, and Miley Cyrus.
That's the one area where running and pressing can really hurt us.

South Cumberland athletes make all-conference squads
By Chris Koonce Correspondent ADVERTISEMENT A dozen local athletes were recently selected for all-conference basketball squads. Girls’ basketball South View guard Amber Calvin was selected as the girls’ Player of the Year in the Two Rivers Conference. Calvin made 61 3-point shots and averaged 18.1 points per game. The senior dished out 6.9 assists per contest and sank 86 percent of her free-throw attempts. Calvin finished with 544 points for the season and 1,561 for her career to move into second place on the school’s career scoring list. She was joined on the all-conference team by seniors Jazmine Cooper and Brittany Wade. Cooper averaged 16.9 points per contest and led the Tigers with 9.7 rebounds per game. Cooper scored 508 points during the season to become the third player in school history to score more than 500 points in a year. Wade sank 15 3-point shots and averaged 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Jack Britt senior Brianna McIntyre and junior Caitlin Sandy were picked for the Mid-Southeastern All-Conference Girls’ basketball team. South View girls help N.C. team to victory
FYI MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — South View’s Amber Calvin and Jazmine Cooper were among six North Carolina All-Stars scoring in double figures as they beat the South Carolina All-Stars 111-77 Saturday at Socastee High School.
The 111 points were a new single-game record for the all-star game between the top female senior basketball players from the two states. The old record was 106.
North Carolina put the game away early, leading 65-50 at the end of the first half. Calvin played 20 minutes and scored 11 points while Cooper played 21 minutes and scored 15.
Calvin also had four assists and four rebounds while Cooper had 11 rebounds, second most for the North Carolina team.
The North Carolina squad was coached by Tony Denning, head coach at Douglas Byrd High School.
Calvin said the North Carolina team came together quickly under Denning’s guidance after only practicing Thursday and Friday.
“We had about four practices,’’ Calvin said. “We didn’t have any problems. The game plan was to run up and down the court, that’s it.”
Cooper said North Carolina played like it had been on the court together for some time. She said some of the players had played with each other before, and that helped.
Both Calvin and Cooper are headed to college next year. Calvin signed early with North Carolina A&T, one of the few schools that continued to recruit her after she missed all of the 2008 season with a knee injury.
Cooper just announced she will be attending Campbell University next year.
“I know it’s going to be hard,’’ she said. “I’m ready to play for a Division I team.’’
Calvin and Cooper led South View to this year’s 4-A Eastern Regional tournament in Greenville, where they saw their bid for a second state 4-A championship in three years end when they fell to Durham Hillside in the regional semifinals.
Cooper said it was good to make up for the regional loss with a win Saturday.
“It would have been good to win state, but we won for our state,’’ she said. “That made up for my senior year.’’

I think Campbell might be coming to the Dawg Pound next season, since we went down to Buies Creek this past year.
If so, that will be quite a reunion between Calvin and Cooper.
