Calvin leads South View girls over E.E. Smith
By Earl Vaughan Jr. Scholastic sports editor ADVERTISEMENT Staff photo by Andrew Craft South View’s Tanele Walker, left, tries to shoot past E.E. Smith’s Chelsey Lee during the Tigers’ 63-52 win Tuesday. South View didn’t get the chance to compete in this year’s M.J. Soffe-Intensity Holiday Classic basketball tournament because it was the Tigers’ turn to sit out.
So Tuesday night at Miller Gym they did the next-best thing by beating this year’s champion.
South View flexed inside-outside muscle as guard Amber Calvin scored 23 points and center Jazmine Cooper added 20 to lead the Tigers to a 63-52 win over Holiday Classic champion E.E. Smith.
With the win, South View wrapped up its first tour through the Two Rivers 4-A Conference 6-0 in league play and alone in the first place. The Tigers are 17-1 overall.
Smith, which entered Tuesday’s game a half game back of South View, dropped to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
South View is off Friday while Smith will finish its first-half conference schedule with a key game against Lumberton.
South View sputtered early, couldn’t get a number of easy inside shots to fall, and trailed Smith 13-8 with 2:33 left in the first period.
But a 14-2 run that carried into the second quarter lifted South View to a 22-15 lead. Smith pulled within a point, 24-23, with 4:01 left in the half, but South View pulled to a 39-30 lead at halftime.
“I think we settled down to the pace of the game,’’ Tiger head coach Brent Barker said. “They are going to pressure the ball everywhere. We tried to attack when they were overplaying. I think we were a little bit anxious.’’
Barker said that Calvin, who missed all of last year because of a knee injury, has finally gotten used to playing with her teammates again.
“All the little puzzle pieces are starting to fit together,’’ he said. “She’s much more a continuous part of everything we’re trying to do.’’
Calvin said the hard part was getting to know the team and how they played so they could find the right chemistry again.
Barker was concerned about Smith’s pressure defense after seeing them against Seventy-First. “They were all over the floor trapping and scrambling,’’ he said. “They are still fairly young, but they look experienced.’’
“Smith is a really good team, fast, young and aggressive,’’ Calvin said. “I’m not going to say I was worried. I just knew it was going to be a good game.’’
South View led by 17 at one point in the second half, but Smith rallied to cut the lead to eight twice in the fourth period, but could get no closer.
Barker said his team never felt comfortable. “They can score quickly, especially if we hand it to them, and we did a few times with their pressure. We made some silly mistakes, but we haven’t seen that kind of pressure.’’
The win was South View’s 55th consecutive regular season conference victory.
“That’s kind of crazy,’’ Barker said. “There have been some great teams in this conference. It’s a compliment to the kids that have been through here. We’ve been fortunate to have a talented group of kids for that long.’’
Avae’ Hardy led Smith with 15 points. Tia Moore added 14.
Hardy was pleased her team did try to rally in the fourth quarter. “Things started clicking a little for us,’’ she said. “We’re going to have to match their intensity for an entire game and we’re going to have to rebound. They pounded us inside tonight.’’

She will be all MEAC by her senior year i've never seen her play but she's putting up "superstar" like numbers at the 4A level. she was "all-state" as a sophomore! we're not talking all conference or all district, we're talkin' all state! as a sophomore! sometimes when you land a kid of her caliber, others will follow. nah, she'll be all meac long before her senior year. when a kid puts up the kind of numbers she puts up, she'll be in the running for freshman of the year next year and will probably win it outright. she'll definitely make the all freshman team. she may not be on the first team, but i'm predicting she'll be an all meac player by her sophomore year and every year thereafter...

I have seen several 4A teams in NC and the talent level does not necessarily translate into greatness in the MEAC...hope it does for you Aggies

but the thing that sets her apart is that she's put up big numbers at the state championship level. she won a state 4A championship (only 4AA is considered higher) as a sophomore and put up big numbers in the playoffs. that's what impresses me. its not like she hasn't competed against some of the state's best.
in my eyes, any athlete that is selected "all state" as a sophomore is a stud! most athletes are extremely elated if they are selected all state as a senior. its not often that sophomores are selected all state.
i think bibbs got lucky because the kid had an acl injury and had to sit out her entire junior season. that probably scared away some of the big time schools who didn't want to take a risk. tweet had excellent credentials coming out of high school also but not like calvin. i'm expecting calvin to exceed tweet's performance since she's been at a&t and if i recall correctly, tweet was named meac freshman of the year and i believe she made all meac as a sophomore...
