FYI........................Calvin clutch in Tigers’ late-game rally
By Earl Vaughan Jr. Scholastic sports editor ADVERTISEMENT HOPE MILLS — When things get tight for the South View girls’ basketball team, there’s nothing like having a player who led you to a state championship available to dial up a winning performance.
Enter Amber Calvin, who scored all 16 of her points during a clutch run in the fourth quarter and lifted South View to a 63-53 win over Wilmington New Hanover in the semifinals of 4-A East Sectional 2.
The win sets up a familiar but rare meeting with Westover tonight for the sectional title and the right to advance to the 4-A Eastern Regional in Greenville next week.
South View beat Westover in the sectionals two years ago en route to a perfect record and the state 4-A title.
The teams did not meet in last year’s sectional as Westover won the sectional title and went on to take the state 4-A crown.
Tonight’s game will be at 7 p.m. at the Westover gym.
Thursday’s game was by far the closest of this postseason for South View. The Tigers were behind all of the third quarter and trailed New Hanover 43-38 with 6:58 left in the game.
“I wasn’t worried, really,’’ Calvin said. “We had to get focused more than we were in the first half. They were playing really good defense and it was kind of hard for us to click to attack.’’
Calvin, who has had trouble connecting on her 3-point shooting lately, shifted gears offensively in the game’s final stages. She began taking the ball to the lane, either driving for a basket, getting fouled or dumping off to an open teammate inside.
“I know free throws are almost automatic for me, so that’s why I just drove,’’ she said.
At one point, she made eight consecutive free throws before missing two of her final four. She also penetrated the lane for three fourth-period baskets.
Her final run of free throws gave the Tigers their 10-point winning margin in a game much closer than the final score indicated.
“That’s what you would expect out of somebody that’s been in that situation before,’’ South View coach Brent Barker said. “I was proud of her. I don’t think we forced it to Amber. Within what we were trying to do she was able to make some plays and turn it up for us at the end.’’
Barker said he’s not concerned about Calvin’s 3-point shooting woes. “Over the course of the season, she’s over 50 percent, which is pretty good,’’ he said. “I’ll take that.’’
Strong inside South View continued to get strong play inside from Jazmine Cooper and Brittany Wade. They led the South View scoring with 27 and 17 points respectively.
Calvin doesn’t think this year’s Westover team is as quick as the one South View beat in the sectional finals two years ago.
“I think we can attack them more and get our shot off more,’’ she said. “I think we have a height advantage over them. We’re going to take it inside a lot.’’
Barker said the Wolverines have won a lot of games and have come from behind in others so he’s convinced they know how to win. “Despite them not having a lot of returners, they are a very good team,’’ he said. “We played them several times this summer. Not quite the same setting as a sectional finals. I think the girls won’t have any problem being motivated to go over there and play hard.’’

Yo!!!! She is undicided......someone tell Coach Bibbs to get on this since bibbs recruited calvin, i've got to believe that cooper has not gone unnoticed by bibbs. either bibbs does not desire to recruit her or she already is trying to recruit her. but i doubt seriously that we have to tell bibbs about her...

i guess next year bibbs will move tweet to the 2 where she seemingly is more comfortable. tweet is capable of averaging 18 to 20 points a game and will probably lead the team in scoring next year, but she'll have plenty of help. if deblanc improves and matures over the summer, she'll be a force in the middle next year and i also look for jee sams to have a breakout year next year.
and don't forget about the bowling green transfer that will be eligible. with the complement of players we have, calvin should fit in very nicely. there won't be any pressure on her to carry the load. she'll be able to come in and learn the college game without being expected to lead the team.
you've really got to love the way bibbs has built this team! she has the perfect balance of youth and experience. she'll lose her two leading scorers after this year but she's got plenty of talent on the horizon. next year smalley, tweet, and sams will be the leaders. hopefully deblanc will be ready to start next year so that smalley can move to the power forward position where she belongs.
bibbs will lose tweet and smalley after next season but sams and calvin will be ready to step right in and fill the void. if you look at bibbs' roster, every year that she loses players to graduation she has underclassmen in position to step right in to fill the void. that's what i call tremendous roster building! every year, all bibbs has to do is "reload". and at the rate she's going, she'll never have to "rebuild". that spells trouble for the rest of the meac, for as long as bibbs is in aggieland...

Somehow I think that won't be problem even with them graduating. The names will change but the results will be about the same. Much in the same way Don Corbett's teams did things during the 80's.
New faces and playmakers will always emerge within programs that have great coaching and solid recruiting.

South View girls beat Westover, 52-45
By Randy Capps Staff writer ADVERTISEMENT Staff photo by Octavio Jones South View’s Jazmine Cooper shoots for two of her game-high 21 points during the Tigers’ sectional final win over Westover on Friday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MULTIMEDIA
Slide show by Octavio Jones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When the last two state champions of any sport meet deep in the postseason, fireworks are the typical result.
The fuse was indeed lit at Westover on Friday night as the defending state 4-A champions hosted the 2007 title winners, South View, in a sectional final.
South View started the game with an 8-0 run and that margin stood for most of the night as the Lady Tigers pulled out a 52-45 victory.
South View (28-1) will play in next week’s 4-A East Regional while Westover wraps up its season at 23-4.
“Both teams deserved to be there, and both played hard like they wanted to win it all the way through to the end,” South View coach Brent Barker said.
It was an intense, physical affair that featured a double technical, two players fouling out and a combined 43 free throws on nearly as many fouls.
None of that could wipe the smile off Tiger point guard Amber Calvin’s face.
“They were giving us a real hard time,” she said of a particularly loud section of fans. “So we just tried to smile at them the whole game.
“(This win) is really important because it shows us how we stand in good, competitive games.”
Experience helps Tigers Calvin was just one of the senior leaders who stood up for South View in a hostile environment as Jazmine Cooper poured in 21 points to lead all scorers.
“Their experience got them through,” Westover coach Gene Arrington said. “No doubt about it. We made mistake after mistake. And they capitalized on every (one).”
Most of the Lady Wolverines’ mistakes came in the shot selection category.
An over-reliance on outside shooting led to a 15-for-59 (25.4 percent) shooting night, numbers that Arrington knew all about.
“We had good looks at the basket,” he said. “We just couldn’t knock anything down. I thought we should have stayed inside with our big girl, and we got away from that. That’s what got us back in the game.”
Starting strong Five quick points from Cooper and a three-ball from Ta’nele Walker sparked South View to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes.
Westover’s shooting woes were apparent early as a 2-of-17 first quarter led to a 15-5 deficit after the first eight minutes.
But as well as things went early for the Lady Tigers, they turned south in the second period.
Walker book-ended the second quarter with a pair of free throws at each end, and those four points were the only ones scored by the visitors in the frame.
Westover trims lead Ivory Faust had seven of her team-high 17 points for Westover in the quarter as it trimmed the South View lead to 19-15 by intermission.
Calvin’s steal, layup and free throw helped the Lady Tigers take a 30-22 lead into the final period.
And what a final period it was.
The teams combined for 45 points in a furious final 8 minutes.
Double techs Chante’ Bell and Ciara Morris notched a double technical foul while Calvin — in a tough one-on-one battle with her counterpart, Brandie Reed all night — kept smiling at her hecklers in the stands.
A pair of Jasmyn Trawick free throws got Westover within five points, at 46-41 with 51 seconds left, but South View hit its last six free throws to secure the win.
Walker and Calvin joined Cooper in double figures for South View for 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Calvin seems to have that certain cockiness and swagger you want in a top point guard.
