Calvin, Tigers deny Bulls piece of crown
By Paul Shugar Staff writer ADVERTISEMENT South View secures the Two Rivers’ top seed with a close win.
South View needed guard Amber Calvin to be one of the best free-throw shooters in Cumberland County with so much on the line.
Playing on its own court, E.E. Smith made a valiant attempt Tuesday to beat the Tigers and earn a possible share of the Two Rivers regular-season championship. But Calvin and her teammates secured the 67-65 win and the conference’s top seed to the postseason from the foul line, scoring 14 of their final 18 points on free throws.
Calvin, who entered the game second in the county hitting 87 percent from the stripe, went nine of 14 in the final quarter to hold off Smith. The win locked up the senior’s fourth championship at South View, but her team overcame a slow start and a 34-33 halftime deficit to do so.
“I think everybody was a little nervous,” said Calvin, who finished with 26 points and eight rebounds. “Not being at home just made us uncomfortable.”
The Tigers pulled ahead for good on their first bucket of the second half and led by seven with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left in the game. But Golden Bulls guard Avae’ Hardy kept the pressure on with a string of late 3-pointers.
Hardy had nine of her team-high 17 points in the fourth thanks to three made shots from beyond the arc. Her second made the score 65-62 with 18.1 remaining, but the Golden Bulls couldn’t get a turnover after a timeout, forcing them to foul. Calvin hit both free throws for a five-point advantage, taking the punch out of Hardy’s final 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“We missed free throws and a lot of second-chance opportunities, especially when we had control of the boards,” said Smith coach Latanya Hardy, whose team is 18-3 overall, 9-2 in conference and must beat Lumberton on Friday to remain in second by itself. “We just had too many lapses and missed a golden opportunity.”
South View (23-1, 12-0) wrapped up this season with the county’s best offense and outscored its opponents by an average of 28.9 points per game. There was no blowout this time with so much on the line, and the Tigers struggled at moments against a defense that allowed a county-best 41.4 ppg entering Tuesday’s contest.
Smith’s Kayla Bazemore came out hot, hitting five of her first six shots for 12 quick points. She managed only two more, though, before fouling out in the fourth along with teammate Tia Moore, who scored 11.
Senior forward Jazmine Cooper kept South View in the game early, recording 12 of her 19 points in the first half. The second-best scorer in the county to Calvin, Cooper also grabbed 14 rebounds for the double-double.
Those points helped the Tigers quell nerves at halftime, when they talked about their good fortune to be in the game. The Golden Bulls hit eight of 10 free throws in the second quarter, but had only a one-point advantage because South View went an economical seven of 12 from the field in the frame..
“We felt pretty good,” Tigers coach Brent Barker said. “We felt that we had given them a lot of easy opportunities, and they had earned their chances at the line. To be down by one, we felt really fortunate.”

looks like the baby aggie took the night off and just dished out a bunch of assists. her teammate, jazmine cooper, seems to be a pretty good player also. i wonder if bibbs made a pitch for her too? cooper also made the allstar game...
Tigers roll
The 83-47 final score suggests a blowout win that South View controlled from start to finish.
But really, the Lady Tigers (24-1) only dominated for three quarters.
Pine Forest (10-16) came out swinging, getting 3-pointers from Ashley Kizzie and Mikaela Williams in the early going.
Jordan Elliot added a couple of baskets in the final minute of the opening period, and the Lady Trojans trailed by a single point, 15-14, after the first eight minutes.
South View slammed the door from there, running out to a 10-point lead at the half before building a 21-point cushion after three quarters.
Jazmine Cooper led all scorers with 21 for South View. Brittany Wade scored 12, Ciara Morris added 11 and point guard Amber Calvin scored eight points while providing a slew of assists from the point guard position.
Elliot led Pine Forest with 12 points.
