The point was he won a MEAC title and was "Coach of the Year". You can't take that from him regardless of what anyone says. He also won a conference title the Pioneer Bowl and got "Coach of the Year" at cash strapped Kentucky State. For a person who can't coach in the minds of a lot BDV posters he did alright in my book. In my opinion Small's weakness was dealing with sharks who withheld money or didn't give money to the program and thought they knew more about football than he did.
BTW, I don't think Kentucky State has won a conference title much of anything since Small left. Small wasn't as good as Hayes overall but you "couch coaches" are learning it ain't easy to win a championship especially when you are trying to win one freaking game.

Small's performance at A&T was a duplicate of his time at K State. Strong first year and he sucked every season after that. As one poster on this boards often says, "we got from Small exactly what his resume suggested we would." For some reason our administrators are a little slow in grasping this concept.

BTW Decks, Small won the SIAC Pioneer Bowl in his third year.
Freeze, we didn't fray too much because the posters are still quick to call A&T's coaches fraud be it basketball coach or football while forgetting their accomplishments. BTW Decks, Small won the SIAC in his third year. Those people also can't remember past yesterday so for all of those that thought Small inherit a treasure lode and all he had to do was spend it below is the reality:
Small roster a hurdle for Aggies coach 4-18-03 By JEFF CARLTON, Staff Writer News & Record
GREENSBORO -- Spring practice had barely begun when George Small realized he didn't have enough able-bodied players for an intrasquad football game. The first-year N.C. A&T coach barely had enough offensive linemen to make one or two substitutions.
So, Wednesday's scheduled spring game at Aggie Stadium was scrapped, and A&T instead wrapped up its three-week practice period with an hour-long scrimmage.
When he accepted the job in January, Small knew he was inheriting a team in a rebuilding mode. A&T was 4-8 with a freshman-dominated roster in Bill Hayes' final season. As Small evaluates the returning talent, the challenges ahead become more apparent.

Jazz, you might want to check your sources. My memory says Small never won the SIAC and while he won the Pioneer Bowl in his third year I don't think he had another winning season afterwards.
The reality of the situation is that the team Small inherited went 4-8 with a bunch of frosh. They also only lost one game by more than a touchdown, and they were still in that game in the fourth quarter.
While Small was hamstrung by poor monetary support from the school, he was more hamstrung by his own coaching.
While I don't think he inherited a "treasure-lode" he inherited enough to win 10 games right out the bat. He didn't improve on that. He never came close. At least at KSU he hovered around .500 the rest of his career there.

Give me Ewing all day before you give me a 5'6" guy. If you have someone that is 5'6" on the court, he's gotta have a whole lot of heat around him or he will get exposed almost each and every time down both ends of the court. High School is one thing, college is another. I think that we can agree, that we won't have any "heat" anytime soon. So, what do we really have in Hill? Just think about it for a second. What little man do you know that has been successful without help at almost every position...on any level above highschool? Signing guys like this is what makes it so easy to call Eaves a fraud. When was the last game u seen. Ewing can't guard no one. I've been to every home game and the opposing point guard is killing him every game. Get me anybody that can play defense I've seen them all at home and a few on the road. If you think Ewing is bad, what do you think a 5'6", 160 lb cat is going to do? I don't have to see homeboy play one game and I can tell you that he is a liability each and every time down the court in Eaves' system. If he played at Hampton or Morgan...maybe, because they have horses. We don't have skilled and/or physical players at more than 2 positions. How can lil man help...especially in a rebuilding year?
