Talk about it in The Locker Room
Fans of Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) basketball who saw the Bishop McNamara Mustangs playing in local summer leagues this past offseason believe that Coach Marty Keithline's McNamara squad is a legitimate candidate to be the conference's "sleeper" team in 2007-2008.
One of the biggest reason for optimism at the Forestville, Maryland, catholic school is 5'8" senior point guard Marc Hill. Hill, who is about to begin his third season as a starter at McNamara, will be able to concentrate solely on basketball his senior season as he has put his college decision behind him and ended his recruitment by verbally committing to North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Hill, who averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 2 steals a game as a junior, selected the NC A&T Aggies over a number of other Division One colleges including Morgan State and High Point College.
North Carolina A&T is a member of the increasingly competitive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Aggies are coached by former Louisville All-American and NBA player Jerry Eaves. "The North Carolina A&T program has been steadily getting better under Coach Eaves," Coach Keithline told MdVarsity.com. "Coach Eaves played in the NBA and was a member of the (1980) Louisville National Championship team. Coach Eaves and his staff did a great job of recruiting Marc."
"Marc took a visit down to Greensboro and he just really liked the school, the basketball…They really emphasized academics on the (recruiting) trip. Marc wants to major in Computer Design and Computer Graphics, they had him meet with professors from that school and he was really impressed. Marc liked the players, the coaches and where the program is going. He talked to the players and got a good feel and he liked their style of play. The A&T coaches came up here several times to see Marc, they showed Marc how much they wanted him."
"Marc basically picked A&T over Morgan State and High Point, but there were several other D-I schools involved…the visit to Greensboro really showed him that A&T was a great fit across the board."
Hill is one of the area's most underrated high school guards. He is a tough, tenacious defender and a fearless penetrator. In addition to being a creative ball handler and floor leader, Hill also is an excellent shooter out to the three point arc. Though only 5'8", Hill uses his quickness, strength and toughness to apply pressure to opposing teams on either end of the court.
As evidence of his versatility, Hill recorded 150 assists last season, but also finished in the Top 15 in the DC area in 3-point field goals made in 2006-2007. In addition to averaging double figures in scoring as a junior, Hill averaged 11 points and 4 assists per game as a sophomore in 2005-2006.
Hill earned both All-WCAC and All- Prince George's County honors as a junior.
McNamara Coach Marty Keithline is as high on Marc Hill as a person and a student as he is as a player. "Marc is a really outstanding player. He may only be 5'8", but he can score, run the offense, play defense– he is also a really good clutch player and a team leader and unselfish player. He is a three year (varsity) guy who has meant a lot to our program. He is a real good kid, an Honor Roll student. Marc is from a great family, his dad became a coach in our program. I'm really happy for him on his college choice. I think he is going to have a very good senior year for us and a very good career at North Carolina A&T."
