Why was there no ambulance at the stadium during the Spring Game? Everyone knows that we had this unfortunate injury on Saturday at the Spring Game......I have been involved with college athletics and pro sports since I finished Ayantee in 1981. I have been in at least 150 college football/basketball game operations meetings, over 700 NBA/WNBA game operations meetings and about 100 minor league baseball GameOps meetings.
Without exception, one of the first items on the agenda is: >Have the paramedics been contacted and assigned to our game? >What time will they arrive?? >Who will meet them and where will they be stationed??
I was shocked to read in the Greensboro N&R that, "it took over 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive at Truist Stadium" to attend to this situation. Why would we not have paramedics on-duty at our Spring game??
Is no one else here on BDV alarmed by this?? Did Hilton and the athletic administration not remember what happened with the Damar Hamlin situation in Buffalo? I don't know how it happened, but IMHO, this was a major error on the administration's part and could have been catastrophic to the University financially.
If I'm the only one here bothered by this, I'm OK with that.
I know that our former head athletic trainer, the late Tom "Mister B" Bynum would have never let this happen. I'm off of my soapbox.

Medical Staffing is one of the first things that should be addressed even if it's just a practice. You're correct about Mr B would never have let that happen on his watch.

From the Greensboro News & Record article...
“The spring football game at North Carolina A&T on Saturday was interrupted by an injury to a player that prompted team trainers to summon emergency medical personnel to Truist Stadium...
“...It was in the second quarter that quarterback Kevin White completed a pass over the middle to Ger-Cari Caldwell at around the 20-yard line. Inside linebacker Terian George, a sophomore from Douglasville, Georgia, was in on the tackle, but both he and Caldwell struggled to get back to their feet after the play.
Eventually, Caldwell ran to the sideline and bent over at the waist but appeared to be OK. George shed his helmet and was lying on his back. He spent nearly 20 minutes on the field before an ambulance arrived. It didn’t appear any emergency personnel was stationed at the stadium prior to the start of the game, and a trainer could be seen making a cell phone call...”
Not only could this end up being a lawsuit before it’s all over, it’s a PR Blackeye on the department’s portrait. Recruits see this! This is totally unacceptable, folks!

Everyone in the stands was asking the same question. "Where are the medics?" I think most folks were concerned how long it took them to arrive.

Is it the consensus of most people commenting on the injury in Saturday's game, that there should be an emergency unit at the stadium during contact practices as well as games? In reading the comments, one would get the impression that the university is being accused of negligence.

I do not think the State of NC requires medics as long as there is at least one certified trainer / first responder on staff.
Clearly our training staff did an outstanding job. They deserve kudos.

That injury could happen anytime they put on pads.

I bet that won’t happen again. I’m sure protocols were followed. They’ll have to get updated so that we have ambulances at scrimmages and spring games from here on out.
It gets sketchy because ambulances aren’t at most practices. Trainers are present but not emt personnel.
It’s likely expensive to have one on call at each practice but that should be the move going forward.
Add it to the cost of doing business as a D1 program.

The Training staff / Doctors were onsite and followed all protocols...this is non story...Ambulances are only available when having an actual game....this is like a practice / scrimmage... They don't even have ambulances at High School football games in triad. This a non story and I am disappointed that writer who is a brother didn't ask before making his own assumption.

This a non story and I am disappointed that writer who is a brother didn't ask before making his own assumption This is a protocol that should change. Whenever practices or scrimmages are 100 percent full speed, they should have EMT and ambulances present. They should also be present at high school games. That’s frankly dangerous for the kids to not have that. Likely, a bill will have to be filed with the NCLeg to ensure those protocols are changed.

I was at the stadium and it felt like it took way too long for the ambulance to arrive, especially since the nearest fire station is literally right around the block on Wendover Avenue.
However, I didn't get the sense that this was a life or death situation, based on the fact that George moved him arms and legs after he went down and none of the trainers on the field appeared to be panicking.
I told the folks I was sitting near that they would probably put him on a stretcher simply for precautionary measures; but I didn't like the fact that they appeared to take his helmet and shoulder pads off before the ambulance arrived.
One thing Kev is gonna do is always deflect any criticism about A&T and make it seem like everything his friends at the university do is perfect. But I think in this instance, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
I dont think our actions on Saturday put George in more danger ... but I do believe we can improve our safety protocols moving forward.

With that being said, this places a maginfying glass on a glaring blindspot of athletics within the state of North Carolina. There needs to be EMT and Ambulance at any live action football event like a scrimmage or spring practice. On the D-2 level, schools were actually conducting scrimmages between one another and those were full-speed set ups. I sully to think about the worse case scenarios here especially on the high school level. Even if the state has to foot the bill for the ambulances, they must be present at these kinds of events. It gets murky if they're required for normal practices. Many head, neck, and spinal injuries occur during practice. www.foxcarolina.com/2023/10/27/practice-not-policy-ambulances-high-school-football-games/
