FAMU had no viable strategic plan back in the early 2000s when they made that failed attempt at moving up to FBS.
If I recall, famu petitioned the ncaa for the move to D1-A based on a so-called TV contract with some woman's company out of New York. This plan was to generate enough revenue to support famu's move. However, there was a misunderstanding between the two incompetent entities, famu and the NY company that was to generate the revenue to support this ambitious plan through national TV. The plan allowed famu to talk down to its former conference members by telling them and the MEAC to kiss their hind parts because they were leaving. They had an ambitious schedule, which included the likes of Oklahoma and others, only to find out that their deal with the NY company was as weak as a wet paper towel. The whole idea fell apart and the major schools dropped famu from their schedule. As a result, they had to beg their way back into the MEAC. The story goes somewhat like that. YES, INDEED...that TV pipe dream was a part of that decision.

I was talkin to a cat at my son's soccer practice a couple weeks ago. He had on a Georgia Southern t-shirt (and mask) so that got my attention. He said "moving to FBS was the best decision the school ever made." He said the whole town of Statesboro has grown as a result of the move, and the school has grown exponentially.
If planned right, it's worth it. Hell, we ain't never gonna bust a grape on the FCS level either, might as well move up and go to somebody's bull$h*t bowl provided we plan right.
...And it's gone cost a lot. But if we say we'll never get there, we're right. If we say we can, we're right. Martin and Hilton are more of the "we can" type than the "we can't" type.
We're not that far removed from multiple winless years. They've proven they know how to strategically plan to put us in a position to be competitive without stretching us to the limit. I trust them.
If we say we can, we're right. Martin and Hilton are more of the "we can" type than the "we can't" type.

so now we're comparing our hbcu resources to that of pwc's? really? omg. when somebody "proves" to me that a&t has equal to (or more) "sustainable" funding for football as the "average" fbs schools have, then and only then will it make sense to at least "think about" going to the fbs level.
man, i see that "aggie cool-aide" is really potent. just because we beat amongst the fbs "weakest" 3 football teams at the time we played them, folk think we're ready for primetime. omg! some of ya'll act like this is "fantasy football". we can't even keep our doggone "grass green" but yet some of you bozo's think a&t has (or will have) adequate funding to compete against fbs/bcs schools "permanently".
its embarrassing enough to be the only fcs school that i know of that plays football on "dead grass" every late fall. just wait and see how much more embarrassing it'll be to be the only fbs school that plays on "dead grass".
can't wait to see the "cost" of upgrading our facilities and football budget to "equal" or exceed that of the average fbs school. so i'm sure that little $20 million fundraising campaign to enhance aggie stadium is already in the bank. and i'm sure it won't take long to raise another $25 million to build an indoor practice facility. and what about a true "training table" and nutrition program like the vast majority of fbs schools have? i'm sure that's not far away either. then, we're probably gonna need another $20 million to upgrade the bryan fitness center to be competitive with other fbs schools.
then we'll also need a "ton" of money for "air" travel expenses because there is no fbs conference near our area (if "any" at all) that's willing to add an hbcu to their conference. welp, so much for joining the bsc to save travel expenses and caring about the traveling toll on our student athletes.
yeah man!! our future looks "bright" to go fbs!! we can do this!! we've got just as much money as the average fbs school!! and we're ready to travel to states like kentucky, florida, west virginia, and texas for all of our teams. and what about that "grass"?

I think Martin and Hilton are more of the "we will" type. They're very logical and strategic in their moves as opposed to irrational and emotional, and it's worked in practically everything they've done with Ayantee even if it looked crazy at first. We have unarguably the best administration of all hbcus. I hardly ever question their moves anymore because when I do so they invariably prove me wrong down the line; with graphs and charts! IF FBS is in the future plans it will be done logically and strategically, and it will prove to be successful.

don't have to move to fbs to play those teams if that's what going fbs means... There are better financial terms playing them as an FBS team.

There are better financial terms playing them as an FBS team. won't come "remotely close" to compensating for the total "funding" it takes to compete at the fbs level. that's like buying a rolls royce to become an uber driver. besides, how is there better financial terms playing an fbs team if you're also an fbs team? you stand to make more playing them as an fcs team...

As I stated above the benefits are extraordinary. Bowl payouts alone should drastically increase revenue. If the benefits weren't there our administration wouldn't so much as mention it in the first place. The school benefits across the board.
Like it or not our Chancellor appears to be intent on raising the status of OUR alma mater and doing it properly. Going FBS doesn't mean turning into Clempson but when you consider there are a number of schools we competed with and/or beat in the past 10-15 years that have made the move and are all enjoying the benefits thereof, it doesn't really make since to just sit there and watch them and say "we's can'ts does that."

you have to be invited to a bowl game to make significant money on a bowl game...

I would be more than happy will just being in the Sunbelt. Give me whatever App State has right now. Speaking of App State: Some firsts for the App State football program include: • First FCS team to defeat a nationally ranked FBS team (34-32 vs. No. 5 Michigan in 2007) • First FCS team to receive votes in the AP Top 25 poll (2007) • First team to win three straight NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) national titles (2005-07) • First team to win a bowl game in each of its first two years of FBS bowl eligibility (2015-16) • First team to win a bowl game in each of its first three years of FBS bowl eligibility (2015-17) • First team to win a bowl game in each of its first four years of FBS bowl eligibility (2015-18) • Hosted and won the first Sun Belt Championship Game (2018) • First Sun Belt team to be ranked Top 25 on multiple occasions (2018, 2019) • First Sun Belt team to win as a Top 25 team (2019) • First Sun Belt team to be ranked Top 25 in consecutive weeks (2019) sunbeltsports.org/news/2019/10/20/appalachian-state-football-makes-history-with-win-rankings.aspx
