Marketting Dooms, marketting. Elon football is more visible over the last few years. More people care about Elon football than previously. I still believe this game has too much potential.
In 2006: Elon 45-0 - We finished the season 0-11; attendance (2,768) was poor because we sucked - this game was the 2nd to last game of the year. Neither Phoenix nor Aggies showed up for that crap in Greensboro.
In 2005: Elon won 12-9. 9,250 folks were at Alumni Stadium . The game was earlier in the year, where both teams had not revealed themselves yet as to how good/bad they would be. We finished the season 3-8. We entered that game 1-2.
In 2004: A&T won in Greensboro 19-17. 8,250 fans saw this game. Folks are clamoring about where are the Phoenix fans - where were the Aggie fans?
In 2003: A&T beat Elon 29-14 in front of 10,250 fans. Aggies were in there deep. We finished that year 10-3.
I think Aggies are as much to blame for poor showings at Aggie Stadium than the Phoenix fans. Furthermore, our football has been extremely miserable to where no excitement could realistically be generated from an Aggie-Elon game. A&T is better. Elon is better. Both programs appear to be much healthier and have a greater foothold in the local area vs just 7-10 years ago.
This game has much more potential than an Aggie/SWAC, Aggie/Tenn St, Aggie/VUL matchup. Broadway has generated enough enthusiasm to where more Aggies will show to our own home games - again; you cannot rely upon another school to boost you financially. It's a losing proposition....

saabman, can you please elaborate on your post? i'm thinking uncc could go either way since they're new and don't have a track record of any sort yet. app could be a potential gain since they're winning. i would like to see them come back to aggieland, though they still might be spooked from the last time that happened. coastal has been fair. not spectacular, just fair. tenn state could possibly be good. it would be interesting to see what would come of that one if a home-home series was established. as it stands now, we only see each other in classics or the playoffs. Be glad to : We are focusing on teams like Elon and others that have fans that will not travel to Aggie Stadium to support their team like we do So why don't we go with the teams in Greensboro!! Greensboro College has a up and coming program in the USA South Conference or Guilford College of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference> The only problem I see with the two teams is, They are D-3 programs! But playing the likes of VUL and W. Va State, two teams that we have to pay too come too Aggie Stadium we just as well play them and keep it in the city

I agree with everything naborhoodsuperstar said. Exactly what I was thinking, he just said it better. We shouldn't care about other people. We need to look out for us and promote our own games. Aggies/SWAC is a game that has no substance and wont do anything for the program but create a bigger travel budget unless it's in a classic like Circle City.
Put UNCC high on my list as well in 2015. NCCU is smart enough to have already scheduled them, so I hope we are as well.

nss, cool i understand you now.
i don't think anyone is saying/planning on having another team come in and fill our stadium. yes, the more we win the more butts we put in the seats. we as aggies love to win...it's what we do. everyone loves a winner. i don't see how one can realistically deny that the general traveling tendency of the opposition's fan is not a factor - though arguably small - when considering ooc opponents. after all, this is a business deal and all factors need to be examined (if "success" is what we're going for).

I think the point he is making is that there is no difference for US when playing Elon. I cant think of one out-of-conference FCS opponent that will bring more than a few hundred with them except for App. So if there is no difference then we should go with the smaller travel budget. And since Elon and UNNC are so close they do have the POTENTIAL to grow a crowd. No one else does. If we wanted Elon to bring more people we should have partnered with them to have shuttles pic up their students and charge them $20 each for ticket and a round trip. It's plenty of things we can do to make this game more enticing for them to come to and help out our bottom line.

I'm not primarily concerned about us or them filling our stadium. I'm concerned about us filling their stadium, which is what we do every time we play them. Hell, if you want to donate money to opponents, just give to their annual fund directly instead of clamoring to play them.
It is a very unfair trade that they will not come to our stadium. We can market until the cows come home, but they ain't coming. If anything, we should be looking at the best traveling schools and trying to get them to play us. That we we at least know we can have a somewhat more fair exchange.
If you look at it purely from the standpoint of the quality of the competition you are forgetting that quality competition is usually quality because they have the money to pay for it. Why help them, especially when armed with the knowledge that they won't help us?
I wouldn't play anybody who only can bring a few hundred fans, which is what you get with Elon and Coastal. Meanwhile their ticket offices are smiling all the way to the bank. They get a free win and a free windfall.

Again I agree with Dooms. How much marketing are they buying for us to fill up their stadium? Why do we have to go "above and beyond" to get them to our place?

fellas, i believe these are all valid points. i'm seeing what both sides are saying. it is basically a slap in the face that fans of schools such as elon and coastal refuse to travel to us. but then we do need to improve our product/program. i believe we're on course for that now. outside of the usual suspects, who has brought a sizeable contingent to aggie stadium??

You guys keeps saying they only bring a few hundred, but what non-conference FCS opponent would bring any more than that? It would be lopsided no matter who we play. App would be the only school right now in my opinion. I'm not even sure they would travel TO US well.

From Elon's perspective, that would be NC A&T!

From Elon's perspective, that would be NC A&T! True, but still not an answer to my question. Cause there isn't one other than App. We should jump on the UNCC hype as soon as we can. Maybe they will travel well until they start getting blown away.

A&T maybe one of a few FCS/HBCU's schools that travels well. And that is mostly confined to a Regional aspect if you really look at it! This is just a catch -22! WSSU is out, Elon fans will not come to Aggie Stadium. The culture of the fan base has changed so much and Most schools have Failed to keep up. A&T will always have their diehard football fans that will find away to attend games where ever A&T is playing. If we wont butts in the sets we must find away to reach the everyday REGULAR and Semi regular fan and their families.

Yes, pursue UNCC. IMO, Elon has shown their hand and not worth any further investment (unless they guarantee ticket sales ;D). PS. AM, I was waiting on you to answer my questions before I answer yours.
