Playing any SWAC team makes absolutely no sense, either home or away. Whether it be JSU or Grambling, we won't travel well there or vice versa. I don't have a problem with a WSSU game as it will always be a financial success. The game that needs to be cultivated again is Elon vs A&T. I still believe this game can be a sellout with proper marketing from both schools. Recruits, bragging rights, Triad/Triangle implications - this game makes too much sense.....

Elon doesn't bring anyone to our stadium and every time we go down there we set attendance records. And they are 30 mins away.

ELON!! PLEASE DON'T MENTION ELON AGAIN NABOR. THEY NEVER EVER BROUGHT MORE THAN 400 PEOPLE TO OUR STADIUM AT ANY TIME. WHEN WE PLAYED AT THERE STADIUM OUR SIDE WOULD BE PACKED TO THE BONE. THEY MADE A KILLING OFF OF US FINANCIALLY. I DON'T CARE HOW THIS GAME IS PUBLICIZED THEY AIN'T COMING TO AGGIE STADIUM. SO MOVE ON. PLUS, I DID NOT LIKE THE WAY THEY MADE OUR BAND WAIT TO THE END OF THE GAME TO PERFORM. THAT WAS AN INSULT TO ME. BLANK ELON!!
I WOULD ADD WSSU AND MAYBE GRAMBLING, SOUTHERN OR ANOTHER SWAC OPPONENT IN PLACE OF W. VIRGINIA AND THAT OTHER SCHOOL. BLANK ELON!!

My hope is that we do NOT get into the habit of playing FBS beatdown games. Other than a check we gain nothing from it but a good old fashion foot up the rear.
There are too many other FCS teams out there we could reach out for possible games with other than playing 1)VUL/WVSU 2) Beatdown Games
1) Keep Coastal on Schedule 2) Western/Charleston Southern/Presbyterian/Gardner Webb (Not attractive games from a FAN's point of view) BUT all winnable FCS matchups and much better than padding the schedule with creampuff games.... 3) SWAC opponent and/or Tenn St. 4) Do like Decks stated offer $75k to WSSU and if they take it put game on schedule, if they pitch a fit and try to play hardball show them the door and leave it alone....

The CHECK is the reason for these so-called "beatdown games." That infusion of cash is vital to the budget. One such game a season for maybe 4 straight years could mean the difference in a healthy budget and a struggling one.

This shouldn't be a problem with an extra game available on the schedule when the APR gets back up. I also do not want to see a SWAC team on the schedule. As far money and strength of schedule, it's pointless. We have enough FCS schools in our backyard to not have to play a SWAC school. They would bring about as many people as a Coastal, App, Elon, UNCC, etc, etc would, but we wouldn't have to go far for a return game.

You guys need to put your AD cap on when talking about non-conference games. You have to consider budget vs. return(strength of schedule).
These are the only teams that make sense if we are not doing a FBS money game or paying a cupcake like VUL to come in for about $15,000 or a "Classic".
They all work better than a SWAC matchup in terms of money because of the travel time for the return game. They are also better for strength of schedule because they come from a automatic playoff birth conference.
In no particular order: ELON App UNCC Gardner Webb Wofford Coastal Carolina Liberty VMI ***WSSU(asterik for obvious reason of being div2)
Its going to be a long season with 12 games. We already have some decent travel within the conference. Might as well make the non-conference schedule a little less grueling and softer on the pocket.
A SWAC rivalry will never stand the test of time. So why go through the headache for nothing? Might as well stay home and maybe UNCC, Elon, App, or whomever will be a satisfying opponent for years to come.

^^^ That's true! And I would add Western Carolina and Tennessee State to that list. I would really love to see us re-establish our relationship with the TSU Big Blue Tigers in both football and basketball. The one that I don't like is Elon. I hate to admit it, but I agree with The Professor in that Elon really doesn't bring anything to the table for us. Like he said, we pack their place and then they bring a couple hundred folks to Aggie Stadium. I believe that WCU would bring just as many folks. (SC State found out the same thing in playing Wofford and Furman, as did FAMU in playing Georgia Southern...they don't bring a return in ticket revenue when you play them at home.)

Lets not get stuck on how sorry other schools fans are. We have to do what's in our best interest. If Elon saves us money I would rather play them than go to Tenn State. It's not like they will pack the house on a return game either. Western definitely wont. The only thing Tenn State might do is bring the band and that has no effect on revenue. NOt to mention playing Elon gives fans another chance to see the team live. Who's going to Western?

saabman, can you please elaborate on your post?
i'm thinking uncc could go either way since they're new and don't have a track record of any sort yet. app could be a potential gain since they're winning. i would like to see them come back to aggieland, though they still might be spooked from the last time that happened. coastal has been fair. not spectacular, just fair. tenn state could possibly be good. it would be interesting to see what would come of that one if a home-home series was established. as it stands now, we only see each other in classics or the playoffs.

You cannot rely upon another school to fill your stadium. Name a successful program (FCS or FBS) that is begging its opposition to fill its stadium? If your program is about something, your stands should be filled....WITH YOUR OWN CONTINGENCY.
We can agree to disagree - this ain't the first time. Elon football is a solid SoCon program. Elon is a realistic measuring stick for our program. They are a natural rival. We are fishing the same high schools for recruits. We have new coaches. The comparisons go on and on.
Some schools in our own conference don't even travel well to play us. I think the point of of scheduling someone based on how well they travel to our stadium should not be a primary reason why to (or not) schedule an opponent.

My concern with playing Elon is that we end up pretty much donating thousands and thousands of dollars to their program by playing them at their place. We ultimately are making them a better funded program.
Same problem with Coastal.
