Special to the News-HeraldSuffolk, VA -The excitement and promise of National Signing Day filled Nansemond River High School on Wednesday morning, as four students signed athletic commitments and two more received academic scholarships. All but one of the students was from the school football team, and head coach Tracey Parker was excited for them. “As a coach, it’s a great accomplishment to have young men to have an opportunity to not only go on and play football at the collegiate level, but to get an education as well and to get an education that’s paid for,” Parker said. Running back LaMont Brown rushed for over 1,500 yards this season, second in the Eastern region, and signed with Morgan State University. While introducing Brown, Parker told the story of how Brown’s father had encouraged the coach to play Brown as early as the eighth grade. When asked what today meant to him, Brown said, “This is what every kid dreams about when he starts playing football when he’s little — to go D1 and hopefully get to the (NFL). This is where my dream begins. Hopefully, it carries me to where I want to go and I end up in the League. But if I don’t, I’ll still be happy.” Defensive lineman Corey Barnes was a three-year starter for the Warriors, and he committed to Delaware State University. Parker said that even though the defensive line was Barnes’ preferred position, he had a willingness to play wherever he was needed. Fulfillment defined Barnes’ thoughts of the day: “I’ve been dreaming about it since I was a little boy. For my dreams to come true, it means a lot to me.” Defensive end Willie Gillus served as team captain for the Warriors and signed with Morgan State University. Parker described Gillus as being a standout because of his strong leadership and character. Gillus was out with an injury for part of the season, but he returned to help lead the team to its best season in years. Indoor track standout Shakeela Saunders signed a commitment to attend Kentucky University. For 2012, Saunders is currently No. 1 in the nation in the long jump and the 4×200 relay. Girls’ track coach Marissa Post praised Saunders for being a model athlete who has not only achieved great things personally but has also helped her teammates become better at the same time. “This is a big step,” Saunders said, referring to the signing. She indicated that the coach from Kentucky had been recruiting her since July. Saunders confirmed that she has Olympic aspirations. Brent McPherson signed an academic scholarship with North Carolina A&T.
When asked what impact the day had on him, McPherson applied football lessons to schoolwork and expressed what consistent, hard work can do.
“Football taught me all the necessary discipline to succeed in the class. It’s a lot to take in, because you’re studying stuff, you work hard every day, late nights, and it’s paying off right now.”Cornerback/tight end Corinth Cross received an academic scholarship to West Point. Parker described Cross as an excellent student who would tutor others, including his teammates. “It’s overwhelming right now,” Cross said. “All this work, all these four years of hard work is paying off finally (with) this last acceptance. I’m just happy, that’s all I can say.” Highlight clips- www.hudl.com/athlete/493021/ Didn't see a lot of distance or height on his punts. Maybe his leg will get stronger next year or he will push the incumbent from this year.

Broadway gets a punter & he still holds on to an extra scholarship.

broadway brought in 4 very capable qb's. if all 4 remain qb's as their primary position for a&t, i would think 1 or 2 of them would redshirt. i haven't seen boyan or quick on video yet, so i don't have an opinion of which of the 4 may redshirt. since belcher averaged 40 yards per punt in high school, they may want to keep him active as a backup punter. or, perhaps one or more of them may be moved to another position. but i would definitely keep bamiro at the qb position, can't teach 6'5"... Quick out of Scotland may be the fastest and most elusive of the four. www.youtube.com/scotlandfan2011#p/fJust looking at his videos, he seems to have that "wiggle" that Coach Lee always looked for. He's the kind of QB that can keep the chains moving if the passing game is not working. Who will redshirt? Tough decisions for the coaches. Quick offers a level of elusiveness the other QBs don't have. Belcher seems to be a better passer, punter and has good speed. I would keep those two. Bamiro may benefit from a redshirt year since I read somewhere that he just recently began playing the position. He may be the QB of the future for A&T. I haven't had a chance to view the 2 star SC QB. He is the wild card.

McPhearson is a one step punter, averaged 41 yds per kick but his biggest asset is placement.
We don't need 70-yard punts although that might be nice, but 40 yards per kick with great placement deep inside the redzone if we're near our own 35-40 and getting off the kick under pressure is the big thing in the kicking game we were missing.
We simply had way too many punts blocked or tipped. The one step technique is priceless if you kicking from deep in your own end of the field.

Here are the highlight videos of QB Marquis Boyan 6-0, 180 from Eau Clair HS in South Carolina. He also can play SS and WR as well. A real versatile athlete. The big competitors for him were Georgia State and Furman. We actually stole him from Georgia State after he gave them a verbal back in November. www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1LOwRMYLCE www.athletevault.com/index.php?id=4740

I love his quick feet and the way he stays with his blocks which allows him to push the defender down the field.

The kid Quick QB, according to Broadway at the signing party, is slated to play DB here at A&T. Broadway did hint that Quick might still play a little QB but coach Washington (DC) said no way. Washington is also the DB coach.

Forrester will do battle with red shirt sophomore Kortland Jackson (6-2, 285) for the center spot and we willl need to fill the right tackle spot but in any event, A&T is going to very deep, very big, very strong, and downright mean. Wagner has some real "beasts" up front for 2012.
Quick? He'll play on both sides at some point most likely but they want his size and speed in the secondary but he get a shot at QB in the fall camp. He's just too good of an athlete not to have on the field in some respect.

He is going to be a huge mismatch for anyone that tries to cover him. The kid is just plain huge, an athletic leaper, and fast.
