North Carolina A&T has been picked to play in the 16-team women’s Preseason NIT in November.
The Aggies, who won the MEAC championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament appearance last season, will open at Marist on Nov. 13 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
“An invite to a tournament of this magnitude is truly an honor,’’ A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs said. “Out of roughly 300 Division I schools, we are one of 16 teams invited. It shows the women’s college basketball world is paying attention to this program, and what it has accomplished over the past few seasons. This will be an outstanding experience for my ladies.”
The winner will move on to play the winner of the Towson at West Virginia game and the loser will be re-grouped into the consolation bracket of two four-team pools for two more games. Teams that lose in the quarterfinals will also play a third game.
“Our players really deserve this,’’ said Bibbs, who is 77-47 with the Aggies. “In order to be considered for this tournament you must have a pretty good RPI. That means our young ladies have put in the work it takes to win a lot of games. I’m proud of them.”
A&T has emerged as the top team in the MEAC and has topped the school record for wins the past two seasons. The Aggies went 26-7 overall last season with road wins against East Carolina and the Charlotte 49ers, and 15-1 in the MEAC for the second straight year. They also won the league tournament for the first time in 15 years.
A&T is one of 11 schools in the preseason NIT to play in the NCAA tournament in March. The only other Carolinas program in the field is Winthrop. The Aggies return five seniors, including three-year starters Lamona Smalley and Ta’Wuana Cook.
