That young man sounds like he is dumb - the kind of dumbness that doesn't get better with age. If he can't see the merits of playing at A&T versus playing at a NAIA school, then that says something to me about his basic intelligence level. I think Eaves would be better off without him. i realize a&t isn't for everyone... & everyone is not ready for a&t... what eaves need most are kids who really want to be here... other wise hes fighting an up-hill battle...

I read an article about CJ Penny that said he has wanted to play for Louisville since he was a kid. The article indicated that was his top goal. I suspect he plans to transfer after one or two years of NAIA ball. I guess time will tell on that.
I don't know but I would say this is a kid that probably only thinks he can play basketball after college by attending a big Div 1 school. Probably does not know any one that has graduated from a Div 1 sports HBCU. Probably is not looking at the value of an education just wanting to play ball on a big stage. Probably looks at playing at T like going to Central State of Ohio or Kentucky State because that what his friends think. Not unlike so many missed guided young athletically talented black youth!!!
This is a classic case of a kid that is more than likely going to wish he made a different choice 2-4 years from know.

The C.J. Penny Saga ends with Penny leaving Aggieland to ride into the sunset searching for a home

Coach Eaves, please show some self respect and tell this kid that you are rescinding your scholarship offer.
The best lesson that you can teach this young man is that life is short and you need to take advantage of all your opportunities when they present themselves.
Right now, this kid is on a path to be another one of those 60-year-old men with a whole lot of regrets.

come on guys. don't be so hard on penney. if dude's heart is not into aggieland, we can't blame him for that. besides, i just don't get too excited over native kentucky ballers. i just don't. witter, upchurch, smith, and buck all come from areas known for producing standout basketball players. i don't know any of these players personally, but based on reports, i'd rather have upchurch than penney.
i read in one of the reports that penney needs to work on his jump shot. what! you mean to tell me a 22 ppg high school guard "with a power forward's body" needs to work on his jump shot? that kinda tells me he gets his points by over powering smaller guards. well, at 6'5", that won't work at the d1 level. not even the meac! and if he has a power forward's type body, he ain't gonna blow by too many guards at the d1 level.
yet, i still hope he'll sign but i won't be heartbroken if he doesn't...

Oleschool and fellow Aggies, it is over, Penny is not coming to A&T. I do admire the young man for not taking a scholarship from a school he really didn't want to attend. I wish him all the best.

I think Penny is a moron, but how much blame should Eaves get for not being able to close the deal on this one?
Is it fair to wonder if another coach would have been able to sell Penny on the idea of playing here?

I think a mistake that many of you are making is that you think everyone views T the way you do. For decent to good basketball players.......A&T is a HARD SELL!!!! When other schools come into play like WKU etc, it becomes a no-brainer. Every kid that wants to play these days, is looking at basketball after college. Eaves can't recruit on things like that. Whether they are warranted or not, this kid has aspirations. With that being said and believe it or not, I agree with oldeschool on this one. Let him go. He was probably fool's gold anyway. And that's what I've been saying from the beginning!

A& vs. WKU is one thing ... A&T vs. some NAIA school is another thing entirely.

Is it fair to wonder if another coach would have been able to sell Penny on the idea of playing here? No Thrilla, even I wouldn't put that on Eaves. I definitely think that he could recruit better, but some kids are just not going to come. But the system is broken. There are so many things that are broken that a good personal assistant could fix in a week that could have made the difference with a kid like this. For instance. Twitter or Facebook. What if there was a page by the "A&T faithful" (but really being pushed by someone close to the program) designed specifically to praise Penney and to express how much he would be appreciated at this school! Simple things like this position better recruiters over others in a kid's mind.

A& vs. WKU is one thing ... A&T vs. some NAIA school is another thing entirely. I agree, and that is why the red flag went straight up for me. No one else wanted him. I was yelling and screaming that in the first couple pages of this thread. lol

We had the exact same thing here on this thread. Everyone was excited about Penny ... until he began to show how much of a flake he was.
All someone had to do was email him a link to this thread every day ... until we started dissing him. LOL

i'm not very disappointed that penney didn't sign. unless he's got some speed and quickness and a whole lot of ups to go along with that 6'5" power forward's body, i don't think he'd fit into jerry's system anyway. but i'm gonna keep my eye on upchurch. based on reports, i much rather have upchurch than penney.
upchurch has more size (6'7") than penney, probably played against much better competition, can definitely fill it up, and he's a slasher. sounds a lot like ej to me, but hopefully a lot more consistent.
and i've also got a gut feeling that there may be one or two small surprises already on our roster. one of them is dwane joshua. he showed flashes last season as a jc transfer. i think he just needed a year to get acclimated to d1 ball. i believe he'll become a primary scorer next season.
the other small surprise may shock some folks. he didn't play very much at all last season and granted, i've only seen him in action a couple of times. but the short amount of time i've seen him play, he played with the kind of energy that i like. and that's brock moorman. i haven't seen him enough to judge his overall game per se, but i saw quickness and energy in his game. at 6'6", i hope he has a handle because i could picture him at a small forward position with the ability to stick his nose in the middle and grab rebounds. moorman is my dark horse going into next season...

ahhbigboy,
I think the site did praise Penny he was the subject of much positive talk. I think you were the first one to throw up red flags regarding the kids basketball ability and the soft recruting process from other Div 1 schools for Penny. For all we know maybe he reads the site; I am sure he probably knows Coleman maybe he turned him on to the BDV.
But time will tell hopefully we will be able to keep track of him and we will all know who missed out on who!!!

Oldschool,
I hope you are right about Moorman; I agree he had energy but he seemed out of control. Sort like a bucking bronco. Granted we only saw a glimps of him.
But maybe that energy will turn into a great defensive stopper or rebounder
