The spread's a good fit for Stevens. Right now he's probably the starter by default. We don't have too many qbs on the roster and only two with any game experience (Stevens and Marcus Hammond), however meager, whatsoever. We're probably going to have to get another one from somewhere before the fall. I think Smith's left school.
Think SC State, think FAMU, think Clemson, think Texas and Texas A&M, hell, think us during Hayes' last year. Three or four wideouts, shotgun, lot's of handoffs and qb runs. That's what I'm thinking we'll see.

Smith was still on the team according to coach Stewart and working out hard. Whoever gets the start at QB will probably have some guady passing stats by year end because the spread requires the backs to be able to catch and run out of the backfield.
But the QB in a spread is like Dooms said. He will have to be accurate with his passes and make quick decisions before anything else.
Fobbs will most probably try to open of the field and get Sweeney, Speight, Ferguson, Truesdale, and the 2 redshirt RBs the ball on the run and let them make plays off the delays draws, screens, pitches, and options rather than running a standard power I formation.
The expereinced backs we have are all speed types, about the same size 5-9 to 5-11, 180 -195 pounds except the two redshirts and they really cannot take a pounding for 25 or 30 carries as any one single individual every single week although Sweeney is awfully good.

Smith is not in school. He withdrew from classes before the end of the first semester.

Well that simplfies things somewhat. I had talked to Stewart right before Thankgsgiving so that was news to me. Guess he'll head for Western Carolina from here. I'd like to see Miller or one of the younger QBs get a shot this fall in the interest of long term development of a couple of capable QBs for the next four years.

I'd just like to see the best person for the job get it, and to see us be far enough ahead in the second half to give others meaningful playing time.
I wonder if Hammond figures into the mix at qb at all. All I saw of him was dropped snaps in the Howard fiasco.

I would like to see Herb Miller get a shot at QB. I saw him play for Carver in H.S. and he was a really good QB. He would have to improve his passing, which was okay, but his running ablility and speed is exceptional. His running ability and his speed is the reason Small tried to make him a WR last season. I think QB is his position.

What's or receiving corps look like coming back to help out these qb's? Is our line capable of holding up under any type of real pressure that's normally thrown at a spread offense? Why are these qb's so skinny? Jewan Manuel has the build of a bballer, not a qb.

I agree with you. Miller reminds me of a fast version of Connell Maynor, able to run in the open field, the option if needed, and make big plays with his footwork. His arm is good enough if we are going to run the spread and throw the 7-10 yard short passes on first down as a way staying in short yardage situations making it easier to run the football.
That is pretty much what Maynor did in the Wing-T while using more shotgun his senior year with the green light to take off if an opening appeared. What he did have was All-American Craig Thompson, a really good pass catching TE, who was able to stretch the defense because of his speed. That has been the big missing ingredient in our offense for at least four years.
I'm not sold on Stevens as the main guy going into the spring but he might pan out under under Fobbs if he chooses to spread things out.
If the offense is to be geared that to a spread fashion then all three of the younger QBs (Manuel, Miller, and Morgan) fit right into that mold.

I don't know how our WR's or OL might pan out this year but all the QB's have the type body frames that with some weight training can very well be over 200 pounds. I don't think weight is that big of an issue for QB's anyway.

www.roxboro-courier.com/LocalSports/ls020406-4.htmMorgan Vincent signs with NC A&T By KELLY SNOW, C-T Sports Editor Morgan Vincent will not have to travel far to continue his football career. Person’s senior middle linebacker signed his letter of intent Wednesday to attend North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. Vincent chose A&T over fellow Mideastern Athletic Conference college South Carolina State and Pasadena (Calif.) Junior College. He was swayed towards A&T after a recent official visit. “The atmosphere is great. It’s my kind of school,” Vincent said. “I like the spirit in the school. There are a lot of nice people there especially on the football team.” Vincent, a 6-foot-1 255-pound senior, was a four-year starter on the defense and named to the All-PAC-6 team each season and earned All-Area honors three times. He finished his career with 343 tackles and 18 sacks. “His intensity level makes him. I remember starting him on the varsity his first year and being amazed how intense and how hard he got after it on every snap,” Person head coach Mark Lunsford said. “He’s been the leader of our defensive unit for three years since we moved him to linebacker in his 10th grade year. Anytime he wasn’t in the lineup you could definitely tell it. He’s definitely come a long way. Anytime you’re a senior you have to take more of a leadership roll.” Vincent was being courted early in the recruiting process by North Carolina and East Carolina but is satisfied with his decision to attend the Division 1-AA university.“At first I wanted to go to Carolina, but it just didn’t fit my style,” Vincent said. “To put it this way, I wouldn’t feel comfortable in that atmosphere. At A&T, I’ll get more opportunity to shine and more starting time.”The Rockets’ defensive captain joins fourteen others in first-year head coach Lee Fobbs’ initial recruiting class. He inherits an Aggie squad that was 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC in 2005, after serving as the running backs coach at Texas A&M for the past three season. “A&T is an excellent school. They’re a Division 1-AA school that over the past few years has been to the playoffs and they’ve won the MEAC conference on several occasions,” Lunsford said. “I feel real good about the new coach they brought in. I really think that Morgan’s going to bring a lot there, and they’re going to offer him a lot too. I think it’s a good fit all around.”Vincent doesn’t expect to be redshirted and hopes to be seeing time at linebacker, fullback, and possibly defensive end. He will be joining a defense that surrendered 238 points last season, the third most in the MEAC.

Bigboy,
I think you may be on to something with those guys having the frames to add some significant weight w/o losing their speed and athleticism, if they stick with a good program.
However, weight could become an issue if you have a 170-190 lb QB getting landed on by 250-300 lb DL 5 or more times a game.

It depends. Bethune Cookman's qb's are around 180 or so and carry the ball around 20 times a game. Few injuries. The difference is they are little running backs.
