The team was already picked when that happened. I remember it like it was yesterday. I wouldn't even have brought it up if that was the case. i don't know aahhbigboy... you have a case of selective amnesia from time to time... & besides... robert johnson was picked to play in the east/west gm... didn't josh chavis & will graves play in the east/west gm... ?

oh man, you're sad. no matter what eaves does, you find something wrong with it. you criticize him for recruiting kentucky and now he recruits a north carolina kid who averages nearly 20 ppg and made the east west all star game, and the best you can do is trash the east west all star game? You remember when I was telling some of you that the east/west and north/south games were pure politics? Well, Akeem Richmond (Southern Lee) who led the state in scoring his last 2 years and made all-state his last 3 was left off the roster! Coach Peace is the NC coach and he coaches 5 minutes away from this kid. How can one explain that? It's retarded.

Therefore, you can't complain if a player comes to Aggieland with no all-state credential.
Yea Aahhbigboy, you are making the point (that have been mentioned by others) that it's a little more complicated in critiquing a high school player than just reading press clippings and looking him up on the internet.

I agree with that Jazz. My heavy criticism last year was that there was virtually no information on any of the signees. The best recruit was 5'6". This year, I have no criticism. I'm skeptical, but I have no criticism. There is good information out there on the kids coming in that I can, AT LEAST, base some level of thought on. We didn't have that last year. And you'll never see me complain because so one has no all-state credentials.

AGGIES ANNOUNCE 2009-10 RECRUITING CLASS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GREENSBORO, June 24, 2009 – If there ever was a recruiting class that personified what North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coach Jerry Eaves likes in a player, the 2009-10 class is it.
Eaves announced the completion of his 2009-10 class on Wednesday with signing of four future Aggies. Three of the players are between 6-foot-5 and 6-8, have impressive wing spans and can do a variety of things on the basketball court. While shorter than the other three, the fourth also has an impressive wing span and loves to play defense.
Austin Witter, DaMetrius Upchurch, Lawrence Smith and R.J. Buck are looking to lead the Aggies to championship glory over the next four seasons. “We will have tremendous athleticism this season,’’ said Eaves, who is entering his seventh season as the Aggies head coach. “We will be able to really get after people with our pressure because we can come at people in waves with long, athletic players.”
Witter (6-8, 190 pounds, Princeton Junction, N.J.) can play as a shooting guard or a small forward. He averaged 14.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, 6.6 blocks, 3.8 assists; shot 47 percent from the field and from 3-point range. Witter also recorded nine triple doubles, and led West-Windsor South to the best record in school history at 24-4.
The Trentonian named Witter its 2008-09 Colonial Valley Conference Player of the Year after he led the Pirates to the CVC Colonial Division title and the Central Jersey Group IV championship.
“Austin is a four-year Ed Jones,’’ said Eaves, comparing Witter to the 6-8 Jones who led the Aggies in scoring last season. “He can really handle the ball, he can shoot the three and he will dunk it on your head. Before he leaves A&T, I envision him playing shooting guard. But he is one of those young men who can do a lot of things for you.”
The only in-state signee in this class is Upchurch (6-7, 208, Garner). Upchurch will likely play the power forward position for N.C. A&T. Upchurch averaged 19.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game for the Garner Trojans last season. He is a two-time All-Greater Neuse River Class 4A Conference performer.
He was also named the 2008-09 Greater Neuse River Player of the Year, a second-team All-Triangle selection and earned a roster spot on the North Carolina East/West All-Star Game. Upchurch led the Trojans to an 18-10 overall record, a 13-1 conference record and a second round game in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs.
“I really like this young man,’’ said Eaves. “He’s got a great body and a great touch around the basket. He didn’t get to show it a lot in high school, but he can step out and hit a 15-foot jump shot. We’ll also let him bang in the post. He’s a young man who will block some shots for us.”
For the second straight year, the Aggies dipped into the deep talent pool at Bishop McNamara. A year ago, the Aggies signed point guard Marc Hill out of McNamara. This year Smith (6-5, 195, Bowie, Md.) will be the latest McNamara graduate headed to N.C. A&T.
Smith averaged 7.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game for the nationally-ranked program. He was named Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honorable mention. McNamara won 22 games last season, the most in school history. Smith had a 17-point performance against one of the best high school teams in the nation in St. Patrick’s. He also played in the prestigious Capital Classic.
“He comes from a winning program with loads of talent, so he didn’t average that many points in high school,’’ said Eaves. “I think people will be surprised at his offensive output on the collegiate level. He has a tremendous body, and he is strong enough to help me in the post right away.”
R.J. Buck (6-2, 175, Lusby, Md.) also played in the WCAC. He averaged 11.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game. WCAC honorable mention honors came his way last season at St. Mary’s Ryken. As a junior, he led his team in rebounding.
“R.J. is a tremendous athlete,’’ said Eaves. “He can take the ball between his legs in the air and dunk the ball. I can see him down the road being my defensive stopper. His length is really going to help me with my pressing style.”

Former Newton Conover basketball standout, Adrian Powell, has signed for a full division one scholorship at North Carolina A&T State University. The former 2008 CVAC Player of the Year played a post-graduate year at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, VA. The 6'6 wing averaged 14 ppg and 4 rpg under the leadership of coach Cedric Broadhurst. Powell played four years of Varsity basketball at Newton-Conover, coached by Steve Litton and David Ruteledge. He scored over 1,000 points in his high school career. Adrian's senior season averaged 17 ppg, 8 rpg which led to him earning CVAC player of the year, all Hickory Daily Record, and Third Team All Piedmont Region. Adrian Powell chose NC A&T over Alcorn State (Mississippi). NC A&T is coached by Jerry Eaves. They are members of the MEAC conference. Their schedule is highlighted with games against ACC's Miami University and SEC's Tennessee. Adrian is the son of Cathy Powell of Newton and the late Calvin Baker.

I was Adrian's assistant coach in HS. I'm also a friend of the family and a good judge of talent. I played D-2 basketball from 1997-2001 and have seen alot of players. Adrian is also first cousin's to former Clemson player Julious Powell who transferred to Lenior-Rhyne after a severe knee injury. I'm not expecting AP to be all MEAC next season, however I believe he can be productive as Freshman, and even more productive as he mature's through the years.

I think he's a very good addition to an above average recruiting class. I liked what I saw on film.

So cnixon79, are there any D1 prospects on your squad this year? We are probably gonna need a point and a 3 next year, and probably a 3 and a 4 the following year. If you can fill that order be sure to send it to oleschoolaggie and aahhbigboy for approval first. ;D
Welcome to the board, and if you decide you need thicker skin, I know a guy in Chattanooga that specializes in thin skin augmentation. It's a grueling process, but worth it to absorb some of the postings by pompous or dogmatic posters, yours truly included. But of course I’m always right.

Thanks for the Welcome. Which returning players will be productive next year. I'm curious about Robert Johnson. cnixon, i'll take a stab at it but keep in mind this is only my opinion. imo, i'd say johnson will be one of our top players this year. i think he's pretty versatile, one of our top returning scorers and rebounders. but i think our point guard, tavarus alston, will be the leader of the team. i think alston is very "underrated". he's our leading returning scorer and assist guy, but he's got to cut down on his turnovers. then you have the most gifted player on the team (in my opinion) in thomas coleman. the only problem is he's not playing up to his potential. yet, he's still a force defensively and a reliable scoring threat in the paint. "if" he ever decides to put in the hard work, he could carry the team on his back. then you have point guard marc hill who is a "true" point guard. his size hurts him but he's still very effective. he might even be the best "point guard" on the team. alston is a better overall guard because he can play both positions and is taller. but whenever size isn't a factor, i'd like to see hill at the 1 and alston at the 2. then there's shooting guard, dwane joshua. he was kinda streaky last year but he proved he's capable of scoring the basketball on any given night. playing d1 basketball for the first time as a juco transfer, he struggled at times. but now that he has a year of experience under his belt, i look for joshua to put up some big numbers this year. now, in my opinion, those are the top returning players this year. but that doesn't mean the rest of the role players won't have impact. most of them were freshmen last year (simpson, moorman, williams). the only freshman that got significant playing time last year was marc hill. so as you can see, its not unusual for a freshman to sit the pine for a year. unless you have major impact like marc hill last season and thomas coleman the year before, tell ya boy to get some new tweezers so he can pluck those splinders out of his butt for his first season. but if he works really hard and steps up his game, maybe he can get some significant minutes. anyway, that's my take on this year's returning players. now, i didn't mention shepherd and porter, but they could be keys to the team or even occasional starters. but neither, in my opinion, are highly skilled...
