So I’m in this Twitter Spaces talking about the HBCU Housing Crisis…and one of the track athletes at A&T said that a lot of the track athletes are going to the transfer portal because they didn’t have any housing for them. And this athlete is still on the team, and also doesn’t have housing.
So while some of the team is heading to Tennessee, all of them aren’t and housing appears to be the reason they are leaving as well…

Well…right now…this student-athlete currently doesn’t have housing…so if they get it first, you would think this individual wouldn’t be on a waiting list… That being said…the last I heard, there were 200 A&T upperclassmen without housing. Not sure how accurate that number is. Some HBCUs have bigger challenges regarding this. A&T probably should release another statement about their housing situation for the students.

Is the student athlete an athletic scholarship athlete or a kid with financial aid and/or academic scholarship? It makes a difference in guaranteed housing for athletes. And 2, The coach has to do an override in housing to make sure the athlete gets housing. Has Ross checked out already and thats why?

There are still track athletes that stay on campus? For various reasons I have met with track athletes and None ( of the 20) stayed on campus.

Housing always gets settled just before school starts. My wife called the housing office for what seemed like the whole month of July to get housing for my son. She was relentless. LOL

The students need to understand no college will house all their students except for really small private schools. I remember waiting in line at 0500 in the morning outside of Murphy to get housing as a sophomore. I listed to the show and one major issue is that the kids don’t understand how endowments and funding work. They believe donations from companies and individuals can be used to build housing vs knowing it’s earmarked for special interest. Additionally they believe the money is current use and that is not how endowments work…. And they listen to their peers that think they understand but really don’t.

That's where education comes into play. A student told me yesterday that A&T should've spent 1 million to build a dorm instead of switching conferences.....

I think the bottom line is that these students aren’t trying to take that type of risk. The rent prices are different with the pandemic. So I don’t think it’s realistic to compare the rental options that we had. And I was there trying to get their perspective adjusted a bit. But some of the other HBCUs might have bigger issues regarding housing than us.

Being on the T&F team or any team , that doesn't mean that you are on scholarship but just you made the track team . Also it is hard for me to believe that scholarship athletes one can't get housing and two are transferring because of it .

I didn’t say she was in the portal. I said she was still on the team and she said some of the players decided to go to the portal with the lack of housing being a factor.
