Are we ever going to name one, or are we just going to fall farther and farther behind in recruiting?

Are we ever going to name one, or are we just going to fall farther and farther behind in recruiting? Baseball coach? Baseball coach? You're talking bout baseball coach? Heck, Volleyball starts in the fall and there isn't a head valleyball coach other than the assistant as the interim. This will be the 3rd volleyball headcoach in a row that won't have much of a recruiting class in their first year. The bottom line is A&T doesn't have the money for these two sports, hence the "no-hires". And please, don't come with "they are taking their time to ensure they get it right". The athletic department simply doesn't have the money to bring the coaches on-board and/or find good coaches that will work with A&T's limited budget.

If that is the case, then they should just cut both programs. It is getting embarrassing. I do know that there are some quality applicants for the baseball job that can and would work within A&T's budget as a head coach. All they have to do is interview them.

I agree. There may be a problem hiring coaches that a willing to work within the given budget (budget figures which is completely unknown by me, so this is only an educated guess). I ran into the same problem (salary limitations) at FAMU with a 2008 hire.

How do we ever expect to get a quality baseball coach and a quality team when we pay less than $40,000 salary for a head baseball coach compared to $75,000 for an ASSISTANT football coach? And I know football is a "money" sport, but give me a break...a new skybox for over 4 mil when the football team only won 1 game last year and signed NO ONE on national signing day? At least the baseball team, on its meager budget and no field of its own, makes a decent showing each year. IF the school would actually get behind a new coach and the team, they could really make A&T proud.

I talked to Hilton yesterday and he indicated that they are down to 3 finalists that will be interviewed next week. An announcement will be made shortly after.

The Aggie Stadium pressbox is an excellent investment...and I am not sure if athletic funds were even used for it. With Aggie Baseball (and I'm a former Aggie baseball player under Coach Groomes), I don't know if the head coach's salary is as much of a problem as the operating budget for baseball is.

"aggie" - you claim you know 3 coaches that can do better than Shumate. Who are they and why don't you tell Hilton about them. I want to see how great they are.

I agree...but operating budget aside, it is difficult to recruit and retain a quality coach when it pays so little. I am surprised that Coach Shumate stayed as long as he did. Well, according to public record, the Head Baseball coaching job has paid about $38,000 in the past. This is even less than a K-12 public school teacher/coach. I think that is a huge problem. That is not even enough to live on, much less support a family.

If Hilton has any sense, knowledge, or cares about baseball at all, then he already knows about them...I know that one of them got a recommendation from the head coach at TCU...the same TCU that was in the World Series in 2010. They know a thing or two about baseball down there ;D

i'm under the "assumption" that the head baseball coach at a&t is a "part time job". its not a year round sport that requires full time attention throughout the year, at least not in my opinion. so if you have another gig while making $38k as a part time coach, that's not such a bad deal...
