How did New Bern manage to remain at 4A when most Eastern NC programs have dropped down to 3A and 2A? Kinston, Tarboro, & Goldsboro all have dropped down. All those towns you named have lost population over the last ten years. Goldsboro has been the most drastic. New Bern has grown but at a slow pace. Also Craven County hasn’t built any new high schools. That’s what happened to former 4A Jacksonville when some of its students moved to new Northside high. The fastest growing cities in the east are Wilmington (several 4A schools), Greenville which still has Rose (4A) and the outer banks towns (Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, etc.). New Bern isn’t growing fast enough to stay in 4A though. They dropped to low 4A for the first time. I think they will be 3A after the next 2 realignment cycles unless Craven County redraws their district. When New Bern comes to Hillside, I plan to be in the house. Looking at the brackets, I think Hillside will have a rematch with Dudley before that game.

I'm not so sure about New Bern dropping. If you drop NB then what does that say about Havelock and West Craven which are in the county also. Will they drop to 2A. As for growth, expect more folks to move to the area. With the military (Cherry Point) about to bring in more units (personnel) and job opportunities, I'd say we haven't seen nothing yet.
I might be wrong, I'm not sure if there's talk of building another high school in the area.

i kinda wish we (new bern high school) had been 4A instead of 4AA during all those years charlotte independence was dominating everybody. we had to play independence 3 state 4AA championships in a row and finally beat them the 3rd time. otherwise, i don't think any other 4A team could have stopped us from winning those other state championship games.
greenville rose (who is in our conference) won the 4A state championship multiple times during the independence dominance years while we kept making the state championship game only to face independence each time. it won't be easy, but we've got a good chance of winning another state championship this year...
