Porter gets the game ball even though Joshua and Alston each hit 23 points. Porter got a double-double and Alston got about half of his points off of screens set by Porter. Porter took up the slack when Coleman had to sit out due to foul trouble in the first and he able to go man-up against Norfolk State's 6'11" bigboy center.
Porter has improve greatly his hands and court awareness. He also used the backboard nicely on his inside shots. Porter to me is the strongest player on the team physically. It would be super nice if he had Coleman's agility and Coleman had Porter's strength.
This was a nice team win.

Though 3 ball kept us in the game, the half court sets is what won it in the end. This was a good win. There were some happy Aggies leaving Echols tonight.

Jazz / All
Based on Eaves radio comments after the game; he is extremely proud of Porter. Based on Porters performance I think they are going to dial his number more.
If we continue to develop a true post game with Coleman / Porter; there will be more balance in the off. Yea we shoot alot of 3's but I think part of that is a diversion tacktet by Coach Eaves.
I would suspect as the season goes own we will still jack up threes but more may come from Coleman or Porter kicking the ball out from the low post. That alone will create better spacing on the floor and opportunites for more off. reb.

Yep, Brandon was nervous about beating the team that didn't give him a shot. It looks like Eaves made the right choice.

www.ncataggies.com/Mensbasketball/2009-10%20ARTICLES/9aggiesvnsu.htmAGGIES WIN IN OVERTIME ON THE ROADNORFOLK, Va. – After senior guard Tavarus Alston missed a game-winning shot against Lamar last week, North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coach Jerry Eaves had one message for him. “We still believe in you.” The hope was that statement would help Alston believe himself. On Saturday night, it appeared the statement not only helped Alston, but it also helped the entire Aggies rotation. The Aggies put together a true team effort to rally from a 10-point second-half deficit to knock off conference foe Norfolk State 93-84 in overtime at Echols Hall. Several players, including Alston, hit key shots down the stretch to help the Aggies earn a valuable road win in the conference. Alston finished with 23 points and five assists. Dwane Joshua also had 23 points, while Nic Simpson added 17 points on 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. James Porter came off the bench to score 10 points, grab 10 rebounds and block two shots. He also took two charges. “I want all my young men to go out there, have fun and try to be the best player on the floor,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. “I want to instill that in them now because I think that’s what we’ve been missing in the (MEAC) tournament. I want 10 guys going out there believing they are the best 10 basketball players in the world. We need that to have the confidence to go out and win on a consistent basis.”Norfolk State took the lead at the 9:28 mark of the first half and did not surrender it again until Alston connected on a 15-footer to tie the game at 75 with 2:15 remaining. Dwane Joshua gave the Aggies the lead after a missed Alston 3-pointer resulted in a rebound by NSU’s James Williams. Williams turned the ball over seconds later, and Joshua capitalized with a runner in the lane for a 77-75 Aggies lead with 1:14 remaining in regulation. NSU’s Kyle O’Quinn tied the game at 77 in regulation off of his own miss and put-back. But by this time, it appeared the Aggies had captured the confidence Eaves was seeking. Robert Johnson opened the overtime by hitting two mid-range jump shots to give the Aggies an 81-77 lead. O’Quinn answered by knocking down his third 3-pointer of the game to move the Spartans to within one. After an Aggies miss, the Spartans had a chance to take the lead, but Rob Hampton missed two layups. Those two layups would turn the momentum in the Aggies favor. Joshua would miss a 3-pointer from the corner, but Thomas Coleman grabbed the offensive rebound, tossed the ball out to a wide open Alston for a 3-pointer that the Aggies an 84-80 lead with 2:44 remaining. On the Spartans next possession, Norfolk State’s Michael Deloatch dribbled the ball off his foot. Joshua got the steal, tossed it ahead to Alston who raced toward the basket. As Alston scored on the layup, Deloatch collided with Joshua as both men trailed the play. Deloatch was called for an intentional foul. Joshua hit one of two free throws to give the Aggies a commanding 87-80 lead with 2:03 remaining. “It was a huge call,’’ said Eaves. “Tavarus was clearly at the basket and (Deloatch) simply ran over Dwane. You need moments like that to help you win road games. I’m glad it went our way.” Things weren’t going the Aggies way midway through the second half. O’Quinn’s baseline jumper gave the Spartans a 65-55 lead. But a 7-0 run by N.C. A&T was capped off by a Marc Hill scoop shot over the 6-10 O’Quinn pulled the Aggies back into the game with 8:35 to play. “Any time you can get a road win in your first conference game against a team of Norfolk State’s caliber it’s huge,’’ said Eaves about a Norfolk State that was picked to finish third in the MEAC. “(The players) stayed with it. They didn’t give up on the system even though we weren’t hitting shots. I told them if they stuck with the system, things we would eventually start going our way.” The Aggies improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC. Norfolk State was led by O’Quinn who had 25 points. Deloatch added 20 and Hampton had 18 points and 20 rebounds for the 1-7 Spartans.

www.nsuspartans.com/news/2009/12/5/MBB_1205092011.aspxAggies Edge NSU Men 93-84 in OT Matt Michalec, SID Bookmark and Share 12/5/2009 11:16:33 PMNORFOLK, Va. — Dwane Joshua and Tavarus Alston scored 23 points apiece to help North Carolina A&T squeak out a 93-84 overtime win over Norfolk State on Saturday evening at Echols Hall in the MEAC opener for both teams. Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Spartans (1-7, 0-1 MEAC), who lost their sixth in a row. NSU led by 10 points at the midway mark of the second half. But the Aggies (4-5, 1-0) clawed back behind some timely buckets from Alston and Joshua and some sub-par free-throw shooting from the Spartans to force OT. Once in the extra stanza, A&& shot 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the floor while holding the Spartans to 20 percent (2-of-10) shooting. It was a battle of long-range shooting in the first half, with NSU getting the upper hand early. The Spartans, who hadn’t made more than seven 3-pointers in a game this season, canned seven treys in the first half alone. Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) hit three of those en route to 16 first-half points, and Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) dished out seven of his career-high 10 assists to help NSU claim a 41-37 lead going into the break. A&T managed six 3-pointers, but shot just 35.5 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. The third triple of the night by James Williams (Miramar, Fla.) and a long two-pointer by O’Quinn gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night at 65-55 with 9:55 left. But the Aggies crept back into it and finally forged a tie at 73-all on a jumper by Alston with 2:53 left. Tim Zephyr (Bronx, N.Y.) hit two foul shots at the other end to give NSU a 75-73 lead, but Alston again tied it with a jumper with 2:15 remaining. The Aggies took their first lead of the second half on a layup by Joshua with 1:14 remaining, but O’Quinn tied it at 77-all by sticking back Deloach’s missed jumper with 49 seconds left. Alston missed a shot at the other end, and the Spartans had a chance to win it in regulation. But Brandon Wheeless (Stone Mountain, Ga.) missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 10 seconds left. O’Quinn rebounded the miss and NSU called timeout with seven seconds left. But the Spartans could not get off another shot in the final seconds of regulation. Robert Johnson hit a pair of jump shots on A&T’s first two possessions of the extra session to give the Aggies the lead for good. O’Quinn hit his third and final 3-pointer of the night to bring NSU within 81-80, but that would be as close as the Spartans could get. A&T scored the next six points, on a 3-pointer by Alston and a three-point play by Joshua, to take a commanding 87-80 advantage with 2:03 left. The Spartans missed their next six shots after O’Quinn’s trey. Nic Simpson added 17 points, Johnson 12 and James Porter had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Aggies, who committed just nine turnovers. O’Quinn was 10-of-16 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range en route to his career high of 25 points. His 12 boards tied a career high and gave him his second double-double of the year. Deloach scored 20 points to go with his 10 assists and five rebounds. Hampton added 18 points, his seventh straight game in double figures, and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds of his own as the Spartans outrebounded A&T 51-46. Williams scored a season-high nine points on three 3-pointers. Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys (Bronx, N.Y.) grabbed a season-high seven rebounds for NSU. NSU has 10 days off for first-semester exams before playing at Jacksonville State on Dec. 15.

I went up to NSU. Whew...I'm running on fumes! Let me 'hit it and quit it.'
It was a good win. This game had that feeling that made me think"we are not shooting well, at times, but we are still in the game'.We made plays and hung around. They (NSU) were hot and making plays and rah rah rah, but we just felt like the better team. I dont know the turn over totals yet, but we did not throw the ball away. We got good looks for the 3ball, but they did not fall at times.D Joshua is a shooter. He got some good looks, missed some early shots, had an air ball ect. But then he came alive! Plus he drew a lot of fouls. Look...he will frustrate the faithful, but on the other hand, he will draw a foul on an old fashion 3pt play. He does not try to fade away for the most part, he jumps into the man, like a NBA vet. Here are some thoughts:
>Defense won this game. I saw Porter get hacked while missing a put-back, or something. Get up off of the floor, run down and block a shot after NSU passed the ball inside (thinking that they had a mis-match). I said OH shi!! And Coleman,is a beast! He had about 4 or 5! The overall team defense was good.
> NSU had some good big men. One had a nice 'outside'shot, like Ilgauskas.
>We will give the league fits.
>We did not play scared during OT. Rob made some big shots.
>The Aggie crowd pushed the team. (the Women's team were yelling)
>Porter!!! You know how his shots sort of roll off the rim? Well, he was making them. The ball would swing to his side and he would make a move! I know he has that 'pass first' vibe, but yo, the brother rolled to the basket.I dont know about the league teams, but most cant afford having their big man in foul trouble. Coleman got in trouble and we did well. Nic got in foul trouble also but had a nice game.
>Eaves had the guys running those high pick- sets, and they looked good. NSU was reeling from it.
>The NSU students were ready for A&T. They had some creative cheers & were hyped. Man,the last 2mins of the game was electric! Every play mattered.
>The Womens team is the truth!
>Marc Hill did not get his numbers, but played good defense. NSU's guards had to work all night.
This was a good win.

I was there too PJ. Don't know what the attendance was but that was a pretty decent crowd. I thought Porter showed a lot of heart. The only person who outworked him last night was white girl on Norfolk State's dance team.

Good win for Eaves. Just like I was saying last week, once we get into conference play, these type games will be wins.

yep, i was there too. it was a really good atmosphere. we aggies had a nice little crowd sitting right behind team's bench and especially during overtime, our crowd was hyped! my man pj was so loud, students from nsu's pep band section was screaming at him to be quiet! it was so funny because all that did was make pj get even louder and the aggie faithful joined right in with him!
man, its such a wonderful, wonderful, feeling to walk outta echols with a sweep! the men got a big standing ovation from the aggie faithful when they left the court after the game. and during the men's game, beatdowns unlimited had themselves a ball in the stands! they led some of the aggie cheers!
all i can say about the game is that we shot a whole lot of 3's and they didn't always fall. but in overtime, them 3's fell when we needed 'em the most! nsu's crowd was stunned! they led virtually the entire 2nd half and it didn't seem like we were gonna get over the hump. but the guys tightened up there "D" in overtime, made some clutch shots, and the rest is history...

I think he has improved his abilities and has confidence. watch out

it appears that eaves isn't as crazy of some people thought after all. looks like redshirting porter last year was a very good decision. i mean, the points he scored wasn't very pretty but he "earned" every single one of them! wasn't nothing cute about his points, he just outworked some muggs on the boards. blue collar is the best way to describe it. but i'm tellin' ya, dude can run the floor too!
i also seen coleman pass up an open shot from about 15 feet out to instead feed porter underneath for a strong 2! porter ain't gonna score double figures and rebounds every night, but his presence definitely will be felt. with coleman and porter both in the lineup, it gives us the size to matchup with almost any other mid-major...
