It was 4th down and 6.
How do you run a sprint draw or even a screen pass to the TE or RB on 4th and 6 when you are under center? The play-action fake component eliminates all that.
This played was destined to fail when Chris Young drew it up.

Eli only had 2 seconds to plant his feet and make a throw. It looked like he was trying to throw to the RB or saw that he was opened, but could not get it to him due to being tackled. This was his 2nd pass attempt of the game. From this video, I can't rule out that the play wasn't called to pass to RB. The RB was looking back at the QB at the 3 sec mark. Maybe it was a play that may have worked, but the blocking failed early causing Eli to spin to avoid the tackle thus losing eye contact with WR/TE/RB. The RB should have turned around sooner, but that could be on him not doing what he was taught or a failure by the coach on teaching details of rhythm or timing (when to look back).

Eli only had two seconds because he was under center and had to carry out a play-action fake that nobody on the defense fell for because of the down and distance.
By nature it takes more time to carry out a play-action fake and it only works when the defense believes you are running the ball.

True dat, but we still don't know if the call was to pass to the RB and not the WRs running fly pattern for a higher success rate. That blitz messed everything up.

Who lines up under center on that down and distance anyways? Even triple option teams line up in the gun in that situation more often than not, and then they just run a qb draw play. But it's the players and the other coaches' fault, not the OC.

Young is not showing any competence and putting EVERY QB at riak with nonsensical down and distance calls.

You can see that in the play the back got hung up just long enough by the rusher ( which was a good read by the defender to check the back and not just let the back run free off the fake ) . That was just a good defensive play by the defender .

Saabman, once again you are just saying random stuff without even looking at the video.
The RB does not even attempt to turn and become a receiver. There is nobody in a white jersey who even made contact with him. He is looking for somebody to block the entire time and he was unsuccessful.

Truth fully that was the right play to call under center or not . The fly routes are used to pull defenders away and if the Back or TE goes unchecked after the fake it's a quick and easy throw . Even then Eli could have made the throw or threw it away .The back was noly one in the area . Eli just panicked when all he had to do was put get the ball out instead of retreating.

Backs have a route after the fake , they don't go looking for someone to block but they do look for a route lanes. In play-action if the back is looking to block off the fake it's not play-action. What it did look like was a terrible execution of a screen in the back had trouble for whatever reason getting out there.

I'm going to regret saying this, but saabman is actually right. I dont know who was in the wrong or if it was by design, but the RB completely blew what he was suppose to do. He was suppose to take that playaction and keep heading into the flats and catch a short pass and run free for 15 yards. Problem is he hesitated after the play action, didn't recognize he would be free in the flats if he would have just floored it out there, and did nothing of usefulness. Eli then didn't have his expected outlet pass and had to eat it or throw it away. It was still a dumb play though because the defender was able to guard the RB and spy the QB at the same time. He did his job. Had there not been a go route but instead a hitch route on the outside he would have had a 3rd responsibility to cover that would have been open. Now some would blame the players, but I still blame the OC for them not executing that play crisply. How many times did you practice that? Why didn't the RB run it smoothly? I always go there first. regardless of that, I still dont like being under center or using playaction in the first place. He made simple complicated just by doing those 2 things.

forget everything I said above Thrilla, my bad. That was a dumb a$$ play call and design. Period, LOL. I looked at it again a little closer. The RB he playactioned to was not the one that should have been in the flats. He was in the middle still blocking. The up-back/fullback should have been in the flats but he was "blocking" a guy that wasn't even rushing, LOL. The LB was looking at him like "Dawg, are you going to do something or not? OK, I'll just stand here and make sure we dont miss a tackle", LOL

i hated the two plays before that play where we just handing the ball off. Are we just trying to run the clock out and decide to sneak a 3rd down pass?
