I agree but, don't forget in our case we needed a cultural change. So, this is his plan to change the culture within the program. So...I'm on the fence about the gpa. On one hand, I agree that it is too high but, on the other, he (coach) doesn't know how deep the discipline issue is so he's starting from scratch. I can see both sides, I just hope it doesn't hurt us from landing guys that can really help us moving forward. I can't sit here and say I wouldn't be proud if we won the CAA championship and our football team's gpa is 3.4. So....

And Taylor was a baller!!! Does anyone know if we had a decent walk-on tryout? What I mean by decent: Did we have a good group numbers wise?

Again, the 3.4 GPA requirement is only there to discourage a large number of walkons from trying out for the team (walkon tryout management). It is not a good indicator as to whether a player is more committed to football than a player with a 2.7 GPA. We have observed this many times at the high school level and it occurs at the college level in smaller moderation. A smart kid academically with a high GPA wants to tryout for a sport but quits after awhile due to it being too hard. A great football player with an average GPA drops a class that he thought he would like, but it was too hard or disliked the teacher.
Academic success or work ethics does not indicate athletic success or work ethics and vice-versa. Walkons have to endure a lot from coaches to prove to them they really want to be a part of the team. A high GPA just tells the coach he probably does not have to worry about you fluncking out of school or get on you about working with a tutor to keep up with your classes.

requiring a 3.4 gpa is an "awful" way of deterring try-outs. to me, simply trying to reduce the number of walk-ons by requiring a 3.4 is a "lazy" way of doing your job if that's the purpose. the coaches get "paid" to conduct tryouts.
to reduce walk-ons is not that difficult. ever heard of "cuts"? i find it hard to believe reducing walk-ons is the reason for requiring a 3.4 gpa. not only could it potentially run off positive contributors to the team, but it also could create a "divide" among the players if the entire team is not held to the same standard. i mean, why would anybody want to be a part of a team that does not treat everyone "equally"? other than some players being on scholarship, everything else should be the same for "all players".
it simply doesn't make sense to require walk-ons to maintain a 3.4 gpa but not the rest of the team. honestly, i swear, i do not understand that at all...

Having taught for 38 years and been around athletics longer, I am perplexed by 3.4 gpa as a condition for trying out and see no reason for it except to limit tryout numbers. "see no reason for it except to limit tryout numbers" Nailed It . Also Football like most scholarship Sports are not to be confused with extra curricular activities..i.e intramural sports . Personally I think that 3.4 gpa is directed at the walk-on gpa stipulation is for incoming freshman and anyone else that is considering walking on the team . I don't know how this will affect preferred walk on players ? Would they be put in a different category or held to the same gpa standard 🤔

Truth be told we don't have to have try outs at all. This a kind gesture besides it's not required

I agree. They should just not announce tryouts if they are gonna require a 3.4 gpa. You are not really trying to find a diamond in the rough.

Methinks if the coaches were aware of a Curtis Deloatch or Jeremy Taylor type walking around campus, that 3.4 requirement would be with a wink-wink. Much ado about not much imo.

I think Brown has the right to run his program like he wants to. Who knows if the same requirements will be there for next season. This could also be a decision based on what he thinks he already has.

It’s about having the GPA to walk on…I don’t think it’s expected to keep it that high… And making sure you have good grades should be like the first step when you’re going to an academic institution don’t you think? maybe i've been outta school too long, but has the scale changed? are we not on a 4.0 scale? do you have to have 3.4 to participate in extra-curricula activities at a&t? look, we all agree that academics is the top priority. but to expect every student to be "honor students" is ridiculous just like requiring walk-ons to be "honor students". football is an extra-curricula activity, not an "honor society". sure, it would be great if all football players had a 3.4 gpa, but that's no more reasonable than requiring a 3.4 to graduate. sorry, i don't agree with requiring a 3.4 gpa to walk-on as a football player, especially if its not required that the "entire team" maintain a 3.4 gpa. just doesn't make sense to me unless our grading scale changed from a 4.0 scale to a 5.0 scale. mind you, i'm a cum laude graduate, so i'm for academic achievement. but i don't feel that every student athlete that wants to try out for football must maintain a 3.4 gpa... OSA....i laughed when I saw you graduated with high honors....I graduated with "thank you laude" accolades.....
