The distinction between PWO and Walk-On is relevant in this case. Coach Brown, said the GPA requirement was for kids already on campus, attempting to join the team. It is not a requirement for incoming freshmen. So, Taylor would’ve been eligible regardless. FACT thanks Bluehaze . In some cases like this . Some times players lose there drive for the game for what ever reason and enroll as regular students. But then for want ever reason the drive is rekindled and they missed the game so they try out as a walk on for the team. I applaud Brown for having this requirement for students already enrolled that would like to be a part of the program. This will help the overall GPA of the team institution wise and graduation wise. But it will not help or even affect the APR because non scholarship athletes are not affected or counted under the APR guidelines. But it's a good look for the team and the institution.

It is not a requirement for incoming freshmen. So, Taylor would’ve been eligible regardless. I still don't like the 3.4 or 3.0 GPA requirement for targeting this specific group of walk-ons. A minimum of 2.7 or 2.5 maybe a decent cut-off. So incoming freshmen and transfer walk-ons get a pass while players that are performing above a C level "taking college courses", "who chose to attend A&T", and "who still have desire to play football" get discriminated against because they already attend A&T. Listen, if Coach Brown only seeks to up the team's GPA then add some students on the team with excellent GPA that love football and let them sit the bench. If he is looking for some walk-on players that can truly contribute on the field then he should bite the bullet and open it up to all at a more desirable GPA. I believe it is only a day tryout. If 2 or 3 players look very good in the tryout and they have GPAs ranging from 2.0 to 3.8, I am adding them all to the team, especially if they are better than some current players on the team. Maybe I will then have a talk with the non-performing scholarship player or walk-ons presently on the team to let them know if their grades are slipping, I saw their potential replacement today. My take is if one of your main solution in addressing low team GPA is targeting walk-ons then the program is in some trouble. Adding 2-3 players does not significantly increase a team of 85 to 100 players GPA.
