Yes QB was some what of a problem last year but to me it was more so the Defense. We have too get a better Rush up front. I just beleave that Defense win championships . The D let us down in a few games that we should have won so I'm more focused on the D-line and D-backs. We lost two good ones u no. First... I need to offer my condolences to you and your family... I missed that about your brother-in-law earlier. I'm with you on the 4th quarter defense. Despite the struggles of the offense, we lost to Morgan, Hampton and almost lost to FAMU because of things like having to go to 3-DL prevent defenses and not getting pressure. When I talked to Coach Washington prior to spring ball, he mentioned the very same thing, and that the pass rush would be a point of emphasis this year. Well.... based on what I saw in spring practice, we have improved a good bit in ability and depth, particularly at the DE spot. Angelo Keyes is listed at LB on the roster, but played pretty well at DE during the spring game. D'Anthony Ross didn't get much run as a true freshman last year, but he also looked good at the DE spot in the spring game. Both each got a sack in that game and looked a bit more physically imposing than what we're used to at DE, IMO. Going along with Daniel Pinnix (led the team with 7 sacks) and Malik Hampton-Prioleau coming back... I think we'll see more 4-man fronts in the 4th. The biggest difference-maker might end up being Marquis Ragland, who may be the best athlete on the entire DL. It sounds like he could line up at DT and possibly at DE, and wreak havoc from both spots. Our returning DTs were solid last year.... I am curious to see if Julian Cartwright, the all-state DT recruit from Georgia, will play as a true freshman or redshirt. Last year, the defense had 28 sacks, 11 INTs and recovered 10 fumbles. I suspect a good chunk of those numbers were in the 1st 3 quarters of our games. With D'Vonte Grant returning at LB... we have a really good shot at stepping up the pressure on defense this year. But you never know until the season starts... We'll see... indeed, as always, excellent stuff by durhamgsoaggie! i learned a lot about some guys that i didn't know very much about. also, we are extremely fortunate to have grant back for another year! hopefully he'll step his game up even more this season, because he may have a chance to play at the next level. 2 years ago, i remember getting all excited about mayhew getting an extra year to play only to see his production fall off that year. hopefully lightening won't strike twice in that regard for grant...

The big key on defense that we should watch intensely when camp starts in three weeks is experienced linebacker depth. We are fine are the starting spots and really solid at the outside backers. Where we might be shy depth wise is in the middle beyond Denzel Jones (5-10,240, R-So.) who is a little short but a very fast and physically overpowering game experienced run stopper.
We are going to depend a lot on promising freshman Joshua Patrick (6-1,230), a top flight D-1 prospect out of high school (DeKalb, Ga.), who came in from University of Memphis for spring ball and looked very good and 2-time All-State linebacker and Shrine Bowler Daishon Davis (6-0, 223, Fr., Belmont) but neither has yet to play an actual down of college ball. Also, three red shirt linebackers missed spring practice because of offseason surgeries but are expected to be ready next month.
How fast the younger players develop and staying away from early injuries will go a long way in keeping pressure off the DL especially in those first three critical games.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing the LB battles... that will definitely be good stuff... The only part I kind of disagree about is the notion of "taking pressure off the DL".... lol.... The only DLs who haven't seen game action are Keyes and Julian McKnight (who just graduated from HS). This current group at DL is probably the most physically gifted that Coach Broadway has had as a HC. And when you factor in Daniel Pinnix (DL), Michael Neal (DT) and James Morris (DT) as probable starters as juniors.... the DL actually has more combined experience than the LBs. Tyree Hearn was a loss at DE (led the team in QB hits with 9, had 2.5 sacks)... but you can make the argument that Bryan Houston's shoes will be much bigger to fill. So, really.... I expect to see an 8-man rotation on the DL that gets after it, forces double-teams to eat up OLs trying to get to the 2nd level and takes the pressure off the LBs.... as it should be...

It seemed like spring ball really helped us in tightening up the potential depth problems. I would love to see us score more offensively.

Did Denzel Keyes workout this spring? How did he look?

What about Suttles and Alberts….both played extensively as true freshmen? Are you projecting them to start?

I see them working more along the tackle gaps and flats especially when we go to more of a 50 look against run and dump teams like Coastal and SCSU because of their speed and straight up 4-3 or 4-4 sets against pass happy teams like Elon, Howard, and Hampton.

Any mention at the football luncheon about any MEAC games being moved to Thursday? I hope we keep our game vs. Hampton on Saturday.
