GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half, but the Lady Pirates’ comeback fell short Monday night at the Corbett Sports Center as North Carolina A&T escaped with an 82-81 win.
The Lady Aggies led 57-41 with 14:47 left in the second half after Tyronnica Alford hit a jumper. But the Lady Pirates (6-10, 2-3 MEAC) answered with an 18-5 run over the next five minutes, culminating with a jumper from Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) with 9:55 to play to pull Hampton within a 62-59 margin.
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) sank a jumper with 5:32 to play to bring Hampton within one, 72-71, and her free throw with 4:41 remaining tied the game at 75-75. North Carolina A&T went back up by three, 78-75, with 4:19 to play after Jaleesa Sams hit a jumper, before Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) tied the game again at 79-79 with 3:24 remaining on a layup.
Perry’s layup with 1:41 to play tied the game at 81-81, but Sams hit one of two free throws with 41 seconds left to push the game to its final margin.
Perry set a new career high with 31 points on 14-for-20 shooting to go along with 14 rebounds. It was the first time a Lady Pirate poured in 30 points in a game since Rachel Butler scored 36 against Brown on Dec. 3, 2005. Hill added 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, as the Lady Pirates shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor and 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the free throw line.
Sams led five Lady Aggies in double figures with 17 points, while Alford and Amber Calvin each added 16. Ta’Wuana Cook scored 12 points, while JaQuayla Berry poured in 11 points. Nikia Gorham led North Carolina A&T with nine rebounds as the Lady Aggies held a 48-36 rebounding edge.
The Lady Aggies shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor, though they turned the ball over 23 times. Hampton turned those miscues into 29 points.
North Carolina A&T opened the game on a 21-4 run that culminated with a layup from Crystal Murdaugh with 12:15 left in the first half. The Lady Pirates scored eight straight to answer, but the Lady Aggies held Hampton at bay in the first 20 minutes, going into the half with a 45-32 lead.
Perry led Hampton with 17 points and six rebounds in the first half, as the Lady Pirates shot 42.9 percent (12-for-28) from the floor. Calvin led North Carolina A&T with 11 points, while Alford added 10 points and Sams had seven rebounds. The Lady Aggies held a 26-15 rebounding edge in the first half, and North Carolina A&T shot 45.5 percent (15-for-33) from the floor.
