CSU Women's Basketball Selected Second in Great West Conference Preseason Poll Corey Miggins, Sports Information Director 11/3/2009 7:38:16 PM
CHICAGO – Chicago State women’s basketball was selected to finish second in the inaugural Great West Conference preseason poll by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches that was released this morning by the conference office.
The Cougars recorded 40 points and captured a pair of first-place votes in the poll in addition to having five players capture preseason all-conference honors. First-team honors went to senior guard Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and junior forward Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.), while junior center Caila Desroches (Long Island, N.Y.) captured second-team accolades. Junior forward Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn.) and junior center Elana Wroten (Chicago, Ill.) captured honorable mention recognition.
North Dakota was the conference’s pick to win conference title based on earning 42 points and two first-place votes followed by CSU and Utah Valley, who also received 40 points and two first-place votes. South Dakota was picked fourth with 28 points and a first-place vote, Texas-Pan American was picked fifth with 17 points, Houston Baptist was selected sixth with 16 points and NJIT garnered seventh with 13 points.
Alyssa Waldon recorded averages of 11.9 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 41 percent from three point range despite missing the final 13 games of the 2008-09 season due to injury. This is the first preseason honor for Waldon and the second overall in her career as she was named Honorable Mention All-Independent following her sophomore season in 2007-08.
Courtney Waldon enjoyed a good sophomore campaign last year as she averaged 10.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per contest en route to claiming All-Tournament team honors at the National Independent Tournament and earned Honorable Mention All-Independent accolades for the second straight season. Waldon also received Winter-Spring Academic All-Great West honors for her performance in the classroom.
Desroches is currently in her first season with CSU after playing two seasons at Monroe Community College in New York, where she averaged 18 points and 15 rebounds as a sophomore while helping the Lady Tribunes reach the NJCAA Division I Tournament. She was a New York Tri-State McDonalds All-America nominee as a senior at Elwood-John Glenn High School in 2006.
Beckel enters her first year as a Cougar after sitting out the 2008-09 season following a transfer from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was named a McDonald’s All-American following her senior season at Waseca (Minn.) High School after posting averages of 15 points and eight rebounds.
Wroten had a breakout sophomore season last year for the Cougars as she averaged 7.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while claiming Honorable Mention All-Independent recognition and set a new career scoring high with 20 points at Akron.
The Cougars kick off the 2009-10 season on Nov. 13 with a Preseason WNIT first round game at Bowling Green with the start time set for 5:30 p.m., central time.

CHICAGO (Nov. 14, 2009) – The Chicago State women’s basketball team opened 2009-10 season in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a 76-41 first round defeat at the hands of host Bowling Green Friday at Anderson Arena.
The contest marked the first time the Cougars have competed in the prestigious national tournament and are the first Great West Conference school to be invited to play.
Sophomore Jael Peña (Harlem, N.Y.) gave CSU an early 4-0 advantage in the game’s opening two minutes with back-to-back layups. The visitors would increase their lead to 7-3 on a three-pointer by junior Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.) at the 17:43 mark. BGSU would respond with a 34-9 scoring run for the remainder of the half to head into intermission with a 37-16 lead. Senior Tamika Nurse tallied 16 points and junior Lauren Prochaska scored 10 points during the run for the home team.
Waldon and Peña each recorded layups in the first couple of minutes into the second half to pull the Cougars within 37-20 with 18:22 left in the game, but the Falcons managed to outscore CSU by a 39-18 margin during a 17-minute span to take its biggest lead of the game at 76-38 that concluded with a layup by sophomore Jessica Slagle. Waldon connected on a three at the 18-second mark for the final margin.
Waldon paced Chicago State with 15 points and tied for game-high honors with six rebounds. Peña added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, while senior Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.) posted four assists and three steals for the Cougars.
Nurse tallied a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field to lead four Bowling Green players in double figures. Prochaska added 13 points, six caroms and five assists on the evening while junior Jen Uhl scored 11 points and junior Tracy Pontius added 10 points.

This will also be an early homecoming for Nikia Gorham and Tierra Thomas.

Will the injuries and players being out affect A&T? Or is their bench deep enough to go the distance?

Will the injuries and players being out affect A&T? Or is their bench deep enough to go the distance? No excuses. We've got enough talent to win this game.

Since people think they can read my mind these days, I just want to start off by telling you that I'm not coming at you, Bibbs, the ladies, Eaves, or our alma mater in any way. I'm not infering anything nor being sarcastic either. Just wanted to ask......have you seen the ladies play this year? That's a big statement you made and I'm just wanting to know if you thought this was going to be one of the most special teams ever for A&T.

This game on Friday is a huge one. If we can win it, it will ensure that we don't finish last in the tournament and would make us one of the favorites to take the consolation bracket. It will also give our new girls confidence that they can beat other mid majors outside the MEAC.
We really need our alumni in the area to come out and give Beatdowns Unlimited a home court advantage in Baltimore.
