TOWSON, Md. - A strong second half comeback including 15 second half points by Shanae Baker-Brice led the Tigers to a 56-46 win over Winthrop on Friday evening in Preseason WNIT consolation round play. Baker-Brice was one of three Tigers (1-1) to score in double figures in the victory.
"I thought it was a great effort by the offense in the second half," said Coach Joe Mathews. "Defensively it was better tonight but we still have work to do to get where we want to be."
The Tigers found themselves down 23-18 at the start of the second period. The Tigers and Eagles (1-2) would trade baskets to start the second half with a TaQuoia Hammick lay-up at 16:26 giving the visitors a 28-22 lead. The two teams continued to trade buckets before a Baker-Brice three-pointer at 11:08 gave the Tigers their first lead since early in the first half. A foul on Winthrop following the basket gave the Tigers the ball back and Baker-Brice responded by hitting a jumper to put Towson up 37-34 with 10:56 to play. Simona Petronyte hit a trey at 9:19 to give Towson a 42-36 advantage. After a Winthrop jumper made it a 42-38 game, Towson went on a 9-0 run to take a 51-38 advantage with 3:54 to go. The Tiger lead would not fall below nine the rest of the way as Towson posted its first win of the year.
The first half saw a tight battle as there were four ties on the scoreboard in the first 12 minutes of the game. With the score tied at 11-11, Winthrop went on a 10-2 run to take a 21-13 lead with 4:21 to play in the half. That run was highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from the Eagles' Jessica Fansler. The Tigers would respond by scoring five of the final seven points in the half and went into the break trailing by five.
Baker-Brice finished the game with 20 points, her second straight 20+ point performance of the year. She would also add four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Omara Parker and Charmonique Watt each connected for 10 points in the contest. Parker would add four rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal. Watt contributed three rebounds and three steals. Haliena Snowden and Kandace Davis led the Tigers on the boards with seven apiece. Davis would add eight points and two steals.
Fansler led Winthrop with 11 points while Shanice Cole contributed 14 rebounds. Mary Hathaway would add 10 points in the game.
The Tigers wrap up Preseason WNIT play when they host day two of the consolation bracket. Towson will face North Carolina A&T, who was a 62-57 winner over Chicago State at 7:30 p.m. Winthrop will face Chicago State at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
