Probably because Small and Houser were doing the recruiting then. I am willing to bet that his highlight tape is stored in a box somewhere in Housers' apartment, still un-opened.

Does anybody know if we even recruited him or what he did in high school?

I don't see how you can ever lose a NC kid to a school located in Baltimore. During my recruiting visit I would just show him and his family an episode of The Wire and be like, "Now really, do you want to spend the next four years in that kind of hell hole? Marlo gone kill yo azz and dump your body in an abandoned building."

Maybe the kid wanted to leave the area. A lot of local kids want to get away from home...

That's what I was thinking. But I was still wondering his background. He might've been deemed not worth recruiting.
I actually ended up going house hunting around Morgan while we were getting our a$$ kicked in Norfolk. It's not a bad area.

Maybe the kid wanted to leave the area. A lot of local kids want to get away from home... I have to add to this, because I talk with A LOT of local(RTP, Greesnboro, Fayetteville Area)high school football and basketball players. They consider A&T a last resort. I always ask them why because I dont understand why you wouldn't want to play for A&T versus the other NC schools(excluding Div I). Its an HBCU, We have a nicer facilities than most DIV IAA, DIV II schools. The crowds are larger than most schools in DIV IAA and DIV II crowds. The fans travel. Campus is more of the "Bomb" than when I went in 93. We got the jumbotron and fieldhouse. Yo momma can watch you on the internet if she cant make the game. Crowd is always hype(until we start getting smashed). Not to mention that most alumni have nice/decent jobs. So what's the problem!? They always say the same thing. "I didn't know all that." Whos fault is that? Recruiting in my opinion.

If they took a visit or requested one of those free cd-roms they know all that. They might be saying that because they don't want to admit they just don't want to go to A&T.

Not a bad area If you are talking about not finding a body in your driveway once a year it is OK but there is no service in the immediate area. You have to drive across the city or go to Towson which is closer to find decent shops and restaurants. That's what I was thinking. But I was still wondering his background. He might've been deemed not worth recruiting. I actually ended up going house hunting around Morgan while we were getting our a$$ kicked in Norfolk. It's not a bad area.

Seriously. I've got several friends from A&T and Winston who live within four blocks of the campus. They all said the neighborhoods have strong community bonds. Plus, they don't have driveways so you don't have to worry about finding a dead body in a driveway. A ten minute drive from Loyola of Baltimore, 15 minutes from the inner harbor. Every time you put a bunch of black folks in one area it's not long before the bad reps follow.
Maybe that's why we can't convince kids to come to A&T.
Technically you have to drive across the city of Greensboro to get to decent shops and restaurants.

Thats not an excuse at all in my opinion. Almost every HBCU is surrounded by bad areas. At least A&T did a good job at buying up the stuff that was in the middle of campus 10 years ago.
You might be right Dooms. They might not just want to go. Another thing I noticed is that A&T never contacts these kids I'm talking about. They go somewhere else and are very productive. Is there an insider here that know how A&T gets their prospect list?

Well if they're not being contacted that's a problem. A&T would be last on my list too if I was last on ours.
I've heard a lot that Small and co. didn't follow up leads. My personal experience was that they were very willing to investigate leads. At least they quickly followed up on the two I gave them.
Perhaps the recruiting money dries up before they can recruit some of these kids. It sounds crazy at first (how much could it cost to send a kid a cd-rom and call him) but this is the same school that couldn't get the old basketball coach game film because the fed ex bill was unpaid. Every penny counts. Even Hampton supposedly had the same minor bill problems.
Even though the recruiting budget is supposed to increase over the next few years we still might have the same problem if we insist on this 63 full ride only recruiting strategy. If all the scholarships are gone then we'll still lose kids that could've done well.
It just goes to show we have these ideas about what our coaches should be doing but there's so much behind the scenes stuff that keeps them from doing it.

Its just strange to me that these kids that I talk to and see play dont even be on A&Ts radar. They look better than half the kids we got or bring in. I know grades play a factor and all, but these kids end up going to Elon, Catawba, Winston, Fayetteville State, and Central. One poster said that they just want to get away from home. These schools are no more away from home than going to A&T. Elon's roster is full of RTP, GSO area kids. Ditto for Winston. Secure your local kids. We got the facilities and campus. Stick them in front of it.
I'm just venting. This year(along with last) is ruff.

Wesley McMahandHere's another kid Small passed on. Hell he wouldn't even return his dad's call! Now as a rs freshman he's leading a not so good Army team in rushing at 5.0 yards per carry. The irony is that he only considered A&T because of his dad's relationship with Bill Hayes and even though Hayes was gone he still recommended A&T! He had a shot at a top running back that was a straight A student and he wouldn't even give him a look.
