I remember you talking that kid up. I guess Small figured he had enough backs and he kinda did (Richardson, Ferguson, McNair, Truesdale, I'm sure I'm missing a couple). You know the kid wouldn't be averaging no 5.0 on our team. 0.5 maybe.
But to not return calls is preposterous. Especially when the kid could've gotten an academic scholarship and cost next to nothing to recruit.

Mario Melton came out of High Point Andrews the same year as Chaz Truesdale was all-state , Was told by Small they did not need another QB. So he went to Morgan. He was the fasted on the team at 4.4 , made all-state, and was in the East West game Remember Chaz Truesdale had to walk-on. He was brought over to A&T by Derick Anderson coach of Andrews an Alumni of A&T

That was my point. When I heard Small whining about his small recruiting budget this immediately came to mind.

This thread is creating an even more dreadful picture of Small's recruiting techniques. No wonder Fobbs has "nothing" to work with.

Monster, I went through Norfolk State program this past Sunday and I noticed that NSU had 40 local signees out of 81 players. When I say local in the Norfolk area I am talking about a 25 mile radius. Don't get me wrong, the Norfolk area is much stronger in numbers and quality of recruits. I asked my friend in Greensboro, a football watcher and fellow Aggie about the Greensboro area and he said the area is not as strong in recent years and definitely not in the league of the Tidewater area in VA. There are also miscommunication problems and high school coaches not dealing with HBCUs unless there is a personal relationship or the kid is not that good. I am not quick to say A&T did not recruit someone. I know of cases with my former high school where inquiries from A&T about players are left unanswered from the high school coach and the kid and his parents know nothing about it. I was involved in one incident in Small's first year after the national recruit signing. The kid got left out in the cold and A&T had tried to get in contact with him prior to the big signing date. By the time I could get the two sides together it was too late. A&T did not have a full grant-in-aid left for the coming school year. Its just strange to me that these kids that I talk to and see play dont even be on A&Ts radar. They look better than half the kids we got or bring in. I know grades play a factor and all, but these kids end up going to Elon, Catawba, Winston, Fayetteville State, and Central. One poster said that they just want to get away from home. These schools are no more away from home than going to A&T. Elon's roster is full of RTP, GSO area kids. Ditto for Winston. Secure your local kids. We got the facilities and campus. Stick them in front of it. I'm just venting. This year(along with last) is ruff.

He was brought over to A&T by Derick Anderson coach of Andrews an Alumni of A&T I'm sure the kid was looking for a scholarship and seeing as though there were three on scholarship at the time, the message probably was that there was no scholarship available for another QB at this time. And it's funny how 4.4's change to 4.8's and 4.9's when they get to a college campus... Just an opinion...

You got that right. I don't think any runing back on our team right now runs below a 4.7. Just check the reports for the annual NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis every year and you'll see how hard it is to find a player who runs a legit 4.3 or 4.4.

Tell me about it. I "ran" a 4.5 in ninth grade (yeah right) and I was 5'8" and 165 lbs. In actuality I ran a 4-ever and I was 5'5 and a half and 155 1bs.
Coaches learn the art of fudging at an early age.
Melton did manage to run for a 70 yard td on a qb draw against Cookman. You know those guys are legit 4.4 guys so maybe Melton's in the 4.6 range.
In hindsight I'd have found a scholly for the kid seeing that we didn't have any underclassmen at the position.
What weirds me out is I never heard any mention of this kid before. We usually get the scoop on the local talent on this site, especially at qb considering our woes at the position. Whaddup?

I seem to remember Exterminator mentioning that this kid Melton was interested in A&T back when he was being recruited. I do remember when he signed with Morgan.

Melton time was legit , he also was a track star he came third in the State his Jr. year. did not run track his Sr. year In defense of Small he may have thought he did not need a QB at that time . He had three, QB from Bertie and the two Sr. from last year, and won the MEAC that year

He also had the kid from Richmond County coming in.
But guess what, Melton could've (and should've) been recruited anyway. Why? Because with that speed we could use him somewhere. We could've done just like the big boys and promised him a chance to compete for the qb position.
We brought in Herb Miller and Marcus Hammond not necessarily to play qb but to play somewhere. Why not Melton? He seems to be an athlete, which is something we're lacking.

On the athlete tip, we might have signed him to a b-ball scholarship and play both sports; he was 1st team all county in basketball and football.
If nothing else, you sign him and keep him away from conference opponents; so much for that idea. The inquirer will write stories about Melton "coming home" to vanquish the local team that didn't want him like that Sanders kid from Howard that played high school ball at NE Guilford High. Melton will throw for 300 yds against us on Saturday and in the post-game interview he'll talk about how he got revenge over us.

Trust me, he won't throw for 300. He might run for 100.

He might do both.
