below is in the updated N&R article on UNCG's basketball schedule:
"Notably absent from UNCG's non-conference schedule: a game against crosstown rival N.C. A&T, or against either of the state's top-drawing ACC teams, North Carolina or Duke.
"In our original plans, we set out to play Duke at least once and Carolina at least once in the first five years," Johnson said. "I believe we'll see at least one of those come to fruition in year two."
Johnson said A&T had other contractual obligations with scheduling for this season, but that the rivalry would be renewed "hopefully in year two."
Those two games — an A&T and a Duke-or-Carolina matchup — were included on the best-, probable- and worst-case scenario financial models developed last fall, before UNCG and the coliseum drafted a four-year contract in November to move the school's home games away from on-campus Fleming Gym.
But none of those three models — which range from a $60,412 loss to a $317,570 profit — figured in four "second-tier" ACC games. Johnson said the coliseum hoped to get two ACC games, and four in the first year was an unexpected bonus."

Until last year, A&T tried to get a home-and-game contract with UNCG and UNCG refused to even discussed it. A&T and wouldn't even return calls to A&T about a home-and-home. Now UNCG are blowing up A&T's phone trying to get a game because it beneficial only to them. UNCG only wants to play A&T in the Coliseum and are still refusing a home-and-home contract. UNCG does not want to come to Corbett, just like their baseball team refuse to play the Aggies in War Memorial.
I say forget them but I predict pressure is going to come to try and make A&T play UNCG in the Greensboro Coliseum.

I am very supportive of UNCG's move to the GC next year, but if they aren't willing to come to the Dawg Pound every other year then we shouldn't agree to play them.
That is nothing less than disrespect.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the benefit for either school from UNCG and A&T playing a home-and-home series at Corbett and Fleming?

I don't mind playing at the GC (or anywhere for that matter) when UNCG has the home game. But UNCG should be willing to come to Corbett every other year. That is only fair.
A UNCG matchup in the Dawg Pound would be a highlight on our home schedule and would help us sell more season tickets. Just like playing A&T in the GC would allow UNCG to sell more tickets.

What kind of crowds do you guys normally draw at Corbett?

Depends on the opponent and the day of the week.
Our weekend games against WSSU always sell out with over 5500 fans in attendance.

I would think it would be similar to the draw UNCG would enjoy by playing A&T in the GC.
If we marketed the game right (that's the key) and had the game on a weekend night (not afternoon), I'm sure the contest could at least draw 4000 fans.

Thrilla ... I'm still shocked that no one with the coliseum has seen the writing on the wall and put some kind of doubleheader together matching up A&T and G against other area teams. Judging by the numbers they brought to Fleming every year, an App State-A&T would put +12k in the coliseum.

Dash, I still hope to one day see a "Titans of the Triad" tournament featuring UNCG, High Point U, A&T and WSSU.
That event would be tremendous.

Guys, A&T tried to do just that a few years ago with games being played in the Coliseum like a holiday tournament. None of the other area schools would bite, not Elon, not High Point and not UNCG.

The article referenced above is slightly incorrect (I'll fix it) ... ... b/c UNCG is playing at Duke this year. I don't know if the change in leadership at both of our universities might not change some of the issues that have plagued our series. I think that one of the drawbacks for G is how a game @ A&T is looked at by the RPI. It would be viewed as semi-home for G instead of road. I believe that this is much of the reason that teams in Philly play each other at the Palestra (sp?). Maybe I'm off base with that point. Maybe it should be a moot point b/c neither team would threaten for an at-large bid. But two years ago App State (SoCon) was one of the last 6 teams left out of the NCAA's, and if G (in 2008) was 10 spots higher in the RPI we would've went to the CBI. So, that is something that needs to be planned for. Either way, I'm assuming the UNCG will make some kind of concessions to A&T that will make it worth it to start playing this series again. If it's playing a game at Corbett, they might agree to it. Guess we'll have to see.

Someone told me the same thing last year. Oh well. I think there's real money to be made with the idea. Honestly with your larger fan base, making full-time move to the GC would have been a more logical move for A&T then UNCG.
