Witter to attend N. Carolina A&T 6-foot-8 cager faces big transition Thursday, April 16, 2009 BY KEVIN MALONEY Special to the TimesWhen West Windsor-Plainsboro South boys basketball coach Bob Schurtz first encountered Austin Witter, he knew the then 6-foot-1 lanky freshman had the potential to be good. "You saw the talent and saw how athletic he was," Schurtz recalled. "He could handle the ball a little, shoot the ball a little and, as you saw him develop and continue to grow, you saw the potential was endless." This is great news!! After reading the article, he could be a great player for Coach Eaves.. He's a great Shot Blocker also What are you talking about? I know, I know, some of you are already rolling your eyes, but just read this excerpt from the article and then answer the following questions. Here's the excerpt......... He totaled 184 blocks (6.6 bpg.), 327 rebounds (11.6 rpg.) and averaged just under four assists per game.
Witter will make the transition to either the shooting guard or small forward spot at the next level, which is a much better fit for his skill set. Still, there's a lot of work to do to make that transition a smooth one.
"Basically I need to work on ballhandling and make the transition into the shooting guard, small forward positions," he said. "He (head coach Jerry Eaves) knows I can shoot, he just wants to make sure I can defend at the next level." Questions: 1. What 6'1" player do you know that averages over 6 blocks and 12 rebounds a game? ?? Clear indicaiton that this guy played against NO ONE. 2. Would Bozeman bring in a 6'1" guard that needed to work on his ballhandling? It takes a lifetime to acquire good enough ballhandling to play D-1. 3. What is the philosophy behind signing someone "to make sure he can defend at the next level" ?? You're wasting scholarships on 6'1" projects? You do that with 7-footers. C'mon people, I can't be going overboard with this one.

This is the best recruit I've seen Eaves get. Great Job! Naw, I think Coleman and Ed Jones have been his highest rated recruits thus far. For Witter to have those type of numbers and only have a few lower D-I schools recruit him might be a better indication of his abilities.

Yeah, I totally misread that article. Airball. I'm not really anti-Eaves or I would be calling for his job. I do, however, have major doubt about just about everthing he does. Kinda the same way I'm optimistic about everything Bibbs and staff does. But I was dead wrong on this one. I knew that couldn't have been the case though, but what's crazy is how I really wouldn't have put it past him if I was right! So maybe you're right about that too, I may not have any objectivity when it comes to him. lol At worst, I just balance everything out up here.

I will say this though, 6'8" and athletic sounds great for the helter skelter style Eaves likes. Now that I know he's 6'8", I'm not so skeptical. We'll have to see though, it can't be but so good.

I could give a rat azz about what Bozman would do. He is NOT our coach! EAVES is! Why not? He showed everyone how to win the MEAC and dominate the league in 2-3 years. All successful people/companies care about what their competitors are doing. Thanks for letting us know you weren't in Merritt. And you should love when I'm wrong, I say what you don't like and I right most of the time. lol Enjoy.

Remember L.J. Pipkin back in the day when Warren Reynolds was coaching here. Same kind of player - a tall skinny kid who could handle the ball and shoot the outside shot or take you in low because of his quickness off the floor. He won't outmuscle you but will finish off the break and give the opponents real matchup problems in the backcourt defensively.

i’m a little skeptical of witter. basically i’ll have to wait and see this kid before i can pass judgement, but unless he plays in a very competitive league, i’m not exceedingly impressed with his numbers considering he’s 6’8”. my “best guess” is that he’s a rob johnson type (in terms of skills), except taller.
he got offers from two respectable d1 programs in rhode island and siena which tells me he’s probably a pretty decent player that should help our program. but i’m not convinced he’ll be an all-meac caliber player. to me, all-meac caliber players are what we need to seriously challenge for an meac championship. he must have a pretty decent handle if eaves plans to use him as a guard. he’ll be a very big guard if he does but most likely he’ll be a small forward (if not a power forward). my gut tells me eaves sold him on the guard thing just to get him to commit…
