Austin Witter headed to North Carolina A&T
By The Trentonian
Austin Witter filled gyms around the Colonial Valley Conference the past season as his scoring, rebounding and shot-blocking prowess made him the most dominating player in Mercer County.
It quickly became evident that the 6-foot-8 forward/center had the tools to play at the next level. For the past month there was plenty of speculation about where the next level would be for the West Windsor-Plainsboro South senior.
Yesterday The Trentonian CVC Player of the Year ended all the speculation when he signed a letter of intent to play at North Carolina A&T University.
Witter became the biggest triple-threat in CVC history as he averaged 14.9 points, 11.6 rebunds and 6.6 blocks for a 24-4 WW-P South team that won the CVC Colonial Division title and the Central Jersey Group IV crown before being ousted from the state playoffs by eventual Group IV state champ Lenape.
Witter, whose step-father Greg Grant is a Mercer County hoops legend after playing six seasons in the NBA and leading Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) to the NCAA Division III national final 20 years ago, picked A&T over Siena and Quinnipiac, who also showed recruiting interest. They had told Witter to spend a post-grad season in prep school.
Witter told NJ Hoops he and his family were sold on the Greensboro, N.C. school after their visit last month to the school that plays in the MEAC.
Scouts who had watched Witter marveled at his incredible wing span, which along with his quick feet allowed him to go up to reject shot after shot, then go a little higher for the rebound.
Last season the Aggies finished 16-15 and in a 4-way tie for third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), bvut lost in the first round of the playoffs. They graduate five starters, so Witter should get a chance to contribute quickly.
