News and Record Editorial 7/17/2008
Sidney Lowe II is an extraordinarily fortunate young man.
Someone else almost certainly would have drawn hard prison time for the serious crimes committed in Greensboro last year. But Lowe's father is N.C. State basketball coach Sidney Lowe, a beloved figure for his role in the Wolfpack's magical 1983 national championship and a man who could hire top defense attorneys.
The elder Lowe was in Guilford County Superior Court Tuesday as his son appealed to Judge Henry Frye Jr. for leniency. Lowe II said he's overcome the drug habit that prompted his participation in armed robberies. He said he'd never been in trouble before - not true - and promised to make the most of another chance.
"I just hope you can put your trust in me, that I won't disappoint you. I can be somebody great. I will be somebody great," he vowed.
Frye responded by sentencing Lowe to 15 months at the minimum-security Guilford County prison farm, an astonishing break that can only be attributed to Lowe's family connections.
But perhaps the judge saw more in those family connections than a famous father. He saw a father who was standing behind his son, and other family members who were there to support a young man who needed them.
Not every defendant can count on those advantages. With his family in his corner, Lowe II may have a better chance than most to overcome his mistakes and forge a better life. If he does, the next 10 or 20 years can be better spent outside prison.
Frye's decision is still open to question. Lowe II was 21, not a teenager, when he committed dangerous crimes. He'd been through a drug-education program after he was charged in 2004 with possession of marijuana. And relatives blamed the environment at N.C. A&T, where Lowe II was a student, for his troubled behavior - scapegoating that Frye should have rejected.
After his 15 months of easy time, Lowe II will have another chance to prove himself. If he fails, his luck will run out, family or not.

Judge Frye should have sentenced that non-coaching, moon head, degree buying, "sonovabiscuit eater", low class, red coat bama wearing, no-excuse-for-father to jail for contempt for saying something that stupid.

that's a bold slap in the face. using lowe's logic, you'd expect 11,000 more aggie students to commit armed robbery…

For that comment I hope he fails and fails miserably at NC State over the next 3 years. Not that he wont land on his feet anyway because once you have a name, any kind of name, someone will give you a job as a coach.
His stupid a$$ family act like aint no one that went to NC State ever robbed nobody.
Next time i see him in Raleigh I'm going to let my coffee spill on his red "whatever" he got on. "My bad brah. Have a nice day. Aggie Pride!"

To be fair, the article said "relatives said" not that Lowe himself said.

To be fair, the article said "relatives said" not that Lowe himself said. They aint cut Obama no slack for Wright and they aint even related. I aint cutting him any for his relatives.

To me one doesn't really have anything to do with the other. By that same thinking, somebody could paint you as a drug addicted thug because you went to A&T and so did Lowe.
Just a thought....

To be fair, the article said "relatives said" not that Lowe himself said. Moonpie Sidney quotes from Raleigh's News and Observer The elder Lowe said he was not happy with his son's decision to leave home for A&T.
"I didn't think he was ready for that environment," the father said. "He's quiet, he's shy, he's vulnerable. I worried about him. We kept contact ... but you could see changes starting to occur."Most likely it was just being away from home to attend college. The Lowes were just like a lot of parents who finds out their child has changed, even the ones who have children at NC State. Sidney is another one of those clowning Negroes who think because he is ghetto everyone else who is black is ghetto and immoral. He didn't attend A&T and only came to party in Greensboro when he wasn't playing basketball. Then he turns around and buys a degree from a small private HBCU, St Paul College, so he can get the coaching job at NC State.

thanks jazz for posting his explicit comments. it looks to me he is speaking "specifically" of a&t, not just being at any college away from home.
but i'm not gonna hate on lowe for that one comment alone, though it does offend me. i don't think his intentions were to offend a&t, at least i hope not. when you're in a situation like he and his son is, you're emotional, hurt, angry, disappointed, embarrassed, nervous, afraid, and all of the above. i'll give him a pass this time...

I don't buy the Lowe's excuses and never will as more than enough upstanding black men have made it at A&T...good riddance to the Lowes and their excuses!

N&R always finds a way to drag us down. Wasn't Jr. at UNCG buying drugs? The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. What's Lowe's Sr excuse for not graduating from NC State? Was that the wrong environment.

Excuses, excuses. If A&T is so bad, what's with the kid who, attend UNCG, that was the victim? Wasn't he beat down by lowe, jr. for a bad drug deal? What does that say about UNCG's environment? Also, wasn't lowe, jr in trouble before he enrolled at A&T? Quote: "He'd been through a drug-education program after he was charged in 2004 with possession of marijuana."

My wife is a head of diagnoistics at Polk Correctional. Polk only takes 19-25 year olds. She hears these little f**kers stories every d**n day. then they dumb a$$ parents call and say stuff like "he was a good kid", "he was hanging with the wrong crowd". My wife be like"Maam/Sir I've talked with your son and He WAS the wrong crowd." Kids do an amazing job of hiding there drug dealing/stealing/thug ways from there parents. Now that I say that his little a$$ might end up at Polk if he f up that sweet deal that daddy got him. But back to my point. Lowe can suck a fat one. I'm offended as hell. There are 3 A&T grads in my family and we aint never cracked someone over thead over some drugs. nor did anyone I hung out with. Yeah we brawled with Scott B one time, but that's different, LOL.
