the one draw back to swinton's game is being able to knock down th 17-18ft "j".... he is tough in the paint.... sitting out a yr. will allow him to develope that jumper...
if swinton comes here & has great success i think that will open doors to other top recruits... plus like it has been posted... he is a local kid who probably has a lot of people who want to see him play.... plus he is a good student!! it can only help you to have another body crashing the glass!!!

Deacon transfers
Forward Kevin Swinton transferred from Wake Forest to UNC Wilmington, the Wilmington Star-News reported. A 6-foot-7 sophomore who averaged 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds last season, he will be eligible to play for the Seahawks in the 2008-09 season.

He has the same thing almost every other greensboro kid has against "T".. they want to get away.. A&T is nothing special to them because they have been here all their lives. Most of them still consider "T" as an ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT.. then if they do decide to come here, they play like it was their last resort like we are still beneath them.. which means they never give us what they would have given App, or Western or even UNCG.. That "hes a local kid" line is a bunch of crap.. it doesnt matter whether he is or not..... Im not surprised that he would go to UNCW... but honestly I dont care because hes really not that special of a player. He was good in HS and hasnt shown anything since.. Let UNCW have him.. I like our chances to cut down the nets with the players we have here now.. Please understand that the coaches cant scoop up every player that transfers from another program.. our alumni dont give like that.. so therefore the money aint gone be there for them to get everybody that goes out on the free agent wire.... Accept the ones we have and support them.. WATCH THESE GUYS WRECK THE MEAC next year...

I second your thoughts above, Antfan.

i usually dont say much, but for the record, as a post player, Swinton is better than every player we currently have on the roster...havent seen the new recruits...i am speaking purely from basketball ability...he could easily average 15-20 and 10+ rebounds in the MEAC, and it wouldnt matter which school he played for...

uhhh actually hes NOT better than the guys we have now. Your point of reference is from him playing against HS competition. Hes NEVER really played against college competition so hes not developed in TWO YEARS... I would guess that he is about where he was when he got out of high school. I refuse to believe that hes better than ANY of our guys... PERIOD.. Im actually not disappointed that he may not come... We are better than we have been in a long time and we dont need a prima donna rollin up in here with this "grand" mentality that hes the chosen one.. or as they called him at Dudley.. " the Franchise"... he certainly wouldnt be the franchise here.. that might have been his problem at Wake.. He went in with that "im the franchise" mentality... As i said before...Ill take the guys we have now and anxiously await seeing them wreck the MEAC..

i dont think it's always that a local kid doesnt want to come to A&T...the question becomes, do we identify kids early enough in their careers? you have to identify kids with talent during their freshman year of high school...send them information..show them some interest early..dont wait until a kid is 6-8 in the 11th grade...it's too late then...everybody wants him then...was steve rush recruited by a&t after he left gboro day? we always talk about recruitment budgets....what about planning for the future instead of a quick fix? kids often remain loyal to the first school that started looking at them...let's understand one thing...NC is a mid major state...most kids from NC(and most other places) are not ACC, SEC, or Big East Players.....but what i have said for the last 10 years, we should be able to get the kids from NC that end up going to Elon, Western Carolina, App State and the likes....it's all about working smart...with a limited budget, we still should be able to send a kid a letter of interest...a stamp only costs 41 cents...

steve rush was recruited by hunter... he would have signed but hunter got the ax.... eaves did not have enough time to build a relationship with rush when he came in.... most kids in g'boro like everywhere else want to leave home... get out on their own....
one thing you have to remember is that this is acc country... most kids in nc want to play in the acc... there are plenty of kids who signed with acc schools who probably didn't belong in the acc... who ended up riding the bench..... but what can you tell a kid when all they see or hear their friends talk about is acc.... i mean during the acc tournament when i was in HS you may as well shut classes down because their was a tv in every classroom..... even now... my whole office shuts down because people bring tv's to work so everyone can watch the tournament!!!
the one thing we have right now in our b'ball programs & this is extremely important... is stability..... stability is the most important thing to have when you are cash strapped... some people will disagree but look around here... you don't have to look far to realize when people go half cocked to get a coach fired & ruin the stability that was in the program... it will set your program back tremendously.... if you look away from b'ball..... a good example is track..... "space" has run a successful track program even though his budget gets reduced constantly.... but you have someone at the helm who knows his craft... who is highly respected in the track world... but more importantly he gives the program stability.... stability to a department strapped for cash... is just as good as gold!!!

After seeing Swinton play against ACC competition for a couple of years, he was way in over his head but few people will admit it publiclly.
I'll take the three big kids we signed this spring along with the what we have returning for this coming season with seven seniors back and probably beat UNC-W's brains out.

Truckseeker,
I talked to spaceman a few days ago. He said his budget has never been reduced under Dee Tood, but it has never been increased, which doesn't help him at all.

Well, that's in keeping with the athletics budget as a whole. It hasn't been increased since gas was a buck and a quarter and you could buy a nice house for 100k.

Former Dudley High School basketball standout Kevin Swinton, who transferred from Wake Forest to UNC Wilmington over the summer, has been dismissed from the Seahawks team after his arrest on a felony gun charge, the school announced Monday night.
Swinton, 20, is due in a New Hanover County courtroom Nov. 15 for a first appearance.
According to court records, Swinton is charged with possessing or carrying a concealed gun, rifle, pistol or other firearm of any kind on educational property. The Class I felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and an unspecified fine.
"Kevin is a good student who comes from a supportive family," UNC Wilmington coach Benny Moss said in a statement released by the university. "Unfortunately, he put himself into a situation that has resulted in him no longer being a part of our basketball team."
As a transfer, Swinton would have had to sit out the 2007-08 season under NCAA rules. He was to have two years of eligibility remaining after averaging 2.8 points in 9.1 minutes per game as a Demon Deacons sophomore.
UNC Wilmington police records show that a weapons violation was reported at 11:39 p.m. Sunday in or near a campus residence hall.
The police department's most recent annual report said there were four such offenses in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Colleges have become more vigilant about guns since the Virginia Tech campus massacre in April, in which a student killed 32 students and wounded at least 17 others before shooting himself to death.
Attempts to reach Swinton were unsuccessful Monday night.
Swinton, a 6-foot-7 forward, was named a fourth-team All-American by Parade magazine after leading Dudley to an NCHSAA 3-A state championship in 2005.
Swinton was the News & Record's high school player of the year in his senior season, when he averaged 23.9 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game
Swinton's playing time at Wake Forest decreased from his freshman to sophomore years, and he elected to transfer after the 2006-07 season. He selected UNC Wilmington as his new destination over the summer, but he will apparently never play for the Seahawks.

His freshman year at Wake, he was suspended a few games for having a paint-gun in his dorm room. I guess the brother loves guns!!! He is a good kid and he is smart in the classroom but I don't know about other areas of his life. I feel he is worth taking a chance on.

It won't be long before someone representing Swinton will be tugging at Eaves to give this 'poor' boy another chance. Was this story on the front page of the N&R I bet not but gosh almighty it would have been blazen across the front page headlines if he had decided to attend "T".
