My cousin who attends A&T told me a group of students are planning to protest at the News and Record on 9/24 for all the negative press given to A&T.

Damn right! How many stories have they printed on our audit issues? How many stories have they printed about our allergen free peanut invention which is something with a world wide impact?

There was a front page article about the audit, the same day is the Career Fair. Over 200 companies in town and that's what they saw in the paper when they opened their hotel room door.

when they made a retraction it was in the B section..... those guys at the n&r must have never taken a creative writing class... they wrote the same story over & over for months... after the 1st couple of stries it wasn't front page news anymore because it had already been written....

THIS IS THE DUMBEST SH*T YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO!
1.) I completely understand the frustration and angry, I've had to shake my head as well, but they are bashing this story into the ground because new details haven't come out in a lump sum and the investigation is still on going, so every time a new ripple trickles out, it's newsworthy in Greensboro (believe it or not, this is an A&T city, UNCG isn't nearly as notable)
2.) WE WOULD NOT EVEN BE ACCREDITED IN JOURNALISM IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE NEWS & RECORD HELPING US WITH GRANTS AND MONEY (NEARLY ONE MILLION DOLLARS WORTH), MY DEGREE AND ANY OTHER JOMC ALUMS DEGREE WOULDN'T BE WORTH A CAN OF BEANS WITHOUT THEM!
FROM ALLEN JOHNSON, WHO IS AN EDITOR AT THE N&R AND HAS TAUGHT NEWSWRITING AT A&T FOR OVER 10 YEARS, TO VALERIE NEIMAN AND EMILY HARRIS (BOTH OF WHOM HAVE BEEN ADVISERS FOR THE A&T REGISTER), THE N&R HAS HELPED OUR UNIVERSITY AND OUR DEPARTMENT WHENEVER WE ASK FOR IT AND YOU KNOW WHAT, THEY'VE EARNED TO RIGHT TO SMASH US AND BE DISAPPOINTED WHEN WE MESS UP! THEY DON'T INVEST NEARLY THE TIME OR EFFORT IN THE OTHER AREA SCHOOLS AND MAYBE IF WE STOPPED PLAYING THE VICTIM AND GOT ON TOP OF OUR SH*T, WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS SITUATION. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY ALUMS AND BLACK WRITERS HAVE GOTTEN THEIR FIRST SHOT AT THE N&R BECAUSE OTHER PAPERS WEREN'T AS OPEN TO GIVING AGGIES AN OPPORTUNITY?
3.) What do you seriously plan on accomplishing by marching the the N&R and being arrested? You think that's positive press? I hope they put all the people who do that on the front page (some of whom are my friends).
ALL THESE PEOPLE WANT TO MARCH AND COMPLAIN BUT WHERE WE THEY WHEN THE N&R HAD A TOWN HALL MEETING LAST WEEK FOR PEOPLE TO VOICE CONCERNS OVER THINGS IN THE PAPER? They've been drinking the Jesse Jackson juice and are marching out in the streets hurting more than they are helping, once you do that you can throw away our credibility, this ain't the sit-in movement or anything of that nature.
IT'S A REASON MOST OF THE PEOPLE MARCHING AREN'T IN THE JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE EVERYBODY IN THE DEPARTMENT KNOWS THE TRUTH! DAVID STREET (SGA PRESIDENT) IS MY BOY BUT HE DON'T KNOW SH*T ABOUT THE JOMC DEPT. DOOMS, DECKS, BLUEHAZE, TRUTHSEEKER, YOU'RE WRONG ON THIS ONE, TRUST ME.
EVERY NEWSPAPER IN THE COUNTRY WOULD RUN THAT BAD PRESS! EVEN A&T'S. YOU CAN'T IGNORE NEWS BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT, ESPECIALLY NEWS LIKE THAT. A CAREER FAIR ISN'T NEWS WORTHY TO MARTHA, THE 45-YEAR OLD HOMEMAKER IN REIDSVILLE OR THE BURBS (THE N&R AUDIENCE) BUT IT IS TO STUDENTS (THE REGISTER AUDIENCE). SCANDALS SELL PAPERS, JOE THE CRACKHEAD ON E. MARKET KNOWS THAT!

It's as inexcusable to skip a town hall meeting that addresses your very complaint as it is to ignore solid evidence of misdeeds.
That being said, Mike, I understand your argument. But I feel that the N&R has practiced some irresponsible journalism. They've really gone the way of the National Enquirer with the sensationalism they are using when it comes to A&T. I'm all for above-board, responsible reporting of the news. I haven't really been seeing that from the N&R lately.
Are they teaching that b.s. in the classes? Seriously?

Here's my real point, I'm worried the N&R might be offended and possibly pull their funding and support. A lot of our teachers are N&R and if you take the core of all journalism, writing, away from the journalism department then it's a wrap for us as a department.
They aren't teaching us sensationalist tactics but Paris Hilton alone proved that "classic" journalism is dead for our generation (sadly). But seriously, is bad press worth marching over? I don't see O.J. or Mike Vick picketing the NY Times or Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This is a bad move and the chick spearheading it is a hothead who doesn't listen.

You should see about maybe changing the venue to the auditorium on campus and having a few N&R folks come for a dialogue. That should help diffuse it (I'd hope).

I SHOULD CHANGE IT? I don't have anything to do with that and will definitely be very critical of any student involved that tries to come to the Register after.
She is jeopardizing her journalism future at A&T and for what? Just to fit her "political/conscious" image. The former head of the department, a woman who got us accredited, has Emmys, 30 years in TV with CBS and a vote for the damn academy awards, called her, explained the facts and the chick was still like, "I feel like this is right, I'm still gonna do it." So, if she ain't gonna listen that kinda resume, she definitely not gonna listen to me.

Well, if they go through with the protest. Depending on its outcome, (especially if there are negative implications from it) there could be possible violation of the Student Code of Conduct.
However, they have a right because of the 1st amendment...but I don't feel that their cause is strong enough. If they wanted to protest the N&R's portrayal of the AfAm community, more power to them. However, we messed up here in Aggieland, and people here help feed them information. But to protest "bad press...that is somewhat the truth"... i can't back that.

If there was a forum held where we could address our concerns and we skipped it in favor of this march then we will look like imbeciles.

There are better ways to get our point across...I would request another town hall forum on campus... but even then people won't come. We can't communicate effectively on campus, that or... people really just don't care. I would bet that only 1 out of 10 Aggies on campus even know what the name of the Greensboro paper is.

mm.news-record.com/legacy/indepth/07/ncat_092207/FIVE pictures of the post-game melee, four of the actual game. This stuff needs to be addressed somewhere. Mike, if you don't think you should change it (and you're probably right, you shouldn't) then you probably shouldn't complain either. This stuff needs to be addressed. We have an inordinate amount of negative press associated with the school. It's wrong.

Well, they went along with their plans to protest and as we speak they are making fools of themselves and the university, I know you went to Jena and you want to maintain the momentum from that but they are better, more important issues that could use your support. I talked to the SGA Prez before the game Saturday and he said he wasn't gonna argue with me but that he had to do SOMETHING about the excessive press. I'm in Environment Issues right now shaking my head.
As far as the pictures go, bad press goes first. It's just the nature of the business, I read the AP story, had a couple mistakes and a lot of exaggerations which bring in to question the ethics of select writers at the the Raleigh News & Observer and the Greensboro News & Record. That (those writers) should be addressed.
I give all the credit in the world to the N&R reporter who braved pepper spray to get those shots. It wouldn't have been me but in that case, it's like, he ran in the midst of an altercation and that brawl did overshadow one of the best games I've ever seen in Aggie Stadium, sad but true. News is news.
