Mike, you're a current student. Is A&T THAT bad nowadays? Seriously.
Where's the ethics that go along with reporting? Four pictures of a two minute scuffle and three pictures of an exciting three plus hour gridiron battle? Hmmph. I wonder how many papers that actually sells. Probably about zero.

I would have only ran ONE picture of the Aggie-Eagle classic and maybe 2 of the altercation, that's just me personally. Random violence is SHOCKING, football is football, SHOCKING can (possibly) sell papers, football is always going to be there.
Those pictures weren't unethical but the story was.

I don't think one pic would've been overboard but four is ridiculous. I was acatually under the bleachers when this was going on and I had no idea it was happening. That's how brief it was. The pictures look like Montgomery, Alabama in the 1960s with all black people.

Campus is not that bad. However, the News and Record has a history of not being "fair and balanced" in their reporting. But the News and Record publishes what they consider to be "news", regardless of how bad it looks to us.

N.C. A&T students picket outside News & Record By Gerald Witt Staff Writer Monday, Sep. 24, 2007 4:40 pm Credit: Lynn Hey/News & Record The protestors outside the newspaper. About 50 students from N.C. A&T picketed the News & Record today, asking for favorable coverage to counter recent news reports on questionable spending at the university. They shouted:
"What do we want? We want positive press. When do we want it? Right now."
They paced the sidewalk fronting the paper at 200 E. Market Street for about an hour this afternoon.
David Street, student body president at A&T, said that he and some students and faculty members believe that the newspaper's reporting on internal and state audits of the university has been excessive.
"We just want to see fairness. If you're going to cover the bad stuff, then cover the positive stuff," Street said.
Several stories about the audits have appeared in the newspaper since members of the UNC Board of Governors discussed an audit at their January meeting.
John Robinson, editor of the News & Record, said that he believes the newspaper's treatment of news from the school has been balanced.
"I think that, by far, we run more stories that are positive than negative," Robinson said about coverage of A&T, mentioning a story on its ROTC program, which appeared on the front page of the paper Saturday, and one on its band, which appeared on the front page Monday.
Street acknowledged those stories, but said he believed that such stories should be more frequently reported.
"If you're going to cover the stuff that's bad, cover the positive stuff with the same vigor," he said.
Findings from the A&T audits included evidence of misused funds, poor internal controls, and allegations of nepotism and poor oversight. Auditors recommended a criminal investigation, which the Guilford County district attorney recently asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct.

...does the N&R cover the positive stuff that UNCG, Greensboro College, Guilford College and Bennett College does??? Nopes.... and when they do its buried in Peoples and Places on Sunday.
...when A&T has positive news, its buried in People and Places also... however, most of our students only read the "online" version of the paper. So you only get the headlines. Read the whole piece of crap paper and you'll see the press releases we put out weekly.

So just because the news and record throws money at us gives them the right to trample our name through the mud? I thought hush money was for thugs and criminals. At the end of the day Mike all we have is our name. Our institution is being hit left and right with negative press most of which wouldn't leave Greensboro if the N&R wouldn't broadcast every nickel that falls to the floor. If the N&R stops supporting the journalism department because of students using their 1st amendment right then did they really support us to begin with, or is the money donated just for them to keep a fly on the wall at A&T in case something big happens? If your department can be bought out i'm sorry sir. But tell "massa" News and Record to stop dragging us through the mud the next time he stops by NCB to drop off the check.

ALL THESE PEOPLE WANT TO MARCH AND COMPLAIN BUT WHERE WE THEY WHEN THE N&R HAD A TOWN HALL MEETING LAST WEEK FOR PEOPLE TO VOICE CONCERNS OVER THINGS IN THE PAPER? While I have a problem with the coverage, I have just as much, if not more of a problem with the above quote. They gave us the opportunity to speak directly to them and we didn't take it. That is foolish.

Come on AggieBred, all I'm saying is do your homework and know the ENTIRE situation before you jump to the 'THEY SMASHING US' conclusion.
Great point - "...does the N&R cover the positive stuff that UNCG, Greensboro College, Guilford College and Bennett College does??? Nopes.... and when they do its buried in Peoples and Places on Sunday." People and Places is where most positive news is and if I remember correctly that isn't available online which is where most students see N&R stories.
And the money they gave isn't hush money, they aren't A&T's or my own "massa," it's just smart to handle things professionally (especially when money is involved) and when the professional opportunity arose (town hall), where were we? They've been more than supportive of the "negroes on Eastside" and most of the people marching knew nothing about that or decided to ignore that to be down for the cause. Maybe it's cause I come from a school that made the paper if somebody sneezed hard and I'm used to it.
News can go anywhere bruh, it's a lil organization called the Associated Press that allows you to see stories from damn near every paper in the world and the N&R is on that press wire. So the news gets out regardless.
This all goes back to an debate I had with some people in the major, it's a big difference between PR and news. PR is all positive and we are trained not to be university PR machines. So, unless it's something that's just tugging at your heart strings human interest. If you want to see A&T's positive news read A&T Today but bad news is NEWS and that's all I'm stressing.
I'm happy you got your point across to them without any major crap, but I love throwing the example of UNCG's student newspaper out. When the Carolinian had an audit where funds were messed up they made headlines every time a new wrinkle was released and the Register circulates more than them, probably has a larger budget and staff, now imagine if we messed up the money at our paper, it's newsworthy, too bad for us it wasn't the Register and our mini budget, it was the university and it's massive budget, IT'S NEWS PEOPLE, LIKE IT OR NOT!
I found common ground with a lot of people when it came to PUSHING your positive news and I guess that falls back on who...university relations? We all know they are understaffed and overworked as is so you can't expect them type up extra press releases for the N&R every day. Nobody sees it if it's only you and your crew who know about it.
(But seriously, to even fathom that we've been bought is a slap in the face and I'm disappointed in that assessment).

Point taken... Some people didn't know the facts going into the protest...The students let the president speak for them and I think that was good...I do say that the university has a problem running their mouth at the wrong time (Chair of the Board). I would love to see a forum between the N&R the Register and the students.

Since we are all action oriented, let's make it happen, you know I'm down for OPEN DISCUSSION.
I'm glad they let Street do the talking, only thing I'd change is the word "stuff" kinda makes you come off like a kid but he got the point across.

Well, in conversations I've had this week the biggest suggestions that I have here is to have the Register work closer with University Relation to serve as an "PR" tool to highlight our "good" press.
But, our students need to start buying the News and Record in print form and really see what it says. The online version does not make accessing stories, especially local ones easily...and our student body wants things to be "easy...simple"... wonder why we voted down the Civil Rights Museum bonds.

The A&T Register will do what we can to get our positive news out but we WILL NOT be another PR outlet for University Relations. We have a job to hold to university accountable the same way any taxpayer does and we will continue to shine light on our good news AND our bad news because it is NEWS. We are not a PR publication
