I was looking at some stats and I was surprised to see that A&T has more students enrolled than FAMU. 11300 to 10500
When this occur? Or, has FAMUs numbers declined?

Actually none of those numbers are correct today...But with all the shifts in this HBCU turmoil were going through, A&T may be #1 next year by default.

Believe it or not but after that movie "Drumline" a lot of kids started to apply for A&T. I don't know if that has anything to do with our enrollment but it did not hurt it.

What it did hurt was our Median SAT score, Median GPA, Grad Rates and Retention rates. Now the Administration is overreacting and plans to up admission standards. Out-of-state students beginning in 08-09 must have a 3.0 GPA and a 1000 SAT score. Athletes are not exempt.

That would have cancelled me out. I had the SAT score but my GPA was around a 2.6 or something.

The real issue is the Focused Growth initiative, which mandated that the 5 HBCUs , Western Carolina and Pembroke reach astronomical enrollments by 2008. However, at A&T we didn't put the proper programs in place to deal with the growth and retain students.
So, 08-09 we will have mandatory admission standards in-state and out of state and its projected that enrollment will level off for a few years. So its not over-reacting, but we have to be in a position to able to grow.

Ouch. That would've kept me out too. My SAT was pretty high but the ole gpa was terrible.
Still, I'm for it. It'd be better if they'd also allow us to increase the out-of-state enrollment cap and/or put in a sliding scale for gpa and standardized test score as well.

I would have made it by the skin of my teeth on both GPA and SAT. I think raising the standard is fine as long as in-state standards rise in the same proportion. We just have to do good job of letting high schoolers and alumni know now.

Would have kept me out if I was "out-of-state". That's steep.

If this goes through, get ready to become seller dwellers.

He meant "cellar." A clear example of why standards should be increased.
On the other hand I've read where kids today are terrible across the board at things that were basic a generation or two ago. I don't know how we can shore that up.

Hopefully, despite what admissions standards are in place the school will take a holistic approach to reviewing student applications.
