Just wait until those scholarships kick in from the increased student activity fees next school year. Imagine a 250-300-piece band and auxiliary by 2025. I don't think we need to be much larger. We sound great. I don't think a 300 member band serves a purpose. Many of the Sudler trophy winners had bands of that size.

this kind of thing is always "subjective". there will always be "controversy" associated with any battle of the bands because declaring the winner is always "subjective". as far as i'm concerned, it is what it is... It’s subjective to a point…but, when you are judging the percussion and only one band does a percussion feature, what do you do? When you judge auxiliary and JSU dance did a dance routine which was very good but, Golden Delight does a dance routine which was very good ….AND they twirled flags AND they twirled batons, I mean what do you do? I don't disagree but, I will say Jackson State was arrogant in their approach. They didn't cater their show to the criteria that was given that would be judged. I just used the analogy of a job interview and you have two candidates and one has a 4.0 gpa coming out of school and the other candidate has a 3.0 and he/she has work experience and participated in extracurricular activities. Although there's subjectivity in the choice, I would think it's safe to say that one person is more well-rounded. While JSU is a very good band...they made a decision to not pay attention to the judgement criteria as closely as they should have and it cost them. Just my opinion.

2023 Band Of The Year Review UNBIASED!!! Talking About EVERYTHING!!!Link I agree exactly. So, she spelled out what I was saying. JSU losing doesn't take a thing away from them, they are like that...don't get me wrong. But, they came to the competition as if it was the battle of the bands in Houston at the beginning of the season. But, this competition was judged on the field. From my understanding, the judges didn't start judging until the band played their first note. WELL, JSU does the Tiger run on the field, that so many people love but, that was not judged. Then, they got back in the stands, and blew the roof off the dome but, only one song was judged. So, it didn't matter that you played 3 or 4. Now, I will say there was a level of arrogance from JSU to think they could dismiss the judging criteria and still win. On the flipside, everybody in the band world knows, if you give Dr. Ruff time to prepare for a field show competition, you will have HELL on you hands...it's known! So, the arrogance I just didn't get.

A lot of people have raised questions about the scoring matrix used by the judges panel. This press conference the day before the competition spelled it out in no uncertain terms. A&T hit it out of the park in all the categories while JSU was tiny bit lacking in the percussion, auxiliary and presentation pieces. However, the botched execution of the "QR Code formation" they attempted pretty much sealed their fate. That was a killer.

I didn't realize BGMM got a $100k check as well as trophy? Lol, this keeps gets better. 🤣 Is that $100,000 on top of the $45,000 they gave them on Friday? What was the 45k for? As I recall the D1 winner was to receive 100k and D2 winner 75k. Is that incorrect?

Scholarships can be better used to impact instrumentation mix, messiahship, and retention rather than just size, In other words, I would rather a great bandsman get a larger scholarship or a 4-year one than give a smaller scholarship to more students for the sake of size alone. I'd rather have the right 220 than a mediocre 300.

And not $200 or $300 but some real money. Those kids put in 15 to 20 hours extra each week in band practice and performances. That's a damn part time job! BTW, this year's band is the perfect size! 👌

And you're absolutely right, if you give Dr. Ruff the time, he'll show up with the BGMM and cut you off at the knees 😉 And that's the Aggie culture... despite the naysayers and obstacles, we'll put in the extra time and effort to be the best. Aggies, always doing but never done!

ShowtimeWebHey SWAC fans, the criteria for the Band of The Year was no "Top Secret" formula. Hell, every week starting back in August the judges posted the rankings and individual band scores for every category. So, if you were paying attention you saw each week exactly why some bands moved up or fell in the ranking. So either Jackson State decided they didn't want to work that hard to check all the judge's boxes or they just thought they were grading on the curve. Either way, congratulations to Dr. Ruff, his staff and those fabulous BGMM Band members! Loyalty

Aggies, always doing but never done! The JSU arrogance can easily be explained. Jackson State fell into the old complacency trap that many good athletic teams do in reading and believing in their own hype instead of putting in the time and work. They sold us short and paid the price. That was the difference between us and them. Respect all but fear none.

In the end theirs, and only theirs are the opinions that really mattered.
