Jackson State and/or their fans are protesting. They say Jackson is the true winner and their supporters agree. And of course the broadcast team of Walker and Greene, both "band experts" agreed that in their eyes Jackson State won. So, what was it that made or caused the so-called expert panel of former band people to not select Jackson? Why did they award the championship to A&T? The sponsors of the event may have second thoughts about putting their name and money behind such a venture next year. Let's hope not. Let's hope that the general public will not drag one or both schools through the mud.

Trolls and haters have no say over the legitimacy of the award. We were the Number 1 band going into the championship and independent judges agreed.

Jackson state alums cry about everything lol Every time JSU go to Atlanta for something they find a way to lose. Pay no attention to social media…the judges, were more than qualified and were never questioned by any of the people now complaining. Facebook, twitter, and tick tok are not real places…you got to stay away from that mess. |

I saw an online review and the reviewer pointed out.
*JSU had drill formation errors
*BGMM had a more balanced performance - did a better job of incorporating auxiliaries. Said flag work was superb.
He didn't give an opinion on who won but seemed to agree with the decision. I don't know how scoring works in band competitions but the final score seems to me that the BGMM won by a comfortable margin?

I clicked on this thinking it was about to be reported that A&T cheated or something...lol. Why in the world would we "relinquish" something that was rightfully earned and vetted by competent and unbiased judges?? Instead of worrying about social media chatter from jaded SWAC folks, spend time basking in the glory of another historic win for our institution.

It's all about "flash" and not about substance. Years ago I went to a "classic" game in Atlanta in the old dome when NCAT and JSU played a football game. Man those JSU fans were...dare I say it, worse than Aggies LOL !!! Before the game started...during the game...and after the game...on, and on, and on. I was talking smack with with one group until it got pointless. They wanted to continue, but I decided that every time they spoke out I would just point at the scoreboard. It became a big joke after a while as people laughed every time I did it, but I was just proving a point. After they lost the game they said "Well, we won halftime"...but truth be told, if you watched the video, NCAT won that too. It wasn't because we were as "flashy" as JSU, but our music was better...our precision was unmatched on that day, and our ladies did it all (danced, twirled, tumbled). I enjoyed JSUs show, and they ladies was shaking that "thang", but our football team and band were just better. |

I've tracked all the judges scoring leading up to the "Band of the Year" final competition and the BGMM was on top or near the top all season. By the way, I don't think there were any "A&T" band staff members serving as "Judges" for the competition. One of the Co-Chairs of the judges was a former Jackson State Band Director! Hell, if anything, with all the SWAC band judges, I was surprised that we won too! That's when you know you're good! Even all the SWAC judges couldn't pick Jackson State!
I found this clip about the competition..."The judges for the competition are a selection committee of marching band experts who are co-chaired by Jackson State Director of Bands Emeritus, Professor Dowell Taylor, and Dr. Julian E. White, FAMU Director of Bands Emeritus. The committee evaluates the bands based on their auxiliaries, drum majors, musicality, percussion, and picture/drill design. The committee also releases monthly power rankings for both Division I and Division II bands based on their graded halftime performances during the football season. The top two bands from each division in the final rankings will earn the right to compete for the national title in Atlanta."

What that says to me from the outside looking in is that the swac folks wished they could have directed bands that concentrated on the things our band does, but they were prevented from doing so by their fan base.
