Again, if i were coach ross, i wouldn't worry about that cuz he has very little control over kids transferring. it don't matter what classification an athlete is, they "all" can transfer if they decide to do so. imo, a good coach shouldn't waste his time "worrying" about whether an athlete will transfer or not. to me, that time "wasted" while worrying about an athlete transferring can be better spent creating "the best" environment possible for a basketball athlete at our level, but beyond that? let the chips fall where they may. its a new day in college athletics, kids can transfer without penalty by virtue of the transfer portal and there's not very much a coach can do about that except provide the best basketball program possible so that the vast majority of players will not have a desire to leave. other than that, let the chips fall where they may, "next man up"! You keep making a point about transferring, but if you read my last 3 to 4 posts you will find that I used the word graduating many more times than transferring. Coaches have a good idea of how many players they will lose due to graduation each year and can plan ahead for that. That is why I initially asked what classification would this player be since he had 3 associate degrees. Any concerns about him transferring was a secondary effect to the primary focus on his classification. Coaches care about player's eligibility and classification (graduation) and they don't necessarily have to be the same. Even my example mentioned a redshirt player "graduating" early. This is a mute point now that Aggie One answered my questions on this player's eligibility and classification. Like you, I have no concerns regarding a player's freedom to transfer and that a coach cannot anticipate a kid transferring (coaches sometimes run players off) or choice to turn pro. I guess we disagree on whether a coach should concern himself in knowing when one of his players possibly might "graduate early". Although this could have no, a negative, or a positive impact on the team depending on the value of the player (LeBron vs me 🤣) to the program. Again, not high on a coach's concern list. i'd be willing to bet my house that if the kid still has 2 years of eligibility left, he will stay in college at least until he has used up his 2 years of eligibility. that's why classification doesn't really matter to me cuz no matter what, the kid ain't gone leave a year of "unused" eligibility on the table. like i said, if he graduates after year 1, then he can still play another year as a grad student. if he doesn't graduate after year 1, then he can still play another year as an undergrad. as a coach, my only concern relative to his classification is that he earns his degree...

We lost 14 out of 17 players amounting to a little over 82%. I have never seen this happen in any sport at any school unless there was something major that occurred (like the SMU death penalty, physical or mental misconduct). This is not normal even during the transfer portal era. We got a lot of work to do.

A little different since 10 players left after the hiring of the new coach at St. John's where the majority of our players left before we hired Coach Ross. I suspect Coach Pitino persuaded most of those players to transfer versus them leaving on their own. Most players would jump at the opportunity to play for a championship coach that could improve their development as well as wins for the school, if they are not fearful of change or hard work. Coach Pitino also decided to build his team with mostly transfers to quickly challenge for a conference championship and a NCAA birth versus a slow rebuild.

I agree you also have to look at who the coach is “Rick Pitino”and the school is a Big East school.
We don’t have a big name coach nor are we in the Big East.

Those type of programs and coaches can rebuild quickly through the transfer portal because of the coach's reputation and institutions history of playing and competing at the highest level of NCAA basketball. Comparing St John's program to A&T's should not be even entertained in conversation. Programs at all level have to build their programs entirely different. If the transfer portal is used it has to be at a plug and a play level with the majority of the team being incoming freshman to build a stable Foundation.

The problem, now, with building stable foundations is that kids can leave so easily (and are). I think we have to have the mindset that rebuilding might need to happen every year. If it doesn't then good.

All 3 of us (FriscoTxAggie, Saabman, and I) in some way compared or highlighted the differences between what happened at St. John's vs A&T and their attempt to right the ship. No blame, because there are many ways to lead to success. A&T did what was best for it.

Now you see him, now you don't. It's like a perpetual game of musical chairs with him.

...If rosters were finalized today, 44% of players who entered the portal this year WOULD NOT play NCAA basketball in the upcoming 2023-24 season.

If it doesn't then good. This is what concerns me with totally rebuilding the team primarily with high school kids. Possibly works well if they stay. Imo, in current environment, you must get back what you lose to the transfer portal.

Exactly….You can hate the transfer portal but if all you do is lose kids to the portal and you don’t pull some experienced players you are in trouble..
Its also an idea that every kid in the portal has baggage and many do but so do high school kids and high schools kids lack experience.
Bottom line you got work the portal to balance out the team.
