I see Hampton in Championship of Big South against Winthrop.. In a post in another thread, I mistakenly said that the Big South’s title game is today.
That was wrong. #5 Hampton vs. #2 Winthrop is Sunday at 1:00 pm on ESPN...live from Rock Hill.

HU seemed to come apart at the seams. It's hard to beat a good team on their home court...with the refs leaning toward the home team. Hampton did well to get to the final and just ran out of luck.

Naw, they pretty much bottled Marrow and forced other cats to score, and only Stanley was able to be a consistent contributor.

Heard, not seen, the refs did a job on Hampton. I watched the game, and the refs did a major hose job on the Pirates...especially at one critical point midway through the 2nd half and the Pirates ahead by a bucket.
In one play, a Pirate was driving down the lane and got clotheslined on what was surely a flagrant foul on any court, and the refs called an offensive foul on the HU player.
Then, right after that, a Winthrop player was shooting the second of 2 FTs and his shot wedged (got stuck) between the rim and the backboard. The refs huddled and awarded Winthrop the ball out of bounds under their own basket and they scored off of that. This is what started their game-winning run.

Oh yeah that "inadvertent whistle" was terrible, but if they would have gone to arrow for ball being stuck would have been in Winthrop's favor as well. However I thought i heard the ball eventually dropped (we didnt see on TV), after the whistle blew, hence the "inadvertent whistle".
Winthrop did score on the ensuing possession but too much time was left for it to have had an effect on the outcome of game. There were plenty more HU possessions with mo ball movement and long missed jump shots.
Good win by Winthrop.

I understand you reasoning but, I have to say all it takes is one bad call to swing momentum in the other teams favor. That's why I'm always critical of refs who cannot lay off the whistle. And if you are gonna call it tight, make sure as hell you call on both ends tight. But, what I've witnessed through the years, officials aren't consistent enough to call it that way. Just like A&T vs NCCU round 2...Durham posted a video of R. Jackson dunking on J. Blount which clearly could've been called an and 1. Blount was not outside the circle and he stopped Jackson's momentum to the rim. Jackson was still able to finish strong with the dunk. The officials calls it a play on, I'm fine with that. But, now when we were on defense, all the chest bumps we gave in the paint is being whistled to only foul our bigs out later on in the game. That's piss poor in my opinion. I understand hostile environments can sway calls to the home team but, if you get intimidated by a crowd, give up the whistle.

Yeah sometimes even officials get caught up in the emotion of the game, which is unfortunate because usually it results in the situation youare referring to in Durham.
I heard a commentator the other day, I believe it was Paul Biancardi on the Hampton game give an official for waiting to see if a shot went in before calling a foul. He said since the shot didnt fall the official blew the whistle. I was a tad bit flabbergasted because if a defensive players impedes the progress of an offensive player and affects a shot attempt, IT IS A FOUL. If the shot is made, its and "and 1", if the shot is missed, its 2 shots. Point blank, period, end of story. A foul is a foul is a foul is a foul. You see it call it and administer the foul shots accordingly.

It is what it is now.
