Welcome to the fan forum and I'm glad to see Harry and the rest of the basketball team in first place. Now to your question, the first thing it means is we have to develop rivalries with a new set of teams and fans from various Big South schools. A&T will not be able to participate in the Celebration Bowl and may lose some revenue during this transition time as some of the fans will no longer be interested in going to A&T games. Stay tuned for other impacts from this move to the Big South Conference. they aint real fans if thats the case..........

Welcome to the Big South! I know that some A&T fans are disappointed to leave the MEAC, but, from a UNC Asheville fans perspective, you're coming to a good, very stable conference. Hampton's first year coming in conference was kind of rough, but this year, once Morrow came back from injury, they've played better.
A lot of teams are kind of retooling this year, but there is usually a ton of talent in the BS. UNCA is currently rebuilding from a decade of success once Nick McDevitt took the MTSU job. Winthrop and UNCA have been the juggernauts of Big South basketball over the last 10 years. Winthrop is very good again this year and is on track to be a 12 or 13-seed.
Radford and Gardner-Webb have been very good as well. High Point should be good again once they open their new arena in the Fall of 2020. Longwood will also be completing a new arena in 2022. Campbell was very good for three or four seasons with Chris Clemons. Overall, winning conference year in and year out is a tremendous challenge.

Also, with 12 schools, the conference would likely go back to the two divisions like they have in the past. This is what that would likely look like. The conference would likely go back to 16 league games. 2 in your division and 1 outside your division. Although, 18 or 20 conference games may be more beneficial.
North 1. Radford 2. Hampton 3. Campbell 4. NC A&T 5. High Point 6. Longwood
South 1. UNC Asheville 2. Winthrop 3. Gardner-Webb 4. USC Upstate 5. Charleston Southern 6. Presbyterian

A lot of us are looking at this from a football perspective. I appreciate your view from the hoops side. I noted that UNCA picked up LaVar Batts, a former 4-star NC State PG recruit, as a transfer. We did the same this year with Blake Harris, who is now sitting out for us. LaVar seems to be fitting in well. Change is a challenge. And we've had a pretty rich hoops tradition in the MEAC that we're looking to resurrect. Thanks for sharing your side.

Do all of the teams play baseball in the conference? Kennesaw, Monmouth and N. Alabama are football only. Everyone else plays baseball. The conference tournament is in Fayetteville, N.C. That's much better for us from a travel perspective than Daytona, FL.

I definitely look at things a little different coming from a basketball school like UNCA. I do think that eventually you guy's will be happy with the move. Plus, I think NCCU could eventually make the move as well. Basketball wise, it's very hard to win conference year in and year out. Beginning next season, the conference tournament will be in Charlotte at the Bojangles Coliseum.

And I've been warning folks that NCCU is a silent partner in this deal. Time will tell.

Plus that would put 3 UNC system schools in this league and it would have a very solid NC core. Oh, and just wondering...why doesn’t UNCA have a football team. ASU, WCU, but not UNCA ?

Oh, and just wondering...why doesn’t UNCA have a football team. ASU, WCU, but not UNCA ? Most in the Big South expect/want Presbyterian to drop down. They just can't compete at the D1 level, not to mention in the Big South. Give it a little time, but I think NCCU will probably replace them or become a member regardless. The BS has a lot of structure. We have a good mix of full members with some very notable private schools including High Point and Campbell is the largest private school in the state of North Carolina, plus now with Hampton. Add in Gardner-Webb and those are some quality programs and institutions. High Point is loaded with cash. They're in the middle of investing like $2Bil in their campus over the next 10 years. The $120mil arena they're building and completing in the Fall was paid for in cash. Campbell and UNCA also built new arenas a few years back. Then you have a good mix of notable public institutions with Winthrop, UNCA and Radford. People know less about CSU, Longwood and USC Upstate. Longwood is beginning it's new investment with a new arena opening in two years. While those three may not have as much clout, the conference really does have a good mix of institutions. In terms of football, I definitely expect the Big South to add more institutions with football the coming years. To answer your question on UNCA though, UNCA doesn't have the infrastructure or room on their campus to have a football program. The school, honestly, would never really consider starting a football program. I was told that some five years ago. When they built Kimmel Arena on the north end of campus, just adding in the parking garages took an enormous amount of space. The campus is very urbanized and just north of Downtown Asheville. Downtown Asheville is really urbanized place, even though it is in the mountains.

The more I peek around the internet, the more I think basketball is a real winner in this thing. From media coverage, to talent, to facilities, to infrastructure.
