I don't know but I wish that A&T would do more to leverage our current status as the largest HBCU in the country. The hottest pop star in the country features Southern in her new video. Howard strikes up a creative partnership with Amazon. FAMU is featured in the movies. I would love to see more of A&T in the limelight. We got to strike while the iron is hot.

How is this any different from what the Machine does every week? What are yall watching / hearing that I am missing? The machine: 1. Does not play with "attitude" like this 2. Does not play as many "funky" arrangements and cadences anymore 3. Can not play one note and you say "Daaaammmn!" 4. Does not "go after" the other band anymore (at one point Alcorn played a song and Southern yelled back "Y'all played that last year!" and broke out into a song). 5. Does not play and move their upper body at the same time anymore 6. Does not have 40 trumpets that scream at you anymore 7. Does not have that same fire Don't get me wrong, the kids have the ability to do all of that, but that is not the brand we want to portray. The same way our crowd is a "wine and cheese" crowd, our band can be a wine and cheese band sometimes also. This year in particular they are a young band (FR and SO) and are no longer considered in the top five HBCU bands as in previous years. The "ghetto" energy that the SGA was trying to get out of the students at the beginning of the year is the energy that resides in SWAC bands and crowds the whole game. Even the "old folks" get up and move in the SWAC. The video is of the ZERO quarter which consists of bands BATTLING in the stands for 30 minutes BEFORE the game even starts to get the crowd hype. That doesn't exist in the MEAC but is a common occurrence at rivalry games in the SWAC. This is in addition to halftime, play in the stands during the game, and a 5th quarter after the game. Let's play a game for a second. Close your eyes. Imagine a white guy, any white guy, walking down the street. A few seconds later, is a brother walking that just came out of the barbershop. That's the difference.

That's the difference. This is so on point what you have stated, our band is a wine and cheese band period. The edge/ fire that a lot of people want in our band was pushed out years ago. The MEAC as a whole is just suffering in terms of bands, MEAC bands dont travel anymore, funding appears to be down. I believe there was only one band that came to Aggie Stadium this year and that was NCCU in a down pour. As a band I know we can do better as far as crowd engagement and hope that they start doing those things again.

But I thought we were just picked as the top band of the year by one of those band geek websites.
And every game that I have been to this year, the Machine has always gotten a standing ovation. The halftime shows still seem pretty creative to me. I dont know, but I am somewhat surprised by these observations.

Those websites are looking at field shows for sure and not total game day experience that a band does. I think there is a difference between what is done on the field and what is done in the stands. The machine is pretty good during halftime with creative shows and excitement for the most part. In the stands they leave a lot to be desired and if i am correct that is what Maxell is speaking on.

That was the last year that their lead arranger Dr. Thomas Jones ,now band director at Hampton was on board .Dude is a hell of an arranger and taskmaster , he would be the one overseeing the practice sessions whenever I took the time to watch .In 2017 we had 20 tubas ,now we have 12 and overall we are smaller than 2017 . It's not just the numbers but what type instruments you have . Southern ,and Jackson St ,as well as BCU have more brass instruments than woodwinds, that's where the power comes from . I think we have way too many percussion players and not enough brass players . Yes the BGMM puts on very creative halftime shows ,buts that's about it , when it comes to the stands ,that's where we fall off .All of the bands I mentioned earlier would eat our lunch in the stands .
