Third and 10 ... clear passing down ... you have your best shutdown corner guarding the opposing team's best WR ... and this is the defense you draw up? Help me out here. Why are we telling Mac to give that much cushion to the Morgan wideout? Spoiler alert: Morgan took the slant route that we were begging them to take with this alignment and converted the first down.

We don’t have a shutdown corner at the moment. Mac will hopefully recover his pre-injury form. But, he’s not there just yet.

Fair enough.
But does he have to give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 10? You dont even trust him enough to let him backpedal?

Do our dbacks ever go into 1 and/or press coverage? Where's the depth at dback? And bigger question: If a 9 year old girl sees a problem with the scheme, why don't the co-D coordinators?

Thrillas he is at the first down marker, its 3rd down. You let him catch it and tackle anything in front of you to force a field goal. There is nothing wrong with where he is lined up at considering the down and distance. If the slant was hit it was because the OLB didn't drop to where he was suppose to drop to. Let the play run and watch the OLB.
Yall are hilarious.

I understand playing to the sticks, but do you really like giving the opposing WR a free release in that situation ... without any chance to redirect him on his route? BTW: I posed this thread as a question and not a statement because I legitimately am trying to understand the mindset here. I just haven't seen many DBs give this much cushion on a 3rd and 10, especially on the boundary side.

How can the OLB drop back for the slant and cover the RB at the same time? The real question is what was the coverage? were we in quarters defense? does the OLB have the RB or the CB have that side. Seems like they ran the perfect play for our coverage?

Seems like they ran the perfect play for our coverage? The "perfect" play is relative I guess. If it worked then it was the perfect play. My point is that McCain is not wrong in where he is lined up. If he plays closer and gets beat deeper the question will be, "well why didn't he just keep everything in front of him and the sticks?". Based on how it played out it was still the OLB's fault. Its 3rd and 10. Let that damn RB go into the flats for a split second while you cover the slant. He wasn't desciplined. If he catches it in the flats then you can break on him and you STILL have McCain there with everything in front of him to help you out. The OLB reacted to the RB route to soon given the down and distance. He did exactly what the offense expected a undisciplined LB to do. Just play for the sticks and tackle well. Thats the A&T defensive philosophy and the OLB didn't follow it.

And people were saying that even with the LBs we had out it didn't make a difference in the defense because of the total points scored by them. It sure did, and on a crucial drive. This was definitely a whole team loss.

The offense lost this for us....hard to win a game when your offense scores 1 TD and has 2 turnovers.

We can agree to disagree, but we just pointed out a mistake by the defense that I can only assume ended up in 7 instead of 3.

Well in all fairness, that drive would have resulted in 3 ... but McNeil got called for roughing the kicker on their field goal attempt.
