I have been clamoring for this kid to get a strong look for the past few months. He is an unsigned PG for 2016 class from I.C. Norcom. Travis Fields is 5-10 but has the heart of a champion and a motor that never quits. His 3A team just won their third consecutive VHSL state championship last night where he scored 30 points including the following bucket... He didnt play the last four minutes of the 3rd qtr or the first four of the fourth due to collecting his 4th personal foul and still finished with 30. The previous clip encapsules his hs career in a 5 second span. He was the 4A State Player of the Year last season and after last nights performance has to be a shoe in this season. I was even compelled to send a letter to the entire A&T coaching staff once i got home from the gsme last night. I cant speak enough about how much this kid is a winner. I hope our coaching staff at minimum inquires about this kid. I've stated in a previous post that Norcom's HC is an A&T alum, Leon Goolsby, so if anything there should be a strong connection to help these kids at least get a look from T. I just worry he may end up at Norfolk State or Hampton and then see him at least 8 times. If we are really in the market for a PG, and someone from a winning program this kid deserves a long hard look we most "definitely" do need a point guard!! we will not have ahmad abdullah next season who was the only "true point guard" on our roster. doggone right we need a point guard, baddddd!! i can't imagine our staff not at least showing an interest in this kid... Is the staff aware of this player; send the letter.

Unless we have someone who can step up to play pg I think our best option is to try and land a decent JUCO transfer. We're not likely to get legit D-I talent from the high school ranks.

A PG should have been recruited last year; Cy failed us; at least when Eaves left he left a skilled team.

Austin Williams is a true pt g That is exactly why he was brought to A&T, to play the point. He has had very little playing time in the two years he has been on the team. The best game I have seen him play was against nccu. He played well. He needs work and to be coached up. There is a need for another point guard or two. Hopefully ones that are 6-3 up with skill.

My understanding is that Travis Fields has verbally committed to Radford University.

I like this kid he had all the things I look for in a PG.....Great Vision, He can Handle the Rock, He can go Left or Right, and he can Finish at the Basket on Fast Breaks. Its just gravy that he he can shoot the three and has a nice jump shot.

Parris also has good anticipation on defense... and he's quicker than either Sam or Ahmad, so his size isn't as much of an issue. Parris looks like he really understands the game. And he's from Charlotte, so it would be another in-state win. We're fighting with Fordham on this one. It would be huge to win over an A-10 school.

He has good PG instincts but his game is still very raw and not as college-ready as I would like in a PG. He still has a lot of playground in his game.

Is there is a website that talks about North Carolina high school basketball stats?? If there is, I would look to see which players in the state averaged over 4-5 assists per game. If they are a senior.....look at them, talk to their coach, etc. If there's a good vibe from the vetting process - give the dude a scholarship.
I'm not looking for a flashy PG who can cross people over. I'm not looking for a PG who can shoot from 25 feet and put up 30ppg. I'm looking for a FLOOR GENERAL. If you're dishing out that many assists in high school, then you show the signs that you understand offensive sets and how to execute them into getting assists for your teammate. I need a heady point guard running the show. Heady point guards don't pop off the screen or are on videos highlighting their exploits. They just do their job....

As Decks stated before... they are very few PGs that are ready as freshmen to play at D1 level out the gate. And those guys are going high major level. The question is whether the player has the core natural skills that you can't teach, but can build on. I see those PG skills in Parris. Ideally, you'd want a junior-to-be like Austin Williams to be able to take that PG role and let a player like Parris develop. But there's nothing for putting pressure on upperclassmen to perform than good recruiting behind them. Fordham is an Atlantic 10 school in New York City. I think that's a very big deal for recruiting purposes if we can recruit a player against a high-major.

Chapman at NCCU was probably the best PG I have seen in the MEAC in a while. Most MEAC teams are running a 3 guard offence with no true point

Fuentes was solid, but he wasn't a big enough threat to score in order to keep the best defenses honest. It's the same issue with Soloman at SCSU and Robinson at Norfolk. Look no further than the top of the conference with Hampton and Reggie Johnson. He's the classic 2 guard stuck in a 1's body. But he had to play the point this year with Powers deciding to take his talents elsewhere. Johnson's penetration ability and experience made it work. If you can get a true 1, I believe that you should. But at mid-major level, there are pros and cons with that.
