They have closed down the street ("the strip")in front of the union to prepare for demolition. Do any of you know when the demolition will actually start, because I want to be there to at least get me 1 brick from the old union. I have a lot of memories from that place as do a lot of you all. Do you all think it would be a good idea for the school to preserve a lot of these bricks and sell them at homecoming or at anytime. Maybe charge $1 or $2 at the most. It may be worth it or not. Everybody won't be able to be there when they start to demolish the building to get a brick. I am sure a lot of Aggie would love to have a brick. Just a thought!! Maybe they can use those bricks to build that new bell tower...Oops! That's actually a great idea. I'm sure there are more than enough bricks. Will it happen? Can BDV organize an Alumni Union Bell Tower!?

Are there plans to tear down Barbee Hall ("High-Rise") It was built about a year or two after they built the union, I think around 1969 or 70.

I like to get a brick from the Union too. I have a brick from Scott Hall on my bookshelf so this would be a nice addition. And we don't need to tear down any more buildings. In fact, I think those building if renovated would do just fine.

Is there a more up-to-date "Projects" list?? Not to my knowledge...I'd be interested to see a timeline for the project, but I'm assuming that since they are still soliciting a designer for the thing, then we wont see that for a while. OAN: I think it would be really nice, and maybe a great tool to drive alumni giving, by having a construction camera for the New Union. I see this with a'lot of other university's mainly with stadium and arena construction, but it could work here. On the ncat website, a link to the live cam overlooking the construction site, and maybe beside it, a link for people to donate to the university. Not only does it give those interested an opportunity to see the progression of the project first hand but, it might compel those same people to make a donation to the university Here are a few examples of these cams in action: Baylor Bears McLane Stadium CamFlorida Citrus Bowl Renovation

The Student Union opened my sophomore year in 1966. As all, I have great memories that took place in and outside of the Union. My most favorable memories are:
1. The competitive ping pong games 2. The various card games 3. Billiards 4. Canteen (Bologna Sandwiches, Whopper Burgers & Fries) 5. Barber Shop (Great Barbers)& Beauty Salon 6. Favorite Meeting Spot 7. Music Room 8. Clyde & Rock 9. Mr. Al Smith 10.Bowling (only 2 lanes) but fun!
The students nicknamed the Union ... "The Black Studies Onion" around 1969 because of our Blackness and all of the racial turmoil and riots during our days at A&T.
One lasting memory: Full scale riot going on in the city of Greensboro and on A&T's campus - students break into the "The Black Studies Onion" and entered the canteen and began to cook bologna sandwiches and dance to the music from the juke box. This lasted until the cops and national guard ran us out.
I just wished they could have found a way to keep from tearing the Union down. However, I am fully appreciative of the one that is proposed.

To be honest with my Aggie family, the Union has been inadequate for a campus our size for years. Whenever I am on campus I make three stops...the Union, the book store and the Band Warehouse ( until we get a proper band facility, it's a warehouse). Rarely do I find any students hanging out there and it looks rather bare and weatherbeaten. And the "Hall of Fame" wall is very sad. I hate to see any part of my A&T experience torn down but I agree it's time for the old Union to go.
Now if I could convince the administration to build a band complex for our "world class " band, I will be happy. I realize in these tight economic times this would be more of a luxary than a true necessity, we do need a nicer facility, I don't know if it would be feasible to buy the current building they are now in and invest in upgrading the acustics but something needs to be done. I worry about the long term impact on the band kids hearing.

It was a huge part of his life. Thanks for the smile.
