I also feel you on that. But Raper my not feel comfortable being in the backfield (because of the shoulder injury). Now as a slot receiver I can see that because it would open up more options to use his running talents.

Speaking from experience(broken collar bone), a bad shoulder injury takes years to get over sometimes.

i see what both of you are saying and no i haven't seen him in practice, so i can't make a judgment based on that. but my previous experiences coaching another sport taught me that as a coach, you must learn the mental side of each athlete. when to push buttons and when not to push buttons.
i wouldn't even be having this discussion if it weren't for last week. i've mentioned his last week's performance about a million times because its important. i could be wrong, but i think i understand where raper's at "mentally" this week.
i've seen this scenario numerous times in my own experiences in sports. i've seen coaches literally "lie" to players just to boost their confidence. i swear i watched a football coach look at his timer and tell a player he just ran a 4.5 forty when he actually ran a 4.7 forty. but he did that just to boost his confidence.
confidence goes up and down based on each individual athlete. when a guy who has previously under performed suddenly has a big boost in confidence, as a coach you've got to seize that moment! you may not have that chance again.
so my personal opinion is to give him just a few touches in the backfield so that he'll have early opportunities to exploit that confidence. but even if they don't put him in the backfield, they can't let him go almost a full game with only 2 or 3 touches. they've got to go to him early and often, whether it be from the wr position, rb position, or both. its just my personal instincts that say, give raper the ball, early and often this week. after about 4 or 5 early touches, we'll then know if he's the same larry raper or last week's larry raper. and for me, that's the bottom line...

They may have put in some plays for Raper to get some touches . That we will not know until tomorrow. It can't hurt!! I'm just hoping for the upset win!!! If they have him selling popcorn between plays and we win I'm cool with it.

For anyone who thinks Raper can't play running back let me remind you of the South Carolina State game last season . I think he had 14 carries for 86 yards and he was only one tackle away from breaking a very long run.

I just think there is pecking order for getting people the ball. Raper is 3rd at best on that pecking order. Probably 4th.
Should I as a coach be worried about getting my 4th option more touches in the backfield? Probably not. If I'm worried about getting my 4th option more touches then that means my first 3 are not working, LOL.
Thats all I'm saying. I would rather get Miles more touches on screens or Mayhew some more creative plays or Lewis involved or Warren back into the mix. All that comes before moving Raper in front of Drake as a RB in my opinion.

As for me I'm not saying that he can't play running back . My point is, Is he as comfortable playing running back as he is playing receiver . That is the question ?? Hail I have a kid that came to us as a receiver he was OK but he was not comfortable playing that position . I ask him why he was playing receiver in High school and not running back he stated that this is were they put me ! We moved him into the Backfield/ slot and he is like a duck in water, HANDS LIKE GLUE and can run between the tackles. He never played in the backfield before. Is Raper comfortable in tight spaces if so, fine put him back their. Also coming off a shoulder injury can play on you mentally ! Also be aware that if we use Raper as a RB we lose one of the top receivers that we have and don't think that a good DB will not notice the change. Like I said before their are ways to use his talent, sprint sweeps, revises and screens that will allow him to get out in space.

i haven't been impressed by any of the backups including coles. well, let's leave it up to the coaches and hope they have a good game plan for bcu.
we're just arm chair coaches. but it was a good dialogue nonetheless...

As Broadway indicted if Raper continues to work hard then I'm sure he'll be good wherever he's placed.

I like what the staff is doing with each individual. Best believe that Burgess and Drake will become a factor as the season goes on. Just call me "The Swam" ;D
