Ties to This Week vs. 2009 North Carolina A&T Game
The last time Coastal Carolina played North Carolina A&T, Sept. 26, 2009, there were several similarities to this year's meeting.
• That meeting was the fourth game of the year for the Chants, as is this year.
• Coastal enters this game with the Aggies, just as it did in 2009, coming off a road loss the previous week.
• Coastal had a bye week after beating the Aggies in 2009 and will again in 2011.
• After the bye week in 2009, Coastal hosted VMI, just as it will in 2011.
The biggest difference between 2009 and 2011, the NC A&T game was played in Conway.
Coastal Looking for 3-1 Start
With a win at North Carolina A&T, Coastal Carolina would improve to 3-1 on the season. If so, it would mark the first 3-1 start by the Chants since the 2005 season, when Coastal finished 9-2. Coastal's only other 3-1 start came in 2004, a year CCU finished 10-1.
Goose Eggs in Fourth Quarter
Coastal Carolina has yet to give up a point in the fourth quarter this season.
The Chants used that to their advantage, scoring a late fourth-quarter touchdown to break 23-23 deadlock and defeat Furman in the season opener.
While Coastal's offense struggled in week two versus Catawba. Coastal's defense held the Indians to a first-quarter field goal and pitched a shutout the rest of the way.
At Georgia, Coastal kept the streak alive as its reserves kept the Georgia reserves off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
Other News and Notes on the Horizon
Coastal Carolina will have a host of activities when it returns home Oct. 8 to host VMI.
• That game will be "Hero's Day" where the Chants will honor those who serve our country/states/counties and cities in various roles.
• As part of that, Coastal will specifically honor Howard White, who is in the CCU Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame and has his 23 basketball number retired as well as being a Master Sergeant in the Army.
• Coastal will also take the opportunity that to continue the campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness. Prior to the game, all breast cancer survivors will be welcome on Benton Field for a ceremony.
Sacks Streak Ends, Another Starts
Coastal Carolina ranked first in the Big South and third in the NCAA, allowing just seven sacks in 12 games last season. Also, Coastal did not allow more than one sack in any one game last season.
That streak came to an end when Aramis Hillary was sacked twice over a three-play span early in the fourth quarter in the season-opening win over Furman.
However, despite Hillary and Jamie Childers racking up a total of 26 negative rushing yards in the Catawba win, none of the losses came as result of a sack. Also, despite struggling offensively, Coastal Carolina did not allow a sack at Georgia.
Coastal's two sacks allowed (0.67 avg.) this season leads the Big South and ranks 15th in the nation for fewest sacks allowed.
Prior to last year's seven-sack performance, Coastal had allowed 25 sacks in both 2008 and `09.
O-Line Experience
Coastal Carolina returns four starters -- five if you count tight end David Duran -- and two experienced backups from last year's successful offensive line. The Chants return All-Big South tackle Jamey Cheatwood, Tim Franklin, Bryan Brooks and Pat Williams, while Caleb Dees and Will Middleton -- each of whom had one start in 2010 and saw extended action as backups.
The current starting five have 76 starts between them and seen action in a combined 116 games.
Cheatwood, a sophomore, has played in all 15 games over the 2010-11 seasons, starting 14 at left tackle.
Franklin, who has started every position along the front five except right tackle, has played in 37 of CCU's 38 games since 2008, missing one of the 12 games in `08 as a redshirt freshman, and has started each of the last 26 games (11 at left tackle, 10 at right guard, three at left guard and two at center).
Williams played in all 12 games in 2010, starting 10, and has started all three games at center in 2011. He also played in six games as a redshirt freshman in 2009.
Dees has started all three games at right guard this season after playing in eight games, with two starts at right guard, in 2010 as a redshirt freshman.
Brooks has played in each of Coastal Carolina's 38 games since 2008. He has started at right tackle each of the last 29 games, dating back to the final three games of 2008, his redshirt freshman season.
Also rotating in at both tackle spots is sophomore Will Middleton, who started once in 2010 and has played in seven career games, while redshirt freshman Chad Hamilton is backing up both guard spots this season, playing in all three 2011 contests.
